A millennial who retired early says she 'got bored' 6 months in and shares her top takeaway from hitting FIRE

Early retirement was everything Rose Han wanted — until it wasn't.
"I thought FIRE was the goal for a really long time," she told Business Insider, referring to the financial independence, retire early movement. "And, at 32, I basically achieved a version of FIRE — living in my camper van and having freedom — and it was fun for like the first six months."
But less than a year into early retirement, "I found that I got bored and didn't feel all that fulfilled."
Han's financial independence journey began with a lot of debt: about $100,000 worth of student loans and credit cards. It forced her to increase her income, rein in her spending, and save aggressively, habits that she maintained after becoming debt-free and helped her achieve a seven-figure net worth.
Only after quitting her Wall Street job did she realize she was chasing the wrong thing all along.
"The question shouldn't be: How can I retire early and finally live my life? The question should be: How can I build a life I don't want to retire from?" she said.
At least for her, she'd rather spend her time working on something that lights her up than sit around doing nothing. "It might sound a little idealistic, but I really think that it's possible. It just takes maybe a different way of thinking and some effort."
Building a life you don't want to retire from
The way Han sees it, there are two main paths to building a life that you don't want to retire from.
"The ideal would be: What you love to do is what also makes you money, so you never have to retire, and it never feels like work," she said. "That's one possibility, and that's a sweet spot that I have more or less found, where the work that I do is what I love."
Han runs a financial literacy business that began as a passion project. She hosted free personal finance meet-ups and started a YouTube channel to share her own experience with money, which evolved into a profitable business with multiple revenue streams: online courses, brand deals, affiliate links, book sales, and AdSense for YouTube.
"It doesn't feel like work, and it makes you money. That's the whole package," said Han.
The second main path — establishing a reliable income stream that will pay the bills while pursuing your passion on the side — may be more practical.
"Elizabeth Gilbert talked about this in her book 'Big Magic.' She decided waitressing would be the thing that pays the bills so that writing would not need to have that pressure, and she could maintain her passion for writing," said Han. With this path, "you have a cash cow and you also have your passions. They don't have to be the same thing. It's like being the lawyer who has a rock band on the weekends."
If, over time, your rock band starts making enough money to sustain your lifestyle, that's when you could decide whether to quit your corporate job and pursue music full-time.
"I don't think you should just starve and pursue your passion. You also need to think about your cash cow," she added. "If you can make both one and the same, great. But if not, there are other ways to do it."
Changing her mindset from accumulating money to accumulating experiences
For years, Han poured much of her energy into making money and investing aggressively, but her single-minded pursuit of FIRE came at the cost of connection and deeper life experiences.
"The overall emphasis on money and the accumulation of money has just gotten out of hand, because capitalism has gotten out of hand," she said. "It's taken us away from what really, really matters, which is time with our loved ones and relationships."
Once she hit a $1 million net worth, one of her first thoughts was, "OK, well, now why don't I get to $10 million?" she said, a mindset she has since started to question. How much is enough, and at what point do you stop chasing more to enjoy what you already have?
"I feel like that's one outdated piece of advice: Overemphasis on accumulating money and dollars versus accumulating moments and core memories that you can never replace," she said.
She's not the only one waking up to this idea. She pointed to the "great resignation" of 2021 and 2022: "People were quitting their jobs because they were realizing, 'Oh, being away from home and working for somebody else who doesn't even really value me is not worth it anymore. I'd rather just have less money, but actually be able to do what I want with my time.'"
For Han, her happiest moments have come since moving to the same city as her boyfriend.
"The moments where we're just camping in our camper van, making a little fire, and my dog's running around the campsite, and it's just the three of us," she said. "Super simple moments that cost very little. That's what I live for."

