Falcons defense ready to make a statement
However, if the Falcons have any hope of making the playoffs for first time in eight years, they will need better production from their defense.
Specifically, the defensive line. Last year, Atlanta produced 31 sacks, which was second fewest in the league. Only New England's 28 ranked worse.
The front office did make some moves after the year. They released defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, which was surprising since he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year for the Falcons.
Atlanta put a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of the ball during the draft.
Four of their five draft picks were defensive players, which includes their two first round picks linebacker Jalon Walker from Georgia and defensive end James Pearce from Tennessee.
Atlanta also needs to improve its defensive third-down conversation rate. They gave up over 45% last year, which was second worst in the league.
The Falcons continue the final day of mandatory minicamp tomorrow, but the final practice is not open to the media.

Ronald Acuña Jr. placed on IL with Achilles inflammation, could reportedly be back within 2-3 weeks
Atlanta Braves All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. was placed on the injured list Wednesday with Achilles inflammation in his right leg, a day after leaving a game early against the Kansas City Royals. The Braves announced his diagnosis shortly after his exit on Tuesday. After the game, manager Brian Snitker confirmed to reporters that Acuña would be placed on the 10-day injured list. He was seen in a walking boot after the game. Per Mark Bowman, an MRI revealed a Grade 1 calf strain for the outfielder, a diagnosis mild enough that he could be back within 2-3 weeks. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Acuña left the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Kansas City's Vinnie Pasquantino hit a fly ball to deep right-center field that Acuña couldn't reach. It bounced off the warning track and over the fence for a ground-rule RBI double that extended Kansas City's lead to 9-3. Acuña jogged from his spot in the outfield, then left to the Braves clubhouse with a trainer. The Royals held on for a 9-6 victory. Per multiple reports from the game, Acuña showed signs of discomfort prior to the play that preceded his exit. After the game, he said through an interpreter that he sustained the injury while running from first to home on a play the previous night, while wiping tears from his eyes multiple times: "I think it definitely got worse today. I told them yesterday and everyone said, 'Hey, take the day if you want it. You can take the day off,' but I've just missed so much time through injuries I don't want to miss any more time. "I was out there hoping they wouldn't hit it my way and of course when you do that, they always hit it your way." The injury is the latest in a stellar career that has been plagued by leg injuries. Acuña has sustained ACL tears in each of his knees — the right in 2021 and the left in 2024. In between, he won the 2023 MVP Award while leading the National League in hits, runs scored, stolen bases and on-base percentage. Injuries have limited Acuña to 82 games or fewer in three of his seven MLB seasons. He missed the first 49 games of this season while recovering from the ACL tear sustained last year. Despite the injuries, Acuña has been named an All-Star in five of his seven MLB seasons as one of the most versatile and gifted offensive players in baseball. He was also named Rookie of the Year in one of the two years he wasn't an All-Star. Acuña and the Braves are certainly hoping this latest setback won't require an extended stay on the injured list. With the 45-61 Braves 12.5 games out of the wild-card race as of the conclusion of Tuesday's game, there should be little motivation for the team to rush him back.

