EXCLUSIVE Here's how much cheaper it is to service an EV compared to a petrol, diesel or hybrid car over five years

Electric cars might come with premium prices tags over their petrol, diesel and hybrid equivalents, but cheaper running costs make them particularly appealing to drivers who finance and lease their vehicles rather than buying with cash.
Not only are they cheaper to charge than refuelling an internal combustion engine (ICE) alternative, they're also far less expensive to maintain due to having fewer moving parts and longer service intervals.
And a new report has exposed just how much motorists can save on servicing over a five-year period if they switch to an EV today.
Based on analysis of hundreds of different cars, analysis suggests electric vehicle drivers pay 29 per cent less for servicing over a five-year period.
While the average outlay for a petrol, diesel or hybrid model is £5,709, EV owners pay just £4,022, according to calculations by The Car Expert that have been shared exclusively with This is Money.
'While overall servicing costs have risen slightly across the market, the long-term maintenance savings with EVs remain compelling,' explains Stuart Masson, the editorial director at the consumer advice platform.
The figures are based on data supplied by automotive analytics provider Clear Vehicle Data, covering more than 600 new and near-new cars currently on sale in the UK.
Drawing on official manufacturer servicing schedules, the analysis includes every version of each model – from body styles and trim levels to gearbox and powertrain options – with millions of data points.
While servicing costs have increased across the board over the last 12 months due to inflation, rising energy bills and supply chain issues causing delays accessing parts, the data confirms that EVs remain 'significantly cheaper' to maintain than their petrol, diesel or hybrid counterparts.
While there are many factors that may contribute to this, one likely explanation is the relative simplicity of EV drivetrains.
With fewer moving parts, no oil changes, and a lower number of components that require regular servicing, this reduces the maintenance costs of EVs (though actual costs will still vary by model, usage and manufacturer servicing schedules).
EVs also typically have longer mileage intervals.
While ICE models usually require a service every year or every 12,000 miles - whichever comes first - some EVs only need a service once they reach 18,000 miles. That said, all manufacturer recommended intervals are yearly.
The findings reinforce the notion that electric cars make financial sense long after they leave the forecourt.
'Servicing costs may not be front of mind when choosing a car, but they play a major role in what you'll spend over time, and it's vital that drivers factor that into their decision-making,' Masson added.
While EVs might be cheaper to service, there is currently a shortfall of qualified technicians to work on them.
The Institute of Motor Industry's latest EV TechSafe certification data published in August showed that 58,800 mechanics in the UK are qualified to work on EVs, which represents less than a quarter (24 per cent) of Britain's automotive workforce.
Based on the forecast increase in EVs on UK roads, the IMI is currently predicting a shortfall of 3,000 technicians by 2031. And the gap is expected to reach 16,000 by 2035.
The new IMI data also identified a worrying postcode lottery for EV technician availability.
While London and the South East have the higher proportion of EVs, the regions do not boast the larger proportion of EV-qualified mechanics.
Just 6.1 per cent and 6.4 per cent of professionals in London and the South East respectively are EV-trained.
The body's data shows the East of England has the highest rate of EV qualifications (9.5 per cent), while Northern Ireland has the lowest (3.7 per cent).
Kevin Finn, executive chair at the IMI said: 'Automotive businesses urgently need to prioritise training more technicians so that the expected rising number of EV owners can find a local technician qualified to work safely on their vehicle.'
EV vs ICE servicing costs
In the most detailed part of the analysis, EVs were found to be cheaper to service in 95 per cent (53 out of 56) like-for-like model comparisons – often by hundreds of pounds per year.
The differences become even clearer when looking at specific model comparisons.
Examples include the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, which is 31 per cent cheaper to service over the first three years than the petrol model – and 32 per cent cheaper from years three to five.
The Fiat 500e saves drivers even more, with service costs 34 per cent lower than the hybrid version in early ownership and 31 per cent lower in later years.
The new all-electric Mini Countryman also delivers strong savings, with maintenance costs reduced by 18 per cent in the first three years, rising to 22 per cent from years three to five when compared to the conventional petrol option.

For fleet managers and higher-mileage drivers, the long-term savings of running an EV will be particularly appealing.
Tim Hudson, managing director at Clear Vehicle Data, said: 'Our data shows a clear trend: electric vehicles consistently cost less to maintain, and that gap remains significant in 2025.
'With more EV options available than ever before, the case for switching is stronger – particularly when you consider the measurable impact on running costs for both fleet operators and private buyers.
'As electric models expand across every vehicle segment, it's becoming easier for drivers to choose options that offer real, long-term value.'

LISBON, July 18 (Reuters) - The Portuguese government will decide next week whether to replace or reappoint Bank of Portugal Governor Mario Centeno, whose five-year term ends on Saturday, Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said on Friday. Centeno has been the target of frequent criticism from the political right, now in power, for moving from his role as finance minister in a previous Socialist administration to the central bank in 2020, a move detractors said undermined the institution's independence. Miranda Sarmento has previously said the cabinet would consider whether to reappoint Centeno, who has been a vocal so-called "dove" favouring looser monetary policy at the European Central Bank, or replace him towards the end of his term. Friday's cabinet meeting ended without a decision, however. The minister gave no further comment on the likelihood of Centeno being replaced after months of speculation that centre-right Prime Minister Luis Montenegro was looking for a new central bank chief, despite Centeno's strong European credentials at the ECB and as Eurogroup president in 2018-2020. The central bank declined to comment. Centeno has previously said he is ready to continue leading the institution. Central bank governors are proposed by the finance minister and nominated by the cabinet for a five-year term and can be reappointed once. The nominee must submit to questioning by a parliamentary committee - which has no power to block the nomination - before the government can officially appoint him or her. Portugal's parliament began its summer recess until September on Thursday, although committees can still hold hearings through next Friday. It is not uncommon for heads of regulatory bodies in Portugal to remain in office months after their terms expire. Filipe Garcia, head of Informacao de Mercados Financeiros consultants, said the fact that the government had not denied speculation that Montenegro sought to replace Centeno suggested that his days at the helm of the central bank were numbered. Several names of potential successors have circulated in Portuguese media recently, including the Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Joao Cabral dos Santos, and former CEO of Portugal's Novo Banco, Antonio Ramalho.

