
India's Kalyan Jewellers bets store-opening spree will fuel revenue growth, top executive says
Record high gold prices have not deterred the wealthy from investing in gold and buying ornaments in the second-largest gold buying country but the middle class is switching to lower-carat and lightweight jewellery.
Consumers are favouring chains over independent jewellers, shopping frequently, and spending more on gifts, Kalyan Jewellers' Executive Director Ramesh Kalyanaraman said in an interview.
"The advantage of Kalyan today is we can grow across the country ... We have a lot of markets to go and explore," he said, forecasting that revenue would "easily" rise over 25% for the fiscal year that started on April 1.
The jeweller, which had 278 showrooms branded "Kalyan" and 73 stores under the more affordable "Candere" brand in India at March-end, plans to open shop at 160 new locations this fiscal year, with the additions split evenly between the two brands.
Its bigger rival Titan (TITN.NS), opens new tab had more than a thousand jewellery stores in India at March-end, with roughly half of those under its flagship "Tanishq" brand.
In three years, Kalyan Jewellers aims its "Kalyan" branded stores to catch up with Titan's "Tanishq" count, the executive director said, but flagged that the rapid expansion would squeeze the group's core earnings margin.
For the year ending on March 31, Kalyan Jewellers reported a more than one-third rise in revenue to 250.5 billion rupees ($2.9 billion), helped by double-digit percentage same-store sales growth as it opened 136 stores in India.
Titan's mainstay jewellery business saw a 21% increase in total income to 465.7 billion rupees for the fiscal year.

Only 15 electric vehicle brands in China will be financially viable by 2030, AlixPartners says
BEIJING, July 3 (Reuters) - Only 15 out of the 129 brands that currently sell electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in China will be financially viable by 2030, as intense competition forces consolidation and some to exit the market, consultancy AlixPartners said on Thursday. These 15 brands are projected to account for approximately 75% of China's EV and plug-in hybrid market by the end of the decade, each averaging annual sales of 1.02 million vehicles, AlixPartners said, without specifying brand names. However, consolidation in China is expected to proceed more slowly than in other markets, said Stephen Dyer, head of AlixPartners' automotive practice in Asia, because local governments may support non-viable brands due to their importance to regional economies, employment and supply chains. "China is one of the most competitive NEV (new energy vehicle) markets in the world, with intense price wars, rapid innovation, and new entrants constantly raising the bar," Dyer said. "This environment has driven remarkable advances in technology and cost efficiency, but it has also left many companies struggling to achieve sustainable profitability." China's automotive market, the world's largest, is currently facing a price war and significant overcapacity, both of which are straining profitability. Aside from BYD ( opens new tab and Li Auto ( opens new tab, no other publicly listed Chinese EV maker has achieved full-year profitability. Chinese regulators have called for automakers to halt the price war. However, Dyer said it would likely continue, but through "hidden" factors such as insurance subsidies and zero-interest financing rather than direct price cuts. The capacity utilisation ratio at Chinese car plants fell to an average of 50% in China last year, the lowest in a decade, pressuring profits, Dyer said.

Louis Vuitton Korea says systems breach led to customer data leak
SEOUL, July 4 (Reuters) - A systems breach at Louis Vuitton ( opens new tab Korea in June led to the leak of some of customer data including contact information, but did not involve customers' financial information, the luxury brand's South Korea unit said on Friday. "We regret to inform that an unauthorized third party temporarily accessed our system resulting in the leak of some customer information," the unit said in a statement. The company became aware of the breach on Wednesday and had notified government authorities, the statement said. Measures had been taken to contain the breach and to boost system security, it added. The South Korean units of two other labels, Christian Dior Couture and Tiffany, under the world's largest luxury group have been under government investigations since May for customer data leaks they reported earlier in the year, according to the country's Personal Information Protection Commission.
