Who Is Varang on Avatar 3 Poster? Fire and Ash Villain Explained

Yahoo5 days ago
The Avatar: Fire and Ash teaser poster introduces Varang, an intriguing new character fans are about to meet soon. Oona Chaplin, who is best known for playing Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones, makes her debut in Pandora as the new villain. Needless to say, fans are eager to get a closer look into the character before Avatar 3's premiere this year.
So, here's everything we know about Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Oona Chaplin's Avatar 3 villain Varang on Fire and Ash Poster explained
Avatar: Fire and Ash will introduce Varang as a new villain in the franchise. Played by Oona Chaplin, Varang is the leader of the Ash Clan, one of the many new tribes in Pandora that fans will meet in the upcoming installments (via ScreenRant).
Varang will break the streak of only humans being portrayed as the villains in previous Avatar movies. RDA leaders were hell bent on colonizing Pandora and forcefully claiming its land and resources.
This led to the Na'vi people emerging as heroes against the human colonizers. However, in Fire and Ash, the narrative will not be that straightforward. This time, fans will likely get to see a darker side of the Na'vi with the introduction of the Ash Clan and Varang.
In a recent interview with Empire, director James Cameron shared a glimpse of the Ash Clan's background. He explained that the tribe's villainy is a result of enduring years of mistreatment and hardship.
'Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that,' he stated. 'She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil,' explained Cameron.
Speaking of the shift in the franchise's usual narrative, Cameron said, 'One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We're trying to evolve beyond the 'all humans are bad, all Na'vi are good' paradigm.'
The director also gushed about Chaplin's spectacular performance as the Ash villain. 'She's an enemy, an adversarial character but [Chaplin] makes her feel so real and alive,' he stated.
Avatar: Fire & Ash is all set to make its theatrical debut on December 19, 2025.

Critics once doubted James Cameron — but can Avatar: Fire and Ash prove them wrong again?

James Cameron's hugely successful film franchise will return with Avatar: Fire & Ash in December. Avatar will soon return with the third chapter in its epic, otherworldly story in Fire and Ash, but the jury is still out on whether it can sustain the momentum the franchise needs. The movie, which premieres in December 2025, promises to be a war movie of grand proportions thanks to its exploration of new cultures among the Na'vi and the animosity that has developed between the large blue creatures and a newly introduced clan, the Ash people. Everything is at stake in the upcoming film, not just for Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family but also for James Cameron himself. Avatar is one of the most expensive film series ever created, so the films need to make a lot at the box office to be deemed a success. So far it has done that, and more, as the original Avatar became the first film to make more than $2bn at the box office while the sequel The Way of Water beat that. But can the franchise strike gold again? There does seem to be a reason that audiences have gravitated so strongly to the Titanic director's fantastical world so far. The story is perhaps the oldest there is, the battle between good and evil. The first and second explore this through the clash between humans and Na'vi, while Fire and Ash is arguably doing the same thing, but with slightly more nuance because it's between different cultures within the alien species. It's the kind of story that audiences will always be drawn to, regardless of its simplicity, actually, perhaps because of it. It doesn't matter if they're seven-foot-tall blue people, the Na'vi are fascinating and experience the same things we do. Viewers from all walks of life can relate to and be transported by Avatar; that's the beauty of Cameron's vision for Pandora. Critics though, for better or worse, are now quite divided by the franchise — where the first was deemed a movie marvel that changed the film landscape forever, The Way of Water wasn't received as well with reviews veering wildly between 5 star and 2 stars, one reviewer even described the 2022 film a glorified "trillion-dollar screensaver". But if ever there was a time that proved that critics aren't the be-all and end-all of movie success, it was The Way of Water, because the film earned $2.32bn worldwide and became the highest-grossing film since the Covid pandemic. Why is that? Because audiences want escapism, that's the whole point of cinema; audiences want to forget their troubles and be taken far, far away for a few hours, and Avatar is the perfect movie for it, thanks to its awe-inspiring visuals and innovative use of technology. The question is, can Fire and Ash mirror the success of the first two Avatar films? If early reactions to the trailer are anything to go by, it will do that and more. In fact, even the critics are back on side ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, for example, wrote on X: "I just EXPERIENCED the #AvatarFireAndAsh trailer in glorious 3D. I'm breathless... What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise." While critic Austin Burke wrote on the social media platform: "There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and epic doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice… It is truly beyond epic. THE HYPE IS REAL.' With praise like this, the buzz is going to be gaining momentum quickly for Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of its December release. One thing is for sure, it'll mark a great end of the year for Hollywood. No one should ever count James Cameron out, really, the director always has a clear vision and he knows how to make epic films that have huge mainstream appeal, whether that be sweeping romances like Titanic or gut-punching action like The Terminator. He knows how to make a great popcorn movie, the kind that will stand the test of time and do extremely well at the box office. There's a reason he is seen as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. And the Avatar film franchise could well become his magnum opus by the time it reaches its fifth, and currently final, film in 2031. But, before that, at least, we have Fire & Ash to enjoy — long live cinema. Avatar: Fire & Ash premieres in UK cinemas on 19 December, 2025.