A WNBA game was just interrupted by a flying sex toy and the game has never been more gay
A bright green sex toy just made a headline-grabbing appearance at a WNBA game, and the internet can't stop talking about it. As the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream battled it out on the court during a deadlocked 75-75 point game, the final minute before the clock wound down was interrupted by a fan throwing a lime green dildo onto the court. The WNBA has never been more gay than in this moment, and that's really saying something considering how sapphic this sport is. Right as the clock struck 1:00 in the fourth quarter of this contentious game on July 29, the spicy toy was lobbed onto the court, and the referee blew the whistle to stop the game while they tried to figure out what the object was. In a video clip of the incident that has since gone viral, a police officer is seen collecting the dildo so that play could resume. The whole thing was caught on tape because an ingenious camera person managed to zoom in on the sex toy that managed to stop a professional basketball game. This is the kind of journalism we want to see more of! People on the court and in the audience were clearly perplexed by what had happened, but no one was more surprised than the commentator who said, 'Nobody's picked the object up yet, and – oh my gosh' when she finally saw what it was. The lime green dildo turned out to be a good omen for the Valkyries, who ended up winning 77-75. Normally, we'd say the New York Liberty have everyone beat on sapphic entertainment during a game because of Ellie the Elephant's sexy dance moves, but Atlanta may now be crowned the most lesbian arena in the league! Of course, this event broke the internet, and people all over social media have been flooding the timelines of women's sports fans with hilarious memes ever since. "The TL created a masterpiece with this one" "That's just a mouth guard right?" "#WelcomeToTheW" "Just another day in the WNBA" "They threw what on the court?" "Damn how my shit get there" "ME When the camera man panned the floor in Atlanta:" "jordin's reaction is frying meee" "What was on the court" "In case yall were too busy giggling over the ATL incident, this just happened in LA" "I know somebody didn't just throw a big ass dildo on the Atlanta Dream court just now." "the Atlanta security" "This game… sure is a stiff one. Nate Landman looks like the breakout star of Rams training camp
Landman has had a huge impact already and is in line to play a major role in Year 1 with the Rams. Inside linebacker has been a low-priority position for the Los Angeles Rams in recent years. They did spend a third-round pick on Ernest Jones in 2021 and sign Bobby Wagner in 2022, but they haven't addressed the position as aggressively as they have other spots. The front office took another modest approach this offseason by signing Nate Landman to a $1.1 million deal for one season before drafting Chris Paul Jr. in the fifth round. Those weren't headline-making moves, but Landman is ensuring everyone knows his name at training camp. Through the first seven practices, he's become the breakout star of camp. He's left no question about who will be the team's starting linebacker, running away with that competition as the defensive signal caller and a primary playmaker in the middle of the field. Sean McVay was asked Tuesday about the impact Landman has had so far, and his response was telling. 'You can hear it, you can feel it,' he said. 'He's one of those guys, he has some natural leadership traits and characteristics. I think you're innately thrust into that when you play an inside linebacker position. He's just got a good feel. He's got great awareness, a good understanding of how to be able to positively uplift his teammates and challenge them in the right way. I love what this guy is about.' During practice on Saturday, Landman made the play of the day when he punched the ball out of Davis Allen's arms for a takeaway. It was a perfectly timed play by the veteran linebacker, who had a knack for creating such turnovers during his time with the Falcons; he forced three fumbles in each of the last two years. On Tuesday, Landman made another play that stood out to McVay. He and Omar Speights cleaned up a run on fourth-and-1, stopping the ball carrier short of the sticks after Kamren Kinchens forced the ball outside with good penetration. 'You saw there was a great play kind of in a short yardage situation that 'Kam' Kinchens did a great job of being able to kind of spill the ball outside and Omar and Landman in unison ended up getting a knock-back tackle on a fourth-and-1,' he said. 'He has consistently shown that type of stuff.' Quentin Lake was the leader of the defense last season, wearing the green dot as a do-it-all safety. Landman has taken over that responsibility this summer, which Lake says 'takes a load off' him – in a good way. Lake attended the East-West Shrine Game out of college like Landman so he's been aware of his game for a while, but seeing it up close has been a treat. His communication and leadership have really helped the defense, as has his knack for creating turnovers. 'Fantastic player. I almost want to call him 'Peanut Punch Landman'. He has just a knack for the ball and we see so many clips, Coach McVay shows them in the team meeting room of him doing it in Atlanta and then you see it out here and you understand why he's able to cause those turnovers,' Lake said Tuesday. 'He practices the right way, a great communicator, fantastic teammate. Great addition for us and I can't wait to see what he's going to do during the season as well.' Landman's responsibility as the signal caller shows how much the coaching staff trusts him, Lake says. And he's proving them right for putting so much on his plate, doing an excellent job getting everyone aligned on each play. 'He's done an amazing job,' Lake continued. 'I know there was familiarity with him being in Atlanta, kind of with the same defensive scheme, but his transition really has been flawless. You guys have seen it, he's been making a ton of plays.' One of the things that makes Landman a productive player is his ability to stop the run. In 2023, he had the second-highest run-stop rate of any linebacker in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Last season, he took a slight step back but playing behind a stout defensive line like the Rams' will free him up to make more plays. Linebacker was one of the biggest question marks on the Rams' roster entering camp but they have their answer in Landman.