T-Mobile, Apple, more tech giants may face billions in civil fines

TikTok is one of the five biggest social media platforms, only behind Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Launched in its present form in 2018, as of February 2024, it had been downloaded around 4.7 billion times. After YouTube's success, who would've thought that another video streaming platform had any chance at similar success? I guess only entrepreneurs who think outside the box. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter TikTok managed to build its own path by offering features other social media platforms lacked. For example, TikTok's for your page (FYP) feature allows users to access a never-ending stream of the most popular short clips, even on new accounts that don't follow anyone, giving it an advantage against competitors. Related: TikTok's next move has Google and Meta sweating bullets You know how Twitter or Facebook accounts with no friends feel lonely? That is not happening on TikTok. Its algorithm is praised for its uniqueness, which entices users to spend hours on the app. FYP is not the only feature that sets TikTok apart from other social media platforms. Its special appeal is also built on short-form video content, a user-friendly interface and an emphasis on making engagement with videos feel more personal and impactful. However, with popularity comes the question of responsibility. Over the last couple of years, TikTok has been under scrutiny over national security concerns. In 2020, the first Trump Administration tried but failed to use its emergency power to block TikTok in the country. The government was and is still worried, because the Chinese company ByteDance owns TikTok, leaving user data vulnerable. The main concern is that the Chinese government might access that user data or manipulate the platform for its own purposes. Three years later, the Biden Administration banned TikTok on devices used by federal employees, and in 2024, both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or be banned in U.S. app stores and websites. The bill was signed into law by then-President Biden. Related: Facebook makes bold effort to take down TikTok The same year, TikTok filed suit, calling the law unconstitutional, but a federal appeals court unanimously upheld the TikTok ban regulation, writes TechTarget. On January 19, 2025, TikTok stopped working for 170 million Americans after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against TikTok's bid to avoid a ban. The app was also removed from app stores. Then on January 20, the app returned after President Trump signed an executive order delaying enforcement of the ban for an extra 75 days, or until April 4. Trump extended the deadline two more times, with the latest extension announced in June and set for September 17, 2025. The initial law signed by President Biden noted that any company continuing to support TikTok's operation in the U.S. faced up to $850 billion in liability, writes PhoneArena. The day after the first expansion of President Trump's executive order, the administration sent letters to tech companies including Apple, informing them that they will not face penalties if keeping TikTok online. Related: Amazon shuts down another key business location Considering that the executive order did not make TikTok legal again, Tony Tan, an Alphabet (GOOGL) stockholder, is raising serious concerns. Tan asks: What if a future court ruled that President Trump didn't have the power to use an executive order to reverse a law passed by the Senate, the House, and signed by the sitting president? Earlier this year, Senator Edward Markey, Senator Cory Booker, and Senator Chris Van Hollen raised the same concern in a letter written to the president. Senators wrote that such non-enforcement of the TikTok Ban "was not only unlawful but also raised serious questions about TikTok's future, as the law imposes liability - up to $850 billion - on companies for facilitating TikTok's continued operations in the United States." More Tech Stocks: Amazon tries to make AI great again (or maybe for the first time)Veteran portfolio manager raises eyebrows with latest Meta Platforms moveGoogle plans major AI shift after Meta's surprising $14 billion move Tan sued Alphabet to find out why it returned TikTok to the Play Store considering the risk of $850 billion in liabilities, arguing that Alphabet's decision could affect its shareholders. The lawsuit argues Google shouldn't rely on President Trump's executive order and Attorney Generals' letter alone to protect them from legal risks, and that the tech giant could be liable by a future president, or even Trump, who could change his mind, writes Wired. "There is a federal law that says the TikTok app should not be on your store, and I can see TikTok is on the app store," Tan says of Google, according to the outlet. "Congress passed the law, and the Supreme Court upheld it. It's not debatable." Other tech firms that might face similar risks include Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Oracle. Why it's a smart time to buy an EV

