Call to curb drug abuse
Eluru: District collector K Vetriselvi highlighted the collective responsibility to combat drug use during a 5K walkathon organised under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. The event took place on Sunday, starting from Sir CRR Mahila College to the indoor stadium, and was attended by over 600 participants, including officials, public representatives, students, and sportsmen.
A drug control pledge programme was also held, where collector Vetriselvi and MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar signed a board advocating for a tobacco-free society. Vetriselvi noted that the central government is taking steps to eradicate drug use and trafficking. She urged the public to report drug-related information to the toll-free numbers 1972 and 14446.
De-addiction centres are being established to support those affected. She expressed concern over youth addiction to substances like marijuana and called for awareness programs in schools and colleges to prevent drug abuse. In preparation for the International Day Against Drug Abuse on June 26, she proposed a campaign from June 1 to June 26 to educate the public about the dangers of drugs.
She emphasised the need for strict measures against drug trafficking and stressed that public involvement is essential for creating a drug-free district.
The collector presented medals to 5 men and 5 women who performed most brilliantly in the walkathon programme.
Additional SP Nakka Suryachandra Rao, who participated in the programme, was presented with a medal by the Collector. Along with this, in the men's category, M Ch Raju, S Bhargav, D Narendra Babu, D Srinivasu, GSK Dhanaraju of the Excise Department were presented with medals. In the women's category, students of KPDT School G Bhavya Varshini, Ch Lavanya, M Jahnavi Priya of St Teresa's, and officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department Ch Suryacharkaveni, V Mallika were presented with medals by the Collector.

"Drug mafias are roaming freely": BJP's Tarun Chugh slams AAP over drug problem in Punjab
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that drug mafias are operating freely in the state while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with the hospitality of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. While speaking to ANI, Tarun Chugh said, 'AAP's governance is primarily for headlines, not for public interest. He further alleged that the governance failure in Punjab over the last several years has allowed crime and drug-related activities to flourish. 'AAP and Congress have been in power in Punjab for the last 8.5 years... The state has been thrown into the fire of crime and anarchy,' he added. Reiterating the BJP's position on the issue, Chugh added, 'BJP stands strong against drug dealers. No dealer should be spared.' His remarks come amid the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 2. Meanwhile, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, asserted that the Punjab government is tackling the drug menace at its root. In a post on X, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Kejriwal wrote, 'Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. In Punjab, the AAP government is not just talking - we are taking strong action to make the state drug-free. We're fighting the problem at its root to protect our youth and their future. Let's salute every honest officer, volunteer, and citizen who stands with us in this real battle.' Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also emphasised that their war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement. 'The campaign we launched from Punjab to eradicate drugs, 'War Against Drugs', has now transformed into a mass movement. Those who ruin families and use the ill-got gains of this sin to build palaces and host lavish parties will not be spared,' CM Mann said while speaking to the media. 'We have improved law and order in Punjab and provided people with a safe environment. By taking the strictest action against drug traffickers, we have forced them to flee Punjab,' he said. (ANI)

Anti-Addiction Awareness Meet Held In Besa Under Operation Thunder
1 2 3 Nagpur: Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse (June 26), the Nagpur city police commissionerate organised an anti-addiction awareness programme under the ongoing 'Operation Thunder' initiative. The event was spearheaded by Mukesh Kale, member of the peace committee, with the objective of sensitising citizens — especially the youth — about the alarming rise in substance abuse. Key dignitaries present were retired DGP Bhushankumar Upadhyay, ACP Narendra Hivare, PI Mukund Kawade, Bharat Nandanwar (administrator, Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat), and senior psychiatrist Dr Mosam Phirke. The speakers delivered powerful messages highlighting the grave dangers of drug and alcohol addiction on individual health, families, and society at large. Citizens were urged to stay vigilant and report any illegal activities related to the sale and distribution of narcotics and alcohol. The event concluded with a collective anti-addiction pledge followed by the national anthem. The awareness meet, held at Shubharambh Hall, Besa Road, witnessed the participation of around 650-700 people, including police officials and the police band, reflecting strong community involvement in the fight against addiction.
