India Commits $20 Billion For Maritime Infrastructure Development: Sarbananda Sonowal

India.com05-06-2025
New Delhi: India has committed $20 billion for infrastructure development focused on enhancing multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday.
Delivering the keynote speech at the India Country Session in Oslo and highlighted India's growing maritime capabilities, including a favourable policy-induced investment environment, proven shipbuilding strength, circular economy efforts, and innovative financing plans to accelerate sectoral growth, he said: "Under the able and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is moving decisively toward the goals of Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat. These goals envisage India as a modern, self-reliant, inclusive, and globally engaged economy."
In this journey, the maritime sector is central - not just as a driver of growth, but as an enabler of resilience, sustainability, and strategic connectivity. "India has launched wide-ranging efforts to expand port infrastructure, integrate logistics systems, and improve ease of doing business for the private sector. These reforms are already bearing fruit in the form of increased port efficiency, stronger cargo flows, and rising investor confidence," he said.
The Shipping Minister also highlighted strengthening of maritime connectivity and supply chains with strategic corridors like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
"India is working to become a credible and competitive alternative. Through policy incentives, ease of doing business, and infrastructure enhancement, we are laying the foundation for India to emerge as one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047," he said.
India is establishing three Green Hydrogen Hub Ports — Kandla, Tuticorin, and Paradip — to support the manufacturing of green hydrogen and its derivatives and to pioneer the use of alternative fuels in the maritime domain.
"We are also proud to lead under the IMO's Green Voyage 2050 initiative, assisting developing countries in their energy transitions," he added. India's maritime digital ecosystem is undergoing a transformation. Initiatives such as ONOP (One Nation-One Port Process), National Logistics Portal (Marine), and MAITRI – Virtual Trade Corridor are creating a unified national platform for port services and EXIM trade.
"These efforts are improving operational transparency, reducing transaction time and building real-time data systems. We are also engaging with global partners to establish Virtual Trade Corridors that will digitally connect ports, enabling seamless cargo movement and reducing bottlenecks," said the minister.

Policymakers need to be vigilant of evolving global crude price dynamics impact: RBI

New Delhi: While active government intervention has contained spillover to domestic oil prices, policymakers need to be vigilant and cautious of the direct and indirect impact of the evolving global crude price dynamics through continuous assessment, given India's increasing dependence on crude oil imports, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stressed. In this regard, government policies would play a pivotal role in containing the impact, said the RBI in a paper titled 'Revisiting the Oil Price and Inflation Nexus in India' in its latest Bulletin. 'Specifically, reducing crude oil dependence by promoting alternate non-fossil energy usage and regional free trade agreements and bilateral treaties with major oil exporters could be explored for oil imports at favourable prices,' the paper emphasised. In recent years, India's net import demand for crude oil has remained strong, fuelled by consumption growth and robust economic activity. Oil prices and their inflationary impact is a key metric that sensitise monetary policy formulation in economies vulnerable to oil price shocks, particularly net oil importers, where rising oil prices can significantly dampen economic growth and stoke inflation pressures. 'The direct impact of international crude oil price changes to domestic petrol and diesel inflation, and indirectly through transportation and input costs, is evident in the post-deregulation period albeit at a subdued level as government intervention by taxes, cess and regulation of oil marketing companies has often muted the impact,' the RBI paper noted. The results of the empirical analysis suggest that a 10 per cent increase in international crude oil prices could raise India's headline inflation by around 20 basis points on a contemporaneous basis. 'Although the pass-through to retail prices has remained contained with active government intervention, increasing dependence on crude oil imports may have inflationary consequences in the long run, warranting constant vigilance and careful monitoring of its potential impact,' said the RBI paper. Meanwhile, India is taking steady, confident steps towards oil self-sufficiency and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the country is securing its energy future, step by step, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said recently. While 1 million square km offshore area is now open for oilfield exploration, 99 per cent of 'No-Go' areas have been cleared. The oil and gas blocks being offered under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) have already garnered attention from global and domestic energy players, and Round X is expected to set new benchmarks for participation and investment.

