Trump to dismantle Syria sanctions program as Israel ties eyed - Region
President Donald Trump on Monday will formally dismantle US sanctions against Syria, hoping to reintegrate the war-battered country into the global economy as Israel eyes ties with its new leadership. Trump lifted most sanctions against Syria in May, responding to appeals from Saudi Arabia and Turkey after former Islamist guerrilla Ahmed al-Sharaa ended a half-century of rule by the Assad family. In an executive order to be signed later Monday, Trump will end a "national emergency" in place since 2004 that imposed sweeping sanctions on Syria, affecting most state-run institutions including the central bank. "This is in an effort to promote and support the country's path to stability and peace," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. She said the United States will still maintain sanctions on elements of the former government including Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia late last year. Syria recently carried out its first electronic transfer through the international banking system since around the time it descended into a brutal civil war in 2011. Israel kept pounding military sites in its historic adversary after the fall of Assad. But Israel said earlier Monday that it was interested in normalizing ties with Syria as well as Lebanon, two countries where influence from Iran's clerical state has declined sharply in part due to Israeli strikes. The United States still classifies Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, a designation that could take longer to lift and which also severely discourages investment. Egypt, Qatar Discuss Gaza Hostage Release as Israeli Strikes Kill 22
Ahmed Emam On Tuesday, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Qatari counterpart Mohamed Abdelrahman held discussions focused on efforts to secure the release of detainees held in Gaza and to ensure the urgent and unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged territory, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Abdelatty also reviewed the arrangements for Egypt's hosting of the Early Recovery and Reconstruction Conference for Gaza, to be held immediately after a ceasefire agreement is reached, in cooperation with the Palestinian government and the United Nations, the statement added. The talks come amid escalating violence in the Gaza Strip, where the death toll from Israeli airstrikes has risen to 22 since dawn on Monday. The situation underscores mounting regional and international concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ongoing hostilities that continue to claim civilian lives. Both Egypt and Qatar have played key mediation roles in previous ceasefire efforts between Israel and Palestinian factions, with diplomatic efforts intensifying as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates and calls for a truce grow louder from the international community. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean Arts & Culture "6 Ayam" Sets Streaming Date