‘Avatar: Fire & Ash' Trailer Leaks Online: James Cameron Returns With Fiery Stunner

The action-packed first trailer for James Cameron's next Avatar fantasy epic has leaked online — and the footage looks spectacular. Disney is rolling out the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash 'exclusively' in theaters in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps. And just like with Christopher Nolan's 'only in theaters' trailer for The Odyssey early this month, grainy unauthorized copies have begun to circulate. But give some credit to Disney here — the Fire & Ash trailer is, at least, a bit tougher to find than the trailer Nolan's Universal film was, with copies being taken down as fast as they pop up. Fan site The Sietch of Sci-Fi said the trailer 'looks incredible.' Another raved that the trailer was 'some of the most beautiful footage I've seen all year [and I was] struck by the real sense of doom and rage — fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles.' While another entertainment writer wrote, '[The trailer] started out as 'meh, more of the same' and ended with 'yup, another billion to James Cameron.'' And a film critic wrote: 'The visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and 'epic' doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice.' The trailer introduces two new tribes, the Wind Traders and the fire-hurling Ash People clan. The footage shows (trailer spoilers here — if that's a thing) plenty of intense arial fighting between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na'vi family, the Ash People clan and, of course, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang, now sporting dramatic white, black and red warpaint, suggesting he might have made an alliance with the Ash People). At one point, a captive Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) is warned by a new villain, Varang (Oona Chaplin), 'Your goddess has no dominion here.' Sully — who warns, 'we cannot live like this' — is taken captive and paraded by the occupation forces. And Spider (Jack Champion) seems like he's in jeopardy quite a bit. The first Avatar, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time, raking in $2.9 billion globally. The first sequel, 2022's The Way of Water, charted as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time (with $2.3 billion), beating expectations and silencing doubters that the Oscar winner could pull off another Avatar blockbuster. At this point, few doubt Cameron's ability to generate massive box office returns with the Avatar franchise and confidence is high that Fire & Ash will deliver when its released as a major holiday tentpole on Dec. 19. While a run time hasn't yet been announced, Cameron has teased that Fire and Ash 'will be a bit longer' than The Way of Water. The last film was three hours and 12 minutes. 'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of [Way of Water],' Cameron recently said. 'The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.' [Fire & Ash] will actually be a little bit longer than [Way of Water].' Cameron plans five Avatar films and has said he intends to direct them all, as well. Much of the footage, Cameron has said, has already been shot. Avatar 4 is set for Dec. 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 will arrive Dec. 19, 2031. Cameron also hopes to adapt the Charles Pellegrino books Ghosts of Hiroshima and Last Train From Hiroshima as soon as his Avatar schedule permits. The film would focus on the true story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima as well as the explosion in Nagasaki. If it comes to fruition, it would mark Cameron's first non-Avatar film since 1997's Titanic. Fire & Ash cast members include Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Bailey Bass, Jemaine Clement and David Thewlis. The official description of Fire and Ash: 'Jake and Neytiri's family grapples with grief after Neteyam's death, encountering a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.' Disney had no comment on the leak. I got an early look at the 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' trailer, and now I'm burning to see more

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Last night, I attended a media screening for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" at IMAX Sydney that held a special bonus for those who turned up early: Disney would be offering an early look at the upcoming trailer for "Avatar: Fire and Ash" ahead of the film, and not only that, the trailer would be shown in IMAX 3D. In fact, the trailer wasn't just shown once, but on a loop for around 20 minutes. I stopped counting after the first few times, but I would estimate that the trailer was shown around ten times in a row. Admittedly, the trailer kinda lost some of its initial wow factor after a few watches. That said, I'm still really excited to see the movie, as it looks like the most epic entry in the 'Avatar' franchise yet. While the trailer itself isn't online yet, it will be attached to theatrical showings of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps", which releases this Friday in the US. In the meantime, here's what I saw. The darkest 'Avatar' entry yet Right from the outset, it's clear that "Fire and Ash" will be the most intense chapter in the "Avatar" saga yet. For the first time, we see hostility amongst the Na'vi clans, with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and the oceanic Metkayina clan drawn into a conflict with the Mangkwan clan, or Ash People, as they're also known. The Mangkwan are a clearly formidable clan, demonstrating a mastery of fire. Throughout the trailer, they are shown spreading fire from their fingertips, shooting flaming arrows, and burning down sections of forest. The trailer also shows the return of Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), whose Avatar form is shown walking alone into the Ash People territory. It's a more desolate area than we're used to seeing on Pandora, with an enormous volcano spewing red lava in the distance in one shot. A formidable foe The Ash People are led by Varang (Oona Chaplin), a Na'vi female with an unsettling presence who wears a red and black headdress and red war paint on her hands and face. At one point, Ouaritch is shown wearing the same red paint, indicating he will team up with the Varang in an attempt to take down the Sully family once and for all. Although the trailer doesn't outright explain the conflict, it's clear that the Ash People are ideologically opposed to the typical Na'vi way of life, outright rejecting the deity Eywa and choosing to live disconnected from the natural world that other Na'vi hold sacred. It also appears that Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) will once again play a major part in the story. In the trailer, we see Ronal (Kate Winslet) tell her, "If there's something you can do, then you must do it." During another moment, Varang eerily leans in towards Kiri and delivers the trailer's standout line, "Your goddess has no dominion here." Everyone is in a dark place As for Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), it appears as though the Sully matriarch has grown even angrier since the events of "Avatar: The Way of Water", with Jake at one point telling her "You cannot live like this, baby.... In hate!" Elsewhere, the trailer has plenty of action, including large-scale battles, the return of the Tulkun, and the character of Spider (Jack Champion) still seemingly torn about whether to side with the Na'vi or his fellow humans. For me, the trailer's most tantalizing moment is the scene depicting Jake's capture by human forces, where he's led before cheering crowds taking photos. Could this be the end of Jake Sully? I certainly hope not. Needless to say, I can't wait to see more of "Avatar: Fire and Ash". It looks to be the most epic and emotional entry in the series yet, and I've learned to never doubt director James Cameron. "Avatar: Fire and Ash" hits theaters on December 19 in the US and UK, and December 18 in Australia. With my hype for the movie now at an all-time high, I think I'll be diving into the "Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora" video game while I count the days until opening night.