India trade deal likely will get shifted to September 2, the due date for decision on Russian oil as well: Ajay Bagga

Market expert Ajay Bagga anticipates trade deals, like those between the UK and Japan, to boost markets. Several Asian countries are pursuing similar agreements, while Korea has engaged with the US. Bagga notes that India might receive an extension on a Russian oil decision, potentially leading to a trade deal with the US. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads , Market Expert, says trade deals are anticipated to boost markets. The UK and Japan deals are inspiring others. Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam already have deals. Malaysia and Thailand are aiming for deals this week. Korea has engaged with the US. A Russian oil decision is expected on September 2. India might get an extension until it is a very pleasant surprise and a very welcome move. We have seen the action happening across Asian markets. Even though Europe opened up, Europe is also in a celebratory mode. Directionally, it is pointing towards more deals coming and hopefully Europe and India both will be able to get a deal done. Overall, 10 days back, it looked a very dismal picture as far as Japan was concerned. In fact, President Trump issued letters to Korea and Japan, levying 25% tariffs on them. Japan went into elections without a deal and if this had happened last week, maybe the Liberals would have got a better outcome in the upper house elections. They lost the majority in the upper house and one of the reasons apart from inflation was this policy uncertainty leading to corporates being very uncertain in terms of fresh investments and consumers being very uncertain about safety of their timing-wise, the Japanese prime minister must be wishing that if the deal had come last week, it would have helped him a lot. Overall, it is pointing towards a more reasonable level of tariff coming onto major trade partners. So, Europe, for example, anything from 30% to 50% Trump has been talking about, but it will settle nearer to 15%. India has also discounted a 15% overall and the way the UK-India FDA has worked out, we might get something like that with the US as well with foreign cars coming in at a very reduced 10%, opening up some of the agricultural produce where we are already importing from the US and also a lot of goods being opened UK deal is giving some ideas. As is the Japan deal. With Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam having cracked deals, Malaysia and Thailand are now looking at cracking deals this week. Korea has sent a delegation to the US. So, hopes are high and it will be a very strong catalyst for our markets. It would not happen by the 1st August deadline and the next two days are critical because the US customs will need about a week to update their computers with the new tariff deal. So, nothing will happen after 25th next 2-3 days are critical. We will get some news flow, some deals happening. India will get one month more and September 2 is the date for the Russian oil decision as well. So, probably India will get shifted to September 2 and when the Americans are here next month, probably we will get some kind of a deal coming on is amazing that institutions and promoters have been lightening their holdings and the Indian retail via the DIIs which have been absorbing all of it. So, quite remarkable. Normally we would be worried when insiders are selling. They obviously are the most well-informed about the health of the companies, but this time around, we have seen promoters selling off nearly Rs 150,000 crore in QIPs, and OFS (offers for sale) coming the good news is there is a lot of liquidity in the market which is absorbing both primary offerings in the market with a lot more IPOs being scheduled for the second half and this promoter selling that we have seen has not had a bad impact on the market. Yes, if it was not there and this Rs 150,000 crore was coming into the secondary market, we would probably have crossed the September all-time highs already. So, it has just been postponed. But the good news is that the impact cost has not been that a week or so, we see some impact on the stocks and then fresh buying starts again. So, it is a function of the elevated valuations where promoters are cashing out some of their chips but there is retail money on the sides which is absorbing all of it.

Knowledge Nugget: RBI's Financial Inclusion Index – A must-know for UPSC aspirants

