Raj receives 79% excess rainfall this year; monsoon expected to revive from Aug 9

1 2 Jaipur: Rajasthan has so far received 79% excess rainfall as compared to 2024. Most of the dams and reservoirs are brimming with water. However, the rainfall activity subsided on Sunday, and the Met office has forecast that in the coming days there will be a decrease in rainfall activity across the state. The Met office said heavy rainfall activity is likely to revive from August 9 onwards. Mount Abu received 70 mm of rainfall, which was the highest in the state. "The average rainfall in the state was 407.93 mm till Sunday compared to 274.30 mm of rainfall recorded till August 3, 2024. This is almost 79% higher rainfall compared to last year. And still, there are four spells of monsoon rainfall left, and it appears that the state is likely to get double the rainfall compared to what was recorded last year," said an officer with the Jaipur Met office. Meanwhile, two gates of Bisalpur Dam, including gate no 9 and gate no 10, remained open on Sunday, and 12,020 cusecs of water were released from the dam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa Prices in Dubai Might Be Lower Than You Think! More wet spell: Gurgaon to witness heavy rainfall for 3 days

Gurgaon: The city is set to witness more wet days ahead, with the weather department forecasting widespread rainfall over the next three days and issuing a "yellow alert" for it till Aug 5. On Sunday, the city woke up to cloudy skies after overnight showers that began around 10pm on Saturday and continued till midnight. "The current conditions are favourable for continued rainfall activity in parts of south Haryana, including Gurgaon. While the next three days are likely to see widespread rainfall, isolated intense showers may occur, especially till Aug 5. Thereafter, the rainfall will become scattered, but cloudy conditions may persist," said a Met official. So far, the monsoon has been normal in the city. Sunday morning rain turns Z'pur-Patiala road into a river

1 2 Mohali: A spell of heavy rain on Sunday morning exposed the glaring inadequacies in Zirakpur's drainage infrastructure, as the Zirakpur-Patiala road was left waterlogged and nearly impassable for hours. The flooding, which caused major traffic disruptions and left pedestrians struggling, has been attributed to unplanned construction and encroachments on natural drainage routes. The downpour led to severe water accumulation on the busy road stretch, effectively turning parts of it into a temporary river. Commuters faced immense hardship as vehicles stalled in knee-deep water, and pedestrians were forced to wade through the flooded roadway. While the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier installed large drainage pipes on both sides of the road — from Patiala Chowk to Gurdwara Nabha Sahib — to channel rainwater into a nearby natural stream, the effort has been undermined by unregulated construction activities. Landowners in the area had sold their fields to private builders, who in turn erected concrete boundary walls that blocked the flow of water into the stream, leading to stagnation on the roads during rains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo "This is not the first time the area has flooded. The lack of proper drainage and unchecked construction on natural drains is the main reason. Despite previous complaints, no permanent solution has been implemented," said a local resident. Urban planners and environmentalists have long warned against building over natural water channels, but enforcement remains weak. Sunday's incident has once again triggered demands from residents for immediate government intervention. "This situation is both avoidable and unacceptable," said another resident. "Authorities must act against encroachments on drains and plan a proper drainage system before the next rain brings the city to a standstill again." Civic authorities have been urged to conduct a detailed survey of the affected area, identify the obstructions to natural water flow, and demolish illegal walls or structures built over water channels. With the monsoon season still underway, residents fear further disruptions if the matter is not urgently addressed.
