4 killed as taxi plunges near Rohtang; flash floods ravage Himachal Pradesh

Time of Indiaa day ago
SHIMLA: Four people were killed and another critically injured Sunday morning when their taxi veered off a foggy mountain road at Rahni Nala near Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh and plunged into a deep ravine.
The crash came as flash floods triggered by twin cloudbursts overnight pounded Chamba and Mandi, pushing the hill state's monsoon death toll to 78, including road accidents that claimed 28 lives. The estimated damage across the state has climbed to Rs 573 crore.
Floodwaters swept away roads, bridges, and water mills, while 63 tourists from Punjab, Haryana, UP, Tamil Nadu, and New Delhi - stuck at Seraj valley - were rescued and brought to Karsog in Mandi after emergency road repairs.
Blinding fog may have caused the fatal accident near Rohtang Pass, said DSP KD Sharma. Skid marks on the road showed where the vehicle lost control & swerved off the edge.
The deceased were identified as Ranjit Singh, 31, and Harvinder Singh, 27, both from Hoshiarpur in Punjab; Narendra Kumar, 34, the driver from Simsa in Kullu; and Dima Ram, 32, from Karsog. Ravi Kumar, 24, also from Hoshiarpur, remains in critical condition.
All passengers, including the driver, worked at a hotel in Manali's Simsa area.
Mandi remains one of the hardest-hit districts, with 183 roads still closed. Rescue teams from
NDRF
and SDRF are using drones to search for missing people.
Amid mounting criticism over her delayed response, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut visited Thunag in Seraj valley Sunday. "Though I have no official team or personal fund, I still managed to reach the affected areas. I am also a Himachali and a Pahari," she said.
Ranaut defended her absence, saying former CM Jairam Thakur advised her to wait until roads reopened. "PM Modi is abroad but fully aware. Centre has acted swiftly," she said.

‘Fresh-Up Homes' to come up at remote tourist getaways in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is set to take a major stride in women-friendly tourism with the launch of 'Fresh-Up Homes' — an initiative aimed at providing clean and safe rest facilities for female travellers at rural and remote destinations. The initiative aims to address critical infrastructure gaps — especially the lack of adequate sanitation facilities — in emerging tourist destinations along with women empowerment by offering financial support to 100 women-led Fresh-Up Homes across the state. The project is being implemented by the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society (KRTM), and Rs 25 lakh has been allocated for it. Each Fresh-Up Home will feature essential amenities including a toilet, bathroom, clean water, ventilation, lighting and a sanitary pad incinerator — creating a safe and hygienic pit stop for women on the move. An senior official with the tourism department said women entrepreneurs registered with the KRTM will receive a financial grant of Rs 25,000 per unit. The subsidy will be disbursed in two instalments — Rs 12,000 upfront and Rs 13,000 after the completion of the facility. 'Fresh-Up Homes can be set up on private land owned by the entrepreneur or attached to existing homes, making it a flexible and low-investment business model,' the official said.

'Apna Ghar' resting facilities for truckers along national highways find more takers

NEW DELHI: Resting facilities along national highways for truck drivers called Apna Ghars - equipped with all amenities - at just Rs 112 for eight hours are finding more takers. Data shows that there has been a more than five-fold increase in booking by drivers in June compared to the April-May period. While there were 3,348 bookings in April-May or 55 per day during the two months, this surged to 16,559 bookings or 552 per day in June. Govt expects that as the number offacilities increase, there will be a further rise in the number of bookings. The scheme was launched to address the hardship faced by drivers who often slept in trucks or at dhahas due to lack of good and affordable places along highways. Officials said over 65,000 drivers have downloaded the Apna Ghar mobile app and registered on it. To attract more users, a scheme offering free dormitory stays was introduced in June 2025 with the condition that drivers have to buy 50 litres of high-speed diesel from Apna Ghar sites. The promotional scheme will run for three months, they said. As of June, 368 Apna Ghar have been set up by oil marketing companies (OMCs) including four on the under-construction Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. First aircraft with 4-class cabin to touch down in city next week

1 2 Kolkata: The first aircraft with a four-class configuration in its cabin is scheduled to touch down in Kolkata at 7.15 pm on July 18. Dubai-based Emirates Airlines, which currently operates a three-class configuration in the Boeing B 777 aircraft it uses for the flight, will switch to a four-class configuration with the introduction of the retrofitted aircraft. Etihad, the other carrier from the UAE that ferries passengers from Kolkata to Europe and the US via Abu Dhabi, is also set to change the aircraft from Airbus A 320, which offers only economy and business class, to A 321-LR from Sept. This aircraft will offer 14 flat beds in the business class along with two first-class seats. The other Gulf Qatar operates two aircraft on the sector: the A 350 four days a week and the B 787 Dreamliner on the remaining three days. Both aircraft have two seat configurations: economy and business. Fly Dubai that has four flights a week to Dubai uses a B 737 MAX aircraft that offers business and economy class seats. Low-cost carrier Air Arabia that has three fights a week has 170 all-economy seats on the A 320. Emirates' four-class B 777 will offer 24 premium economy seats arranged in a 2-4-2 layout with six-way adjustable headrests for added comfort and space. The upgraded business-class cabin will offer more privacy, with 40 seats in 1-2-1 configuration. The aircraft will also feature eight first-class suites. The refreshed economy-class cabin will have 260 ergonomic seats with leather headrests that can be adjusted vertically. While a return economy class ticket to Europe on Emirates costs around Rs 80,000, the premium economy fare is expected to be around Rs 1 lakh-Rs 1.5 lakh. In contrast, the business class fare ranges from Rs 2 lakh-Rs 2.3 lakh, while it costs Rs 4 lakh-Rs 4.5 lakh to fly first class. "The four-class configuration, including the premium economy, will be offered in the evening flights that operate four times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday. The remaining seven flights will continue to offer three cabin classes until all aircraft in the fleet are retrofitted to feature the premium economy cabin," said Emirates vice-president (India & Nepal) Mohammad Sarhan. Travel Agents Association of India chairman (East) Anjani Dhanuka said there was excitement among frequent flyers over the improved legroom and elevated dining experience with multi-course meals that the premium economy will offer. "Passengers will also get generous checked-in baggage allowance of 35kg and a further 10kg of carry-on baggage," he said.