Take a look at the essential concepts, terms, quotes, or phenomena every day and brush up on your knowledge. Here's your knowledge nugget on the Financial Inclusion Index of the RBI. (Relevance: Questions have been asked in UPSC Prelims and Mains on financial inclusion. RBI, tasked with managing the country's monetary policy, publishes such indices to provide an overview of initiatives taken for financial inclusion. In this regard, this is a must-do topic for your exam.) Financial inclusion across the country improved to 67 in March 2025, up from 64.2 in March 2024, according to the recently released Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). 'Improvement in FI-Index in FY2025 is contributed by usage and quality dimensions, reflecting deepening of financial inclusion, and sustained financial literacy initiatives,' the RBI said in a release. 1. The FI-Index has been conceptualised as a comprehensive index incorporating details of banking, investments, insurance, postal as well as the pension sector in consultation with the government and respective sectoral regulators. 2. A unique feature of the index is the quality parameter which captures the quality aspect of financial inclusion as reflected by financial literacy, consumer protection, and inequalities and deficiencies in services. 3. The index captures information on various aspects of financial inclusion in a single value ranging between 0 and 100, where 0 represents complete financial exclusion and 100 indicates full financial inclusion. 4. The FI-Index comprises of three broad parameters: Access (having a weight of 35 per cent in the index), Usage (weight 45 per cent), and Quality ( weight 20 per cent). The weight of each parameter comprises various dimensions, which are calculated based on a number of indicators. 5. The FI-Index has been constructed without any base year, and as such it reflects cumulative efforts of all stakeholders over the years towards financial inclusion. It is published annually in July every year. 'Financial inclusion has been a key tool used by policymakers and governments globally to reduce inequalities, strengthen livelihoods of people at the bottom of the pyramid, and spur growth,' Soumya Kanti Ghosh wrote in the Indian Express. 📍Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY): It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, with a mission of financial Inclusion to ensure access to financial services, namely, basic savings & deposit accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, pension in an affordable manner. Under the PMJDY, there are no account opening charges, no account maintenance charges, and no minimum balance charges. Free RuPay debit card, with in-built accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh, and access to overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000, are other major features of the scheme. PMJDY accounts are eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency Bank (MUDRA) scheme. 📍Digital India: It was launched on July 1, 2015, by the Union Government with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. It comprises various initiatives under a single programme, each targeted to prepare India for becoming a knowledge economy and for bringing good governance to citizens through synchronised and coordinated engagement of the entire government. Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) App, Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA), Aarogya Setu app, Digital India BHASHINI, and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) are some of the initiatives under the Digital India programme. 📍Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY): It is a one-year life insurance Scheme renewable from year to year. It offers coverage of Rs. Two lacs for death due to any reason and is available to people in the age group of 18 to 50 years having a bank account. 📍Aadhar inclusion: The pillar of financial inclusion is the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) trinity, which has expanded the coverage of direct benefit transfers. Through the implementation of its biometric identification system 'Aadhar', the government has enabled easy accessibility for opening bank accounts, and thus leading to financial inclusion. 📍Atal Pension Yojna: Launched in 2015 by the Government of India, the scheme is particularly targeted at unorganised sector workers, who often lack access to formal pension schemes. APY encourages workers to save voluntarily for their retirement, thereby ensuring a secure financial future. Under APY, the subscribers would receive the fixed minimum pension of Rs. 1000 per month, Rs. 2000 per month, Rs. 3000 per month, Rs. 4000 per month and Rs. 5000 per month at the age of 60 years, depending on their contributions, which itself would be based on the age of joining APY. The age bracket for joining APY is 18 to 40 years. 📍Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY): It is a one-year personal accident insurance Scheme, renewable annually. It provides coverage for death/disability due to an accident and is available to people in the age group of 18 to 70 years, having a bank account and who give their consent to join and enable auto-debit. 1. The Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom, 2025 was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in May 2025. According to the survey, there has been a marked increase in the number of Indians in rural areas who have been engaging in online banking, with the rise being particularly noteworthy among young women. 2. More women in rural areas can conduct online banking transactions, as the proportion of females that could perform them surged to 30.0 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, sharply higher than 17.1 per cent in 2022-23. 3. As per the survey's results, 51.4 per cent of females in rural areas in the 15-24 years age bracket reported the ability to perform online banking transactions, more than double the 19.6 per cent in 2022-23 as per the ministry's Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey for 2022-23 (July-June), released in October 2024. 4. In urban areas, where online banking penetration levels were higher to begin with, the increase was of a smaller magnitude, with 62.4 per cent of respondents aged 15 years and above saying they engaged in online banking, up from 50.6 per cent in 2022-23. 5. The survey, part of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), was conducted in the first three months of 2025 and covered the entire country except for some villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With reference to India, consider the following: (UPSC CSE 2010) 1. Nationalization of Banks 2. Formation of Regional Rural Banks 3.