Now might be a good time to pull the trigger if you're thinking about buying an electric vehicle. President Donald Trump signed the "Big Beautiful Bill" into effect on Friday. That means the $7,500 tax credit established under former President Joe Biden's EV initiative will expire on September 30. "If you're in the market for an EV and you're ready to commit to a new car, you should do that," Joseph Yoon, consumer insights analyst at car shopping website Edmunds, told Business Insider. Revised rules for the $7,500 federal tax credit went into effect last year and limited the number of EVs that qualified for the credit. However, 20 electric and hybrid vehicles, including all of Tesla's models and the Ford F150 Lightning, still qualify for the discount (you can check out the full list here.) Some auto manufacturers, like Slate Auto, have already started to adjust their listings. The Jeff Bezos-backed EV startup recently removed the "under $20,000" expected price tag for its upcoming EV pickup truck, which the company previously expected to qualify for federal tax incentives. Now it says it's expected to cost in the "mid-twenties." The federal EV tax credit has two parts. Consumers can qualify for a $3,750 credit if the vehicle meets either the critical minerals or battery component requirements. If it satisfies both criteria, consumers can get the full $7,500 credit. To qualify for the $7,500 incentive, several additional criteria must be met: the vehicle must have a battery capacity of at least 7 kilowatt-hours, a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,000 pounds, and final assembly must take place in North America. Additionally, at least 50% of the battery's minerals and components must be sourced from the US or a country with a US free-trade agreement. There's also a suggested price cap for the incentive to apply. Used EVS also have a clean vehicle tax credit, which allows certain buyers in an income bracket to be eligible for up to $4,000 for an EV with a sale price of $25,000 or less. Brian Moody, lead senior editor for Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book, said that buyers in search of a used EV should also strive to make a purchase as soon as possible. Long-term, though, it won't make too much of a difference because used EVs "depreciate very rapidly," Moody said. The average 1 to 5-year-old used EV price is around $31,110, according to data from "Even without the incentive, they're still going to end up being a great deal," Moody said about used EVs. New EVs are another story — often commanding higher price tags than their gas-powered rivals. Yoon said the average sticker price of a new EV is $63,026, and the average manufacturer's suggested retail price for a gas car is $50,273. While not having the $7,500 rebate will have an impact, some manufacturers may add their own discounts and incentives to help move inventory, Yoon said. If you happen to be on the fence about getting an EV and you're not in the place for a big-ticket purchase, there may be some benefit to waiting. With the incentives increasing competition in the market, some auto manufacturers may up their game to convince buyers to convert, Moody said. "This could end up making electric cars better overall because they'll have to now compete on an even playing field with cars that are powered by all different types of fuels, whether it's hydrogen, electric, or just gas," Moody said. The shift wouldn't happen overnight or in the near-term future, given that manufacturers will have to work on outsourcing, tariffs, and price adjustments. However, it could be a long-term benefit. But if you were already planning on buying a new EV in the coming months and can afford it — you might as well take advantage of the federal incentive while you still can.

You're worth it." —CharlottePrice: $99.95 (originally $199.95; available in three colors) — and shop all the Philips Sonicare deals here. This isn't some ol' breezy fan, folks. If you're sweating just thinking about being outside this summer, add this arctic accessory to your wardrobe and drop the temp around you by up to 36°F. I can't say you'll make friends sporting this individual AC, but you better believe everyone'll wish they were you. Cool. This can be manually or app-controlled. The battery life can last all day on a full charge and claims to "lower your body temperature by 36°F in just one second, even in 105°F weather" which sounds too good to be true, but reviewers are raving about it. Tank's review below has been cut short, and it's still long, and totally worth the review: "As a 40-year-old motorcycle enthusiast who regularly tackles cross-state routes, I've tried every cooling hack. All failed. I first heard about this neck air conditioner and figured it was worth a shot. I'm honestly impressed. The cooling power is no joke. The device pushes out steady cold wind around my neck and shoulders, which makes a huge difference when riding in the heat with a helmet on. The airflow is direct and effective, and I can actually feel my upper body staying cool instead of baking under my quiet enough that I barely notice it, even with my helmet on. You can still hear the wind passing by, but it's more like a soft hum that fades into the background. It fits well around my neck without feeling bulky or heavy. The weight is light enough that I forget it's even there after a while. I've worn it during long rides and even while doing some yard work at home, and it stays comfortable battery life is another highlight. I can easily get through a full day of riding on a single charge, and I've yet to run out of juice mid-trip. For me, that's crucial since I don't always have a chance to recharge when I'm on the go. I think the value for money is spot on. It's not some cheap plastic fan — this thing feels well-made and does exactly what it promises. I can see myself using this not just on the bike but also at summer events, BBQs, and even camping isn't just another gadget—it's your ticket to riding longer, harder, and happier in brutal heat. Just be ready for jealous stares at rest stops when you're the only one not drowning in sweat. If you're on the fence like I was, especially if you're a rider dealing with hot and humid conditions, I'd say go for it. It's a game-changer." —TankPrice: $219.10+ (originally $279; available in two colors) A Dyson V8 Plus cordless vacuum for $50 off that's lightweight, powerful, and capable of capturing ~99.99% of particles~. Plus it comes with a hair attachment to pick up pet fur and shed human hair too! Promising review: "Best vacuum for pet hair. After going through many different makes of vacuum cleaners, I have finally found one that works for the fur of our long-haired dog. I had heard how great the Dyson series of vacuums was, but I was always put off by the cost. Finally, after being frustrated by other brands that were effective