Rugby player 'half an inch' from death after being stabbed 10 times on night out

A rugby player narrowly escaped death after being stabbed 10 times during a night out with his girlfriend. Morgan Hopkins, a 19 year old from Swansea, is currently in hospital recuperating from a gruelling 10.5-hour operation following the horrific incident.
Known as "Hoppy" among his friends and Morriston RFC teammates, Morgan was assaulted while waiting for a taxi after a night out in Gorseinon on Saturday with his girlfriend.
His family revealed that he was stabbed approximately 10 times, with one of the wounds perilously close to causing fatal bleeding, according to his surgeon's estimation.
The attack has left Morgan with serious, life-altering injuries. He underwent extensive surgery where doctors had to remove part of his bowel and stitch his tendons back together.
Victoria Owens Hopkins, Morgan's mother, referred to June 22 as "the worst day of [her] life.", reports Wales Online.
She said: "In the early hours of Sunday morning my son and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench waiting for a lift home when Morgan was attacked with a knife.
"He was stabbed 10 times. At first we thought they were superficial so we were all very relaxed.
"But that turned into 10.5 hours of Morgan having major surgery, where he had part of his bowel removed. He has had to have nerves and tendons sewn back in his arms."
Doctors told Morgan's family that if one of his wounds was half and inch in the other direction, Morgan would have bled to death.
Victoria said: "Half an inch saved his life. So in all this we consider ourselves very lucky."
The family have confirmed that Morgan's surgeon said it will be a week before they know if the operation was successful, though Morgan has now been moved from intensive care and is in a stable condition.
South Wales Police arrested and charged a 20-year-old man for attempted murder and being in possession of a bladed article following the alleged attack. Officers are now appealing for witnesses.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "An investigation is ongoing in relation to a serious assault which occurred during the early hours of the morning on Sunday June 22, 2025, at The New Lodge Social Club, Alexandra Road, Gorseinon.
"The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition.
"Twenty-year-old Kane Evans from Gorseinon has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
Morgan's rugby team, Morriston RFC, have set up a fundraiser to help cover medical costs, so that he can access private rehabilitation services upon his release from hospital, and not worry about returning to work.
A spokesperson for the rugby club said: "Not only does Morgan have physical wounds from this attack, but he will suffer from psychological trauma for years to come.
"The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to raise money for Morgan as he's going to be out of work for some time.
"We'd also like to raise some money for Morgan to be able to have some private sessions for physical and mental rehabilitation should he wish to have this.
"Our thoughts go out to Morgan and his family during this difficult time and wish him a speedy recovery. See you on the rugby pitch again soon Hoppy."
The club's fundraiser for Morgan has raised over £3,000 in less than 24 hours. To donate you can click here, or visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/raise-funds-for-morgan-hoppy-hopkins.
South Wales Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the force quoting reference 2500197011.

Edinburgh walk in honour of young woman murdered by evil boyfriend

More info A young woman who was murdered by her boyfriend will be honoured in Edinburgh by her loved ones. Phoenix Spencer-Horn's family have raised thousands of pounds for a domestic abuse charity to commemorate her. They plan on continuing her "legacy of love" by supporting Glasgow Women's Aid at the Kiltwalk in September. The 21-year-old was brutally killed by Ewan Methven at their home in East Kilbride last November, and he was described in court as the 'personification of evil. Methven dialled 999 after his heinous crimes, insisting he had a 'drug-induced blackout' and didn't remember what he'd done, reports Lanarkshire Live. However, it emerged that after stabbing Phoenix, he decapitated and mutilated her body and pretended to her mother she was still alive. She had suffered a total of 20 stab wounds - the fatal one to the chest. The 27-year-old postman admitted to the gruesome murder when he appeared in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, June 17. He faces a life sentence when he is back in court on July 14. In the days following her tragic death, a fundraiser was set up to help with funeral costs, with everything left over donated to Women's Aid. The fundraiser netted £6465 and the charity have thanked Phoenix's family and those who donated for their support. 'Phe's Angel Fighters' GoFundMe page has now been set up for the Kiltwalk fundraiser and has already raised more than £4000. Organiser Jen Strachan said: "Our darling Phoenix was only 21 when she was taken from us, leaving the biggest hole in our hearts. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox "Phe was the most high spirited, cheerful daughter and friend with the best sense of humour - always looking out for other people and putting others first. Her name, Phoenix, now stands for more than loss. It stands for action. For change. For refusing to let her story end in silence. This is what it means to rise from the ashes - to take devastation and use it to protect others. "On the 14th September, a number of us will be walking 20 miles in support of Glasgow Women's Aid but most importantly, to remember our beautiful friend, Phoenix. Phe's legacy will live on forever, her name will never be forgotten and she will always be the girl with the stunning smile. We love you Phe." Highlighting the fundraiser on their Facebook page, Glasgow Women's Aid described Phoenix as a "high-spirited, funny, fiercely caring young woman who always put others first" and thanked her family for helping to prevent the loss of more young women to male violence. The charity said: "Phoenix was only 21 when she was taken from her family and friends. Her loss left an enormous hole in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. "Her family and friends continue to show amazing courage and extraordinary strength by using Phe's story to raise awareness and funds to help prevent any other family experiencing pain like theirs. This September, Phe's friends will be walking 20 miles in her name and in doing so have chosen to raise money for Glasgow Women's Aid. "We cannot express our gratitude enough for this. The money raised will help us to continue to help women and girls in abusive relationships and prevent the loss of other young women to male violence. Phe leaves a legacy of love. It is clear from the support we have had from her friends and family and the public. It is clear from the willingness of her friends and family to give in Phoenix's name. "By walking in her name, Phoenix's friends are helping to raise vital funds for women and children experiencing domestic abuse - and reminding us all what it means to rise from the ashes." Roasted Cafe in Strathaven, where Phoenix worked, posted: "Last year we lost a friend, a colleague, a daughter and a presence. With this in mind there is a group of Phe's family, friends and colleagues doing the Kiltwalk in September. "We are all raising awareness for her loss and others in need. If you can help make a difference and keep Phe's spirit alive then get behind the cause." You can make a donation to the Kiltwalk fundraiser for Phoenix here.

