
Smythson has been acquired by Oakley Capital, targets US, Europe, Japan growth
The company said it 'marks an exciting new chapter in Smythson's 137-year history of British craftsmanship. Following years of strengthening the brand's foundation and securing its current position, Smythson's partnership with Oakley will help to accelerate growth and expand brand presence'.
The luxury business has become part of Iconic BrandCo, Oakley's vehicle for luxury, heritage brands, which includes 'complementary' labels such as Italian homewares company Alessi, British luxury luggage specialist Globe-Trotter, and British high-end leather goods and apparel brand Connolly, in which Oakley invested only in 2024.
Iconic BrandCo also has investments in Fornasetti and Fabbrica Pelletterie Milano.
The new owner said the label will 'benefit from Oakley's proven value-creation strategies and expertise in accelerating international expansion, digitising operations, enhancing brand positioning and digital marketing. Smythson will leverage this investment to prioritise global growth, with a specific focus on the US, Japanese and European markets, whilst continuing to strengthen the UK home market'.
It will take a multi-channel approach to 'drive growth, expand global distribution, develop international franchise agreements, and launch innovative brand activations and collaborations'.
A few months ago, Smythson filed its accounts for the year to March 2024 and said that turnover for the business increased to £27.26 million from £23.65 million while gross profit rose to almost £19.6 million from just over £16 million. The operating result was still a loss, but a smaller one at £5.9 million compared to £6.9 million the year before. The loss both before and after tax was also down at £6.6 million from a negative £7.3 million a year earlier.
The company, which also closed its New Bond Street store during that financial year, did say in the accounts filing that business was improving. Oakley clearly agrees and sees potential in it.

EU to unveil long-delayed 2040 climate target
Brussels is making the 2040 announcement as much of Europe roasts in an early summer heatwave -- which scientists say are becoming more intense, frequent and widespread due to human-induced climate change. The target is a key milestone towards the European Union's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The bloc says it has cut climate-warming emissions by 37 percent compared to 1990 levels. After months of tough negotiations with EU capitals, the European Commission is finally set to stick to the objective it announced last year of cutting emissions by 90 percent by the year 2040. But in a bid to appease more sceptical member states, the EU's executive arm will introduce some flexibility into the calculation, much to the chagrin of environmental defenders. From 2036, the commission could allow the bloc's 27 member states to count carbon credits purchased to finance projects outside Europe towards their emission cuts, for up to three percent of the total, according to a draft document seen by AFP. But climate groups are fiercely opposed to such a measure. Backed by scientific studies, they question the impact of such credits -- given for things like tree-planting or renewable-energy projects -- on reducing overall CO2 emissions. "Three percent is not insignificant. These are potentially considerable sums that will be spent abroad instead of financing the transition" in Europe, said Neil Makaroff, an expert at the climate-focused Strategic Perspectives think tank. "But there's a political compromise to be found," he said. "The challenge will be for the EU to establish a standard so that these international credits truly help cut emissions and not leave individual states to their own devices." 'Don't strain ourselves' EU environment ministers will discuss the objective at a meeting in mid-July before an expected vote on approving the measures on September 18. It will only become law after EU lawmakers also sign off on the target. The commission's hope is that the 2040 objective will be approved before the UN climate conference (COP30) in November in the northern Brazilian city of Belem. But that gives little time for negotiations, which have been complicated by a rightward shift and rising climate scepticism in many European countries. The EU's climate chief, Wopke Hoekstra, has spent months travelling across the bloc trying to find a compromise. For some states, including the Czech Republic, the 90-percent target is unrealistic. Meanwhile, others including Italy and Hungary worry about the burden of decarbonising heavy industry at a time when Europe is working to strengthen its industry in the face of fierce competition from the United States and China. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has suggested a target of 80 or 85 percent, while France has expressed doubts over how the EU will reach its objective. French President Emmanuel Macron wants guarantees for the decarbonisation of industry and support for nuclear energy, the largest source of power in France. But the commission can count on the support of other countries including Spain and Denmark, which took over the rotating EU presidency this week. And the three-percent "flexibility" -- which mirrors demands made in the new German government's coalition agreement -- should help keep the economic powerhouse on board. When it comes to Europe's international commitments, Macron has also stressed that the bloc is only bound to present a midway target for 2035 at COP30 in Belem, and not the 2040 objective. "Let's not strain ourselves," Macron told reporters last week. "If we have (a 2040 target) for Belem, great, but if it takes longer, let's take the time," he said.

Eyewear e-tailer Mia Burton merges with Lipari, forecasts €23.7 million revenue in 2025
Mia Burton, an international e-tailer specialised in high-end sunglasses and eyeglasses founded in 2022, has announced it has merged by incorporation with Lipari, an eyewear and optical products retailer set up in Palermo, Sicily, over 50 years ago, which recently opened a new store in Milan. The goals of the operation are for the partners to boost their omnichannel business, strengthen the group structure, and create synergies between online and offline retail. Mia Burton is set to consolidate its online presence and international footprint through a data-driven approach, while Lipari will continue to concentrate on physical retail with its selection of premium brands and sector expertise. Mia Burton and Lipari's joint goals include scaling operations and logistics, and increasing product customisation by sharing customer data and solutions. 'In a sector like eyewear that, unlike other fashion and luxury sectors, continues to grow chiefly in the digital realm, the new entity is preparing to develop different business lines, enhancing complementary skills within a single organisation. Pursuing this operating strategy, the group is aiming for revenue of €23.7 million in 2025,' said Mia Burton and Lipari in a press release. Mia Burton will contribute its expertise in international e-tail and premium brand management. The site is deployed in five languages – English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish – and is active virtually worldwide. Its main markets are the USA, the UK, and northern Europe, while Canada and Australia as emerging markets. Following the merger, Mia Burton intends to pursue its internationalisation path, opening new logistics hubs in the USA and Europe, and expanding its e-tail business to new markets such as the Arabian peninsula. In 2025, notably in Q2, Mia Burton has stepped up its efforts in Italy, posting 99% growth on an annual basis. 'We are not chasing an ego project or short-term revenue. In order to become a significant force, the most important thing is to build a solid project, and a coherent one. We are imagining a path unlike that of a cash-burning start-up,' said Carlo Alberto Lipari, CEO of Mia Burton. 'The merger with Lipari realises our vision of a business unit structure that multiplies existing synergies and enables us to tap new opportunities. Although Italy is a priority, we will adopt a gradual approach, since e-tail penetration in the optical sector in Italy has always been slower than in other countries. Precisely for this reason, our online focus on the Italian market continues to go hand in hand with traditional retail, and we are constantly searching for high-profile locations in [Italy's] main cities,' he added. Lipari said that the group will continue to extend its retail footprint with new openings in Italy, focusing on the in-store experience and a direct relationship with international brands, as shown by the recent limited-edition collaboration with French brand Peter & May. Mia Burton, in addition to consolidating its position as a multi-brand platform for high-end eyewear, will focus on selling its proprietary line of progressive lenses, Mia Burton Vision. Mia Burton currently sells 65 brands, from major luxury names such as Cartier, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta (by Kering Eyewear), Prada and Miu Miu (by Luxottica), to niche brands such as Jacques Marie Mage, Chrome Hearts, Cutler & Gross and Kuboraum, as well as independent brands with a cult following like Peter & May, Garrett Leight, and Leight, and iconic eyewear brands like Ray-Ban, Persol and Oakley.