for a period but then became more useful as doorstops than as a cleaner, I made the decision to "bite the bullet" and spend the extra money on the brand-name vacuum. The first time I used my Dyson, it picked up handfuls of fur from areas that I thought were clean. The carpets look cleaner, and the hardwood floors are pristine. Suction is strong even on the lower setting to make floors look like new. Emptying the canister is as easy as could be. Battery life is sufficient to clean my small home. I love that by placing the Dyson in the wall hanger it attaches directly to the charger. No searching for charging cords, or charging/change detachable batteries. My Dyson is always ready and charged whenever I need it. It is neatly tucked away, taking up little room. Being an older person, I appreciate the fact that the Dyson is lightweight and easily maneuvered. It is light enough that when the head is removed and used separately, it makes cleaning our carpeted stairs easier than ever. In summary, I love my Dyson, and would recommend that the extra cost is well worth it. You will save yourself the frustration of purchasing multiple machines that are not effective. and which will end up costing more in the long run. My only regret is that by thinking of the cost, I was actually denying myself the "pleasure" of a cleaner home. I don't worry about how much our beautiful dog sheds, and can enjoy her playful personality." —Rosey PoseyPrice: $299.99 (typically $349.99) A Queen-size cooling sheet set for up to 24% off you will be *soooo* happy you invested in the next time you have company coming over and need lots of spares to swap out without getting swamped by laundry. It's also modular, so you can add it to your tool case, which is very functional in my case." —David Price: $99 (originally $199.99) The TikTok-famous Mixsoon Bean Essence for 34% off — a seriously sexy discount for this K-beauty exfoliating rinse-off treatment that won't leave you feeling dry and irritated afterward. The secret is the combination of fermented pomegranate (which acts as a natural chemical exfoliant to help get rid of flaky, dead skin) and fermented barley (which helps to hydrate and brighten). You can't beat this price for such wow-worthy results! Promising reviews: "I saw this all over TikTok/Instagram and decided to buy it because I have a lot of sebaceous filaments on my chin and nose. It's a little expensive but I took a gamble: it works! You can physically see the sebaceous filaments come out of your pores; it is not the product bunching up. My problem areas were so much smoother after using and were left with a moisturized glow. I then proceeded to have my boyfriend use this product to see if it worked this well on everyone on the first try, and it worked on his nose as well. Amazing stuff. 🩷" —Losa"I have hyperpigmentation and oily skin. It also comes with a lanyard, so you can wear it around your neck. Fits all smartphones up to 7" diagonal review: "This product is incredible. I purchased it to use while in Key West for an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 plus, and Galaxy S6 Edge, and it fits perfectly for each phone (but a little more snug with the iPhone 6 plus). It is completely waterproof and takes great photos and video through the case, but you have to press record prior to submerging the case underwater. My family went snorkeling and kept the case with the phone inside submerged almost the entire time and had no issues with leakage. My family and I got stopped numerous times by being asked where we purchased this product. Perfect, even if you are just on the beach and you do not want to get sand or sunscreen on your phone, and still want to take photos/text/browse the internet while on the beach. I will be purchasing this for everyone in my family as it has become a travel must-have! I highly recommend this product." —Amber SmithPrice: $6.99+ (typically $9.41+; available in 14 colors). It delivers a powerful yet gentle stream of water that thoroughly cleans between my teeth and along the gum line. The effectiveness is undeniable — I can actually feel how much fresher and cleaner my mouth is after each use because my breath has noticeably improved. Beyond just the results, the ease of use has completely transformed my approach to flossing. No more struggling with traditional floss or worrying about missing tricky spots. This allows you to simply raise or lower your computer to eye level with the press of a button. Promising review: "This desk is wonderful! I got it to switch from a stationary to a sit/stand desk. I liked that the desktop was one solid piece (vs some that are 2 pieces), and I liked the combination of desktop and desk leg colors. My dad and I worked to put this together, and it took us about an hour. All the of the screws and things needed came in nicely labeled bags and it was really easy to figure out what we needed to use. You do need to supply your own screwdriver or drill. Once put together, it was easy to set the default heights for sitting and standing. The desk is actually pretty quiet when it moves! It is not super fast to raise/lower, but it moves along at a nice pace, and everything feels sturdy when it's moving. I have been using this for about a week now and I love it!" —Amazon CustomerPrice: $109.99+ (originally $169.99+; available in five sizes) A Shark FlexBreeze Pro Mist Fan for 20% off (the first time it's ever been on sale!) — this indoor/outdoor fan is sure to be beloved by folks who are tired of ~sweating it~ during the summer. The set includes glasses that should be worn while operating the review: "So far, the hair growth has either slowed down to an incredible amount or completely stopped as of today. I went on a two-week trip mid-March where I couldn't use the device (overseas), and I barely had to shave any of these areas. For reference, before using this, I had to shave every day and would feel the hair growing back/stubble by evening on the same day, as my hair grows super fast.