Dad unable to speak after Thailand holiday 'assault' and bleed on brain

Speaking for Ashton Jones' family, Angela Roden Shepherd said the dad is slowly regaining his ability to speak at a hospital in Bangkok, but added he isn't yet coherent A British dad has been left unable to speak after Thailand holiday 'assault' and bleed on brain. Speaking for Ashton Jones' family, Angela Roden Shepherd said the dad is slowly regaining his ability to speak at a hospital in Bangkok, but added he isn't yet coherent ‌ The dad has been left hooked up to a machine and fighting for his life after he was allegedly beaten "half to death" and left with a brain bleed. Ashton Jones, 29, had part of his skull removed in emergency surgery following an alleged assault during a holiday with friends in Thailand that left him unable to talk nearly a month later. ‌ The dad, from Cwmbran, Wales, had flown out to Bangkok with his group on May 30, but disappeared during a night out in the early hours of June 3. His shocked pals had no idea what had happened until he turned up at Chonburi Hospital, where doctors had placed him on life support. Ashton's friends say he had made a "miraculous recovery" as he remains in hospital care after the incident, but while he is now talking, he is not completely coherent. Speaking to WalesOnline on behalf of Ashton's family, Angela Roden Shepherd said he is "making very steady progress" with the family set to move him to rehabilitation following his "miraculous improvement" after his dad, Darren, refused a "do not resuscitate" order. She said: 'He's making very steady progress. "The next move is to get him back into the rehabilitation place he originally was in before he got a lung infection. To put into context just how miraculous a recovery Ashton has made so far, Darren was actually asked if he wanted to put a do not resuscitate order on Ashton just a week ago. "Darren said 'absolutely not' and in a few days Ashton had made a miraculous improvement. I spoke to Ashton a couple of days ago. He's talking. He's not coherent but he's able to communicate. He's off the ventilator. "He still has to be tube fed and he still has oxygen fed to him, and he still has to be restrained because he's in a lot of pain." Ashton's family aim to return the dad to Wales in a few weeks, where he will receive further treatment at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, including an operation to replace a lost part of his skull with the titanium plate. ‌ Angela added that the family, with the help of a British man and Thai woman who are putting up Ashton's father, have also spoken with police in Thailand, who they claim believe Ashton was assaulted. She said he was "beaten half to death", but added that the family has refrained from speculation as the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain unconfirmed. She said: "We don't know the circumstances around how and why, so we're not going to speculate. 'Ashton is starting to mumble things but it's too incoherent. The chances of catching them are virtually zero and the chances of getting money back to get Ashton home are virtually zero too.' ‌ Ashton travelled to Thailand without medical insurance, and his family is attempting to pay for the costs with a GoFundMe appeal, which has so far raised more than £22,000. Angela said: "We really need all the help we can get. We're still short of the funds we need to get Ashton back. Any help at all is greatly appreciated."

Dangerous stalker back behind bars after Instagram post

Dangerous stalker back behind bars after Instagram post Stalker Neal Hancock has made his victims' lives "hell" Neal Hancock (Image: South Wales Police ) A "dangerous" stalker is back behind bars after trying to contact one of his victims on social media. Last year Neal Hancock was jailed for breaching a restraining order following a lengthy and sinister campaign of harassment against three people. Now Hancock is back in prison after breaching the restraining order again, this time by approaching one of his victims on Instagram something he is prohibited from doing. ‌ In an interview with Walesonline last year, Hancock's victims bravely spoke out to detail the devastating impact his behaviour was having on their lives. ‌ Bethan Simms from Port Talbot described how the defendant would constantly bombard her with messages on Facebook, creating new accounts every time she blocked him. Hancock then began stalking her in person as well as online, and also started stalking Bethan's mother Kathryn. The defendant would message the women detailing exactly where they were and what they were doing when they were out and about, and he told Bethan that he knew she had children and he described them to her in detail. Article continues below The stalking of Bethan went on for more than four years and became so bad she felt scared to leave her house and she had to tell her children's school and show them pictures from social media of what her stalker looked like in the hope that staff would recognise him if he was seen near the school. It then emerged the daughter and mother were not Hancock's only victims when a mutual friend introduced them to Carl Mallon, someone who had known of the defendant in their teenage years. In Carl's case what began as homophobic abuse and name-calling turned into stalking which continued for a much longer period than it did for Bethan. It crippled Carl to the point he left his job and moved house. You can read our interview with the victims here - "Our stalker has made our life hell for years" Article continues below Neal Hancock, aged 39, previously of Lingfield Avenue, Port Talbot, but now of Ambassador Hotel, The Parade, Neath, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order by sending a message to Bethan Simms on Instagram when he appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court. The defendant was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison. Speaking after the sentencing South Wales Police inspector Jared Easton said: "Neal Hancock is clearly a dangerous individual who refuses to learn his lesson and has caused all manner of trauma for his poor victim. His behaviour towards this victim has been ongoing for several years now. It is completely unacceptable, and nobody should have to put up with a prolonged campaign like this."
