King Charles and Queen Camilla to Meet Pope Francis on Historic Trip to Italy

Yahoo06-02-2025
When King Charles completed his tour of Australia and Samoa last year, a royal source said that they were looking towards a normal schedule of overseas visits in 2025. And today, the King and Queen's first State Visits of the year are announced, with the Palace saying they will travel to Italy and the Holy See where they will meet Pope Francis.
'Their Majesties The King and Queen will undertake State Visits to the Holy See and the Republic of Italy in early April 2025,' Buckingham Palace said in a statement. 'During Their Majesties' State visit to the Holy See, The King and Queen will join His Holiness Pope Francis in celebrating the 2025 Jubilee Year. Traditionally held once every 25 years, the Jubilee is a special year for the Catholic Church; a year of walking together as 'Pilgrims of Hope'. During Their Majesties' State Visit to the Republic of Italy, The King and Queen will undertake engagements in Rome and Ravenna, celebrating the strong bilateral relationship between Italy and the United Kingdom.'
There are currently no specific dates or further details of the program available. The Palace said they will be announced in due course.
This is the King's first visit to Italy and to the Vatican City as monarch. However, he traveled to Italy 17 times and the Holy See 5 times as Prince Charles. Previous trips to Italy include a visit with Princess Diana in 1985 where the couple took a gondola along the Grand Canal in Venice. Charles and Camilla last visited Italy together in 2017 when they spent six days traveling across Rome, Florence, Naples and the Vatican City.
Ahead of April's tour, the King and Queen will join guests including Italian-American actor Stanley Tucci and Italy's Ambassador to the UK Inigo Lambertini for a UK-Italy dinner at Highgrove. The Palace said that the dinner, which will take place Friday, will be a celebration of slow food and slow fashion.
'The menu for the evening has been created by world-renowned Chef, Francesco Mazzei and inspired by Italian-American actor Stanley Tucci, host of Tucci - The Heart of Italy.' Buckingham Palace said in a statement. 'Created using entirely British ingredients blended with Italian culinary traditions and local flavours, the menu aims to fully embody the principles of Slow Food. Drinks for the evening will be created by internationally recognised Italian mixologist, Mr Alessandro Palazzi using Italian flavours and herbs foraged from Highgrove Gardens.'
Ahead of the dinner, students from the King's Foundation training programs will demonstrate their work in traditional crafts.

David White named NFLPA's interim executive director

The NFL Players Association named David White, the former head of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, as its new interim executive director, the union announced Sunday night. The announcement comes after Lloyd Howell Jr. stepped down on July 17 following controversies surrounding his leadership. Advertisement 'David has spent much of his career fighting for collectively bargained rights in the labor movement and is committed to putting players first in all the union does,' NFLPA president Jalen Reeves-Maybin wrote in a statement Sunday. 'We are confident that he will inspire solidarity and provide the necessary stability during this period of transition.' Reeves-Maybin said that the NFLPA plans to soon begin a search process for a permanent executive director. A high-ranking executive in the NFL offices told The Athletic last month that the league did not anticipate that whoever was named the interim executive director would be promoted to the full-time role. John Cena & Cody Rhodes Slyly Pay Tribute To Hulk Hogan On WWE SmackDown

John Cena seemingly turned babyface again last night on WWE SmackDown and slyly paid tribute to Hulk Hogan in the process. Last night's episode of SmackDown kicked off with a face-to-face promo between Cody Rhodes and John Cena. In a surprising turn of events, Cena seemingly turned babyface ahead of his street fight with Rhodes this Sunday at SummerSlam. The American Nightmare was pleased with Cena's speech and decided to propose a toast to the 17-time World Champion, offering him a beer and a handshake. The beer in question? A can of Hulk Hogan's Real American Beer. While it's evidently clear after three straight episodes of WWE programming honoring the two-time Hall of Famer, the company has moved on from front and center tributes to the Hulkster; this was clearly a tribute from Cena and Rhodes without blatantly saying it. If you missed last night's segment, you can check it out in the embedded video below: Cody Rhodes will challenge John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship on night two of SummerSlam in a street fight. WrestleZone will have live coverage of WWE SummerSlam all weekend long. READ MORE: John Cena Turns Babyface On WWE SmackDown What do you make of Rhodes and Cena's Hulk Hogan tribute? Meryl Streep Accidentally Recreates Met Gala Meme While Filming 'Devil Wears Prada 2'

It looks like Meryl Streep accidentally stumbled her way into recreating a Met Gala-inspired meme while filming 'The Devil Wears Prada' sequel in New York on Friday. During a scene, the Oscar-winner was photographed falling on the steps of New York's Natural History Museum in what looked to be a real-life stand-in for Vogue's highly exclusive annual benefit. In the snaps, a red gown-clad Streep was bowled over in laughter while co-star Stanley Tucci looked on, flanked by extras in couture. The spill appeared to be unscripted, since no similar shots were caught in rehearsal photos from earlier in the day. While Streep's slip looked to be an on-set accident, the moment bears a striking resemblance to a long-running internet joke that pops up every Met season. Each May, social media resurrects a viral photo of a man in a white suit tumbling down a red carpet staircase, falsely claiming it shows Jason Derulo taking a spill at the 2015 gala. Despite the meme's perennial popularity, and endless jokes about Derulo's alleged clumsiness, the photo isn't of him at all. In fact, Derulo wasn't even at the Met Gala that year (or any year, for that matter.) Back when the bit was born in 2015, internet sleuths at HuffPost tracked down the image's true origin: a misstep during the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. And the mystery man in white? Still unknown. The highly-anticipated 'Devil Wears Prada 2' will see Streep return as eternally aloof magazine queen Miranda Priestly, a character which has long been believed to be a stand-in for Vogue's former editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Anne Hathaway will reprise her original role, now playing a chicer, older and wiser version of journalist Andy Sachs. Related...
