Brandin Cooks' record-breaking touchdown catch is the Saints Play of the Day Brandin Cooks, Drew Brees broke a record which had stood since 1967
There's a 98-day stretch between us and the start of the New Orleans Saints' 2025 regular season, and we're counting down the days by looking back on some of the most iconic plays in franchise history. This time, our Saints Play of the Day is the 98-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks back in 2016, which you can watch here.
It was a classic grab-and-go reception by Cooks streaking down the left sideline. Brees dropped back to throw from his own end zone and found Cooks in one-on-one coverage against cornerback Sean Smith. Once Cooks put a step on his opponent, he was gone, and safety Reggie Nelson wasn't able to make up the distance in the open field.
Cooks broke a Saints record that had stood since their inaugural 1967 season on this play, outgaining Walter Roberts' 96-yard catch to achieve the longest play from scrimmage in team history. And he just returned to the Saints this offseason after spending time with the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Dallas Cowboys. They're hoping he can still uncork some big plays downfield like this one.

Marques Colston's game-winning touchdown catch is the Saints Play of Day 36

There are just 36 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off the 2025 regular season. Marques Coltson's 36-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown against the rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers is our Saints Play of the Day. You can watch the touchdown-scoring play for yourself here. Heading into the final week of the 2014 season, New Orleans was playing just for pride. They had a 6-9 record and were facing a 1-14 Buccaneers squad. Things got off to a pretty bad start for the Saints, as they were down 20-7 heading into the final frame. Mark Ingram was able to score a touchdown to make it a one-possession game just a minute into the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter, Keenan Lewis intercepted a Josh McCown pass to set New Orleans up at midfield with about five minutes left. On third down, Drew Brees connected with Colston over the middle of the field. The receiver ran the ball about 20 more yards into the endzone, 36 in total, setting up the eventual game-winning PAT. The Saints would go on to win 23-20 after a safety. Coincidentally, this score and eventual New Orleans victory helped the Buccaneers land the first overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft. They would go on to pick Jameis Winston, who became a fan favorite for the Saints from 2020 to 2023.

Former Saints goalkeeper joins Eastleigh after release this summer

GOALKEEPER Josh McNamara has joined National League side Eastleigh following his release by Saints this summer. McNamara will link up with Saints goalkeeping legend Kelvin Davis at the Silverlake Stadium, having agreed terms with the Spitfires. The 21 year old former Manchester City academy prospect spent two seasons in Southampton's under-21s, and helped them reach the Premier League 2 play-off final. They suffered a 2-0 defeat against his former side in the final, which turned out to be McNamara's final appearance for Saints. Upon the arrival of the shot-stopper, manager Davis said: 'We've had a number of trialists in this position and we're looking for character first and someone that's hungry to improve. READ: Saints defender Davis to be managed by dad Kelvin during Eastleigh loan "Josh comes in with a fantastic pedigree, having come out of a great academy and having ties with Manchester City too. "He's got ability, he's keen, and he's come in and excelled, so we're really pleased to have him on board." McNamara is no stranger to National League football, having spent time on loan at St Albans in the National League South during the 2023/24 season. He will compete for the number one spot with former Newport County and Antigua and Barbuda international Nick Townsend.

Countdown to Kickoff: Rico Payton is the Saints Player of Day 36

Payton looks for more defensive action going into Year 2 The New Orleans Saints are down to a 36-day wait until the opening kickoff of the 2025 regular season. New Orleans will host the Arizona Cardinals to open their season, doing so under new head coach Kellen Moore as they head into their 59th NFL season. Defensive back Rico Payton wears No. 36 for the team at the moment. He's also our Saints Player of the Day, bearing a better look at his background and career. An all-state performer at Lindberg High School in Missouri, Payton would commit to Southern Illinois University. After redshirting in 2018, he'd transfer to Division II FCS Pittsburg State in Kansas the following year. With each passing year for the Gorillas, Payton became a bigger defensive factor. He was a full-time starter by 2022, finishing as a 2nd Team All-Mid-America Athletics Association selection. He was 1st Team all-conference and 2nd Team Division II All-American in 2023, a year that saw him with 4 interceptions and 16 passes broken up. Despite not being selected in the 2024 NFL draft, Payton impressed during the preseason and would make the Saints 53-man roster. He'd appear in 16 contests as a rookie, though only playing a total of 21 defensive snaps. Most of Payton's activity was on special teams, where he covered kicks and punts extremely effectively. Heading into 2025, Payton is firmly in the mix for more snaps at corner. The Saints lost corners Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Shemar Jean-Charles off last year's squad. Rico Payton will be in competition with fourth round rookie Quincy Riley, seven-year veteran journeyman Isaac Yiadom, and fellow undrafted corners Rezjohn Wright and Dalys Beanum for cornerback spots behind Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor.
