A sene from 20th Century Studios' Avatar: Fire and Ash Pic: 20th Century Studios The trailer sees the Sully family dealing with the aftermath of the second instalment, The Way of Water, with Jake turning to his wife and telling her that she 'cannot live like this, baby, in hate'. Previously released concept art introduced Avatar fans to the Ash Clan, and their leader Varang, and the Wind Traders who corral gigantic Pandoran creatures to soar among the clouds. Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) in 20th Century Studios' Avatar: Fire and Ash Pic: 20th Century Studios Teasing the fearsome figurehead of the Ash Clan, Cameron shared how the group have gone through an immense amount of hardship, and hence, Varang will do anything for them, good or bad. In fact, the team went as far as not making the decisions made in Avatar Fire and Ash 'black and white simplistic' and evolve beyond the narrative that the humans on the planet are all bad and that 'all Na'vi' are good. A scene from 20th Century Studios' Avatar: Fire and Ash Pic: 20th Century Studios As for Avatar Fire and Ash's Wind Traders, Cameron told Empire Magazine: 'They're nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages. And you know, they're just fun. 'Like all Na'vi, they live in a symbiosis with their creatures. If you've got any nautical blood in your veins, you'll want to be on [their] ship.'

On Monday, July 28, the first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted online after moviegoers first saw the teaser in theaters ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The trailer introduces Avatar fans to a new biome within the planet and its inhabitants, the Mangkwan Clan, a.k.a. the Ash Clan, who live near an active volcano. The group is led by a new character named Varang (Oona Chaplin), who appears to develop an antagonistic relationship with series leads Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña ) and their children. Cameron and Disney originally announced Fire and Ash's title at Disney's D23 fan event on Aug. 9, 2024. The movie arrives three years after 2022's The Way of Water, which first introduced Avatar fans to Kate Winslet's character Ronal and Cliff Curtis' Tonowari. In March, Cameron confirmed that the new Avatar movie "will actually be a little bit longer than" The Way of Water, even though the second installment already ran for 3 hours and 12 minutes. While speaking with Empire in January, Cameron revealed that Fire and Ash's conflicts will not feel as "black-and-white simplistic" as the series' first two movies. 'We're trying to evolve beyond the 'all humans are bad, all Na'vi are good' paradigm,' he said at the time. At CinemaCon 2025 in April, Oscar-winner Saldaña added that Fire and Ash will introduce a second new clan called the wind traders, whom she described as "a peaceful, nomadic air-traveling clan," as well as the Ash People, whom Saldaña said have "forsaken" the Na'vi god. Footage shown of the movie at CinemaCon implies that Fire and Ash picks up just moments after The Way of Water ended with the death of Neytiri and Jake's eldest son Neteyem. Returning cast members for Fire and Ash also include Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco and Jack Champion. David Thewlis also joins the cast. Who Is Varang on Avatar 3 Poster? Fire and Ash Villain Explained

The Avatar: Fire and Ash teaser poster introduces Varang, an intriguing new character fans are about to meet soon. Oona Chaplin, who is best known for playing Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones, makes her debut in Pandora as the new villain. Needless to say, fans are eager to get a closer look into the character before Avatar 3's premiere this year. So, here's everything we know about Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Oona Chaplin's Avatar 3 villain Varang on Fire and Ash Poster explained Avatar: Fire and Ash will introduce Varang as a new villain in the franchise. Played by Oona Chaplin, Varang is the leader of the Ash Clan, one of the many new tribes in Pandora that fans will meet in the upcoming installments (via ScreenRant). Varang will break the streak of only humans being portrayed as the villains in previous Avatar movies. RDA leaders were hell bent on colonizing Pandora and forcefully claiming its land and resources. This led to the Na'vi people emerging as heroes against the human colonizers. However, in Fire and Ash, the narrative will not be that straightforward. This time, fans will likely get to see a darker side of the Na'vi with the introduction of the Ash Clan and Varang. In a recent interview with Empire, director James Cameron shared a glimpse of the Ash Clan's background. He explained that the tribe's villainy is a result of enduring years of mistreatment and hardship. 'Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that,' he stated. 'She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil,' explained Cameron. Speaking of the shift in the franchise's usual narrative, Cameron said, 'One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We're trying to evolve beyond the 'all humans are bad, all Na'vi are good' paradigm.' The director also gushed about Chaplin's spectacular performance as the Ash villain. 'She's an enemy, an adversarial character but [Chaplin] makes her feel so real and alive,' he stated. Avatar: Fire & Ash is all set to make its theatrical debut on December 19, 2025. First Avatar 3 trailer introduces Varang, a deadly Na'vi villain in Fire and Ash

The first official trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron's iconic sci-fi franchise, has been unveiled—offering fans a fiery look into Pandora's darkest chapter yet. Releasing on December 19, Fire and Ash shifts the conflict from human invaders to a brutal internal war among the Na'vi themselves. The highlight of the trailer is the introduction of Varang, the franchise's first full-on Na'vi villain, voiced by Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin. As the fierce leader of the Ash Clan, Varang resides in the volcanic highlands and wears a haunting red-and-black headdress. In one chilling moment, she hisses at Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), 'Your goddess has no dominion here,' hinting at a deeper spiritual divide between Na'vi factions. The trailer also reveals Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their children navigating both familial bonds and escalating warfare. Lo'ak (Britain Dalton) continues to bond with Tsireya (Bailey Bass), while epic visuals of magma-filled landscapes, returning oceanic Tulkun, flying Ikran, and new jellyfish-like airships expand Pandora's mythology. With Avatar and Way of Water grossing over $5.2 billion combined, expectations are high. Avatar: Fire and Ash is not just a sequel—it's a bold new direction for the franchise. Two more sequels are already in the works, with releases set for 2029 and 2031.
