Exotic animal smuggler arrested
The 39-year-old suspect, a local who was travelling to India, was arrested at 9.30pm on Monday after Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency officers conducted a routine baggage check and found nine wild animals.
'Among the animals seized were four siamangs, four sugar gliders and one macaque.
'The animals are protected species and believed to be smuggled for illegal international trade,' the agency said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008 (Act 686).

KUANTAN: A police corporal sustained injuries after being attacked with a machete by a man suspected to be mentally unstable at a residence in Felda Bukit Kuantan. Police apprehended the 37-year-old unemployed suspect, who is believed to have mental health issues, and confiscated multiple sharp weapons from the scene. 'The suspect has been referred to the psychiatric ward for further evaluation,' Yahaya added. Investigations revealed the suspect has no prior criminal record. 36 Malaysians, including 8 women, held in Thai prison
NARATHIWAT: There are currently 36 Malaysians, including eight women, currently in Narathiwat Prison after five Malaysian men were sent there early this year. Narathiwat Prison director, Surin Chantep said they were all linked to drug related offences, some still awaiting trial, while others have been convicted and were all currently in good condition and carrying out their sentences without any incident. 'Most of them are healthy mentally and physically. Prison authorities ensure they are free from dangerous diseases. If there are any with such conditions, they would be sent to hospitals with treatment facilities,' he told Bernama recently. 2 Bangladeshi cyclists killed in hit-and-run
MUAR: Two Bangladeshi cyclists were killed and a fellow country man seriously injured after a hit-and-run in Parit Salam, Parit Yusof, here last night. The 8.45pm crash occurred when the three Bangladeshi men, all aged 21, were cycling against traffic from Parit Yusof towards Bukit Mor before an unidentified vehicle heading in the opposite direction crashed into them. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said initial investigations revealed the vehicle hit the trio, flinging them onto the left shoulder of the road. One cyclist died on the spot, while another succumbed to his injuries while he sought treatment at the Muar hospital's red zone. The third victim suffered fractures to his right wrist and shoulder and is treated in the hospital's yellow zone. As per press time, the driver is yet to lodge a report. "Investigations are underway to identify the driver, and vehicle involved to facilitate investigations for reckless driving causing deaths," he said in a statement today. If convicted, the offender faces up to 10 years' jail and a RM50,000 fine. Raiz urged witnesses to come forward and assist the investigation. Those who witnessed the accident are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector Khairun Izham Noor Yusry at 013-9121508.
