'Show Some Sensitivity': Congress Attacks Kangana Over 'No Cabinet' Remark In Flood-Hit Mandi

News18a day ago
The Congress party slammed BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and said her comments on the flood situation in Himachal Pradesh were "insensitive".
The Congress party on Sunday slammed BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, after she paid a visit to her rain-ravaged constituency and said that she does not have any official Cabinet to provide disaster relief.
Terming the remarks by the actor-politician 'insensitive", the Congress opined that Kangana should show sensitivity to the situation in Himachal Pradesh and those affected by floods and landslides.
In an X post, the Congress shared a byte by Kangana and wrote, 'In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst has caused massive destruction. People are distressed, their everything has been ruined."
'Mandi's MP Kangana arrived there after several days and, laughing, said- 'What can I do, I don't have a cabinet position'. Please show some sensitivity, Kangana ji," a rough translation of the party's post in Hindi suggested.

WHAT KANGANA RANAUT SAID
Addressing reporters over the situation in Mandi, Kangana said, 'I don't have any official cabinet when it comes to disaster relief or the disaster itself."
'I have my two brothers who are always with me. That's my cabinet. So, it's just these two," she added.
'The relief and restoration works have to be done by the state government, and as an MP, I can only apprise the Prime Minister and the Home Minister about the situation and seek liberal assistance," Ranaut told reporters.
'We are the link between the state and the central government, instrumental in getting projects from the centre to the state and raising issues and grievances of our constituencies with the centre," she said.
'How the state government is functioning, I can say that Congress will not come to power in the state for the next 20 years," she added.
Earlier, in an X post, Kangana wrote, 'It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. I tried reaching the flood-affected areas in Seraj and other areas in Mandi, but was advised by the respected Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to wait until the connectivity to the affected areas is restored."
Kangana took stock of the situation in Mandi on Sunday and asserted that the way relief work is being undertaken, the Congress will not return to power in the state in even 20 years.
She also said that as an MP, she could only apprise the prime minister of the situation.
'I am deeply pained to see the plight of the people. They have lost family members, houses have been washed away, several people are still missing, but we can only console the families who have lost their kin, and now it is time to provide relief."
RAIN WREAKS HAVOC IN HIMACHAL
Fourteen people have died, and a search is on for 31 missing, as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides caused massive destruction.
More than 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges, and several roads suffered damage in the disaster. A total of 164 cattle have perished.
About 200 roads have been rendered out of bounds for traffic, while 236 transformers and 278 supply schemes have been disrupted in Mandi district as of Sunday morning, according to the state emergency operation centre.

Argentina's Javier Milei closes agencies for roads, road safety

AP Image BUENOS AIRES: Argentine President Javier Milei's government on Monday announced fresh cuts to public spending, one day before the expiration of special powers granted by Congress. State agencies in charge of roads and highways will be shuttered to make way for a new entity created to oversee private road construction, government spokesman Manuel Adorni said, without specifying if layoffs would ensue. The government "will open bidding for 9,120 kilometres (5,667 miles) of roads," Adorni said. The measures were announced one day before special powers Congress granted Milei for one year are set to expire. The administration has said it will not seek an extension of those powers, which enabled the executive branch of government to take actions usually reserved for Congress. Some 65 measures enacted during this period "represent savings of $2 billion annually," the spokesman said. Milei, a self-declared "anarcho-capitalist," came to power in December 2023 wielding a chainsaw as a symbol of his plan to restore fiscal discipline and rein in inflation. He has since slashed public spending, yanked subsidies, halted public works and dismissed tens of thousands of public employees. Milei's order to close three agencies overseeing road maintenance and construction, traffic, and road safety will be published in the government gazette on Tuesday, Adorni said. A separate government statement on Monday announced the restructuring of seven state agencies, including institutes devoted to industrial and agricultural technology. Their functions will be brought under the Ministry of Economy. Workers at both institutes protested Monday, resulting in clashes with police. Last year, Argentina recorded its first budget surplus in a decade, and monthly inflation reached its lowest rate in five years at 1.5 percent in May. But the collateral damage has been a loss of purchasing power, jobs, and consumer spending. For months, Argentine citizens bearing the brunt of the cuts have mounted a weekly march on Wednesdays to protest the austerity measures, amid a heavy security presence.