Amazing what a towering rear wing, a good colour and proper stance will do to an old Mercedes 190e. Restomod is the word you've been thinking, but you need to unthink it. In the meantime yes, those are some of the best arches since the Romans built the Colosseum. But this is a restored and modified 190e Evo II isn't it? Obviously it's riffing on that 1990 DTM homologation special, but none of the 502 that were built originally has been sacrificed in the name of creating this. Instead it starts life as a sacrificial 190e, and that's fine seeing as Merc built some 2,000,000 of those. Advertisement - Page continues below Now, we did do a deep dive on this project last year, and made a full walkaround film, so if you want proper nitty gritty details check that out. I'm going to skate over some of that to focus on what it's like to drive this prototype. The only prototype I'm guessing? I can't imagine HWA has the funds to build more than that. You're under-estimating HWA's engineering capacity. I know I said I wasn't going to repeat myself, but here's a quick recap: HWA is named after Hans-Werner Aufrecht (who, in a previous life, was also the 'A' in AMG). In partnership with Mercedes it has been one of the most successful race teams across DTM, GT3, even Formula E. And it's where hypercar firms come when they need a hand: HWA did the nat asp V12 for the Pagani Huayra R, engineered the stillborn Fittipaldi EF7, and is currently working on the De Tomaso P72. The correct interpretation of all this is that HWA does things properly. So not one single prototype, but eight. The last two will be crash tested, four, five and six will do all sorts of dynamic development. But the first three are with Bosch for electronic development. And this green car is, as a sticker under the bonnet proclaims, prototype number 1. Advertisement - Page continues below It's a different story underneath. The cabin is a sprawl of wires, gauges, red buttons, cables and instrumentation, every surface wears temperature strips, there's giant race seats, a non-standard roll cage and the boot is full of electronic boxes. We're at Boxberg, Bosch's top secret test track about an hour north of Stuttgart. It's a corking facility with a banked outer circuit wrapped around a litter of other surfaces, inclines, trails and tracks. Before I can drive I have to wait for everything else to finish for the day. There's all sorts here, but an intimidating piece of paperwork I've signed insists I can't tell you what. Pity. So come on then, what's it like? It shows huge promise. The engine is a modified version of Merc's M276 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 that's found in lesser AMGs such as the SLC 43. I've never been blown away by it, but here it's been uncorked with new turbos, induction and exhaust. It sounds fabulously raspy, yet revs unbelievably smoothly. Barely a vibration to be felt. Too smooth, too linear in its delivery, reckons HWA. At the next stage of development the intention is to make the turbos less linear, to introduce a bit more lag, more turbo-ness. It's not intended to be a modern car, so they don't want it to feel like one. I'm limited to 5,000rpm, which is about the point the V6 starts to get interesting and the engine note hardens. So I don't have the full ticket of power – which will now be upwards of 500bhp. 450bhp was the original plan, but there's been some mission creep and where once the intention was to leave the internals alone, now HWA is tinkering with conrods and pistons. It's not especially fast right now, but ultimately should have a power to weight ratio of over 370bhp/tonne, which is about bang on with the 656bhp bruiser that is the current Aston Martin Vantage. So it's light then? Just 1,350kg is the plan – the same as the original Evo II. That was steel bodied, this is full carbon. The front and rear subframes are entirely new to improve stiffness and crash protection. The bodyshell feels very rigid, giving the suspension a strong central platform to work from. There's a bit of bodyroll, but it's comforting and true to its heritage, and as you push through that the car takes up an edge through corners, working both axles equally. It really does feel like you're sat centrally in the wheelbase with the car pivoting around you – probably a legacy of the front wheels being pushed forward 50mm. It's got a manual gearbox, hasn't it? Yeah, but like the rest of the controls, it hasn't been polished at all yet. Everything you operate is too light. A lot of this is purposeful to lower the effort levels the development drivers have to put in when they are spending hours and hours at the wheel each day. So the gearlever flicks lightly about the gate. It's a short, accurate throw, but needs more meat and weight to suit the car. Same goes for the steering and brakes. Especially the brakes, which currently have zero feel and not much more than zero power. Until your foot is near the bulkhead at which point they bite hard. But this is a development car, and all of this is to be expected. To be honest, I'm only amazed by how composed it is considering this is the very first. HWA's Chief Technology Officer, Gordian von Schoning reckons cars four, five and six, which are in build now, are a huge leap forward. Car nine, after the two crash test cars, will be the first production intent car. What cars does it put you in mind of? Before I drove it I assumed there would be AMG overtones, but this is not a muscle saloon like a C63, it's more finessed and nuanced than that. There's already a Porsche-like precision to the way it moves, which I suspect is largely due to the fact it's relatively compact, doesn't weigh much and comes from a similar motorsport mentality. This is not a muscle saloon like a C63, it's more finessed and nuanced than that I tell you what, on these initial impressions it drives exactly like you hope a recreated version of the Evo II would drive. With crispness, authority, accuracy and enough charisma to see which way AMG would end up taking its hot road cars. Before they decided the best approach was a hybridised four cylinder. I think I'd have an original Evo II. I completely understand that. It's a legend, but first you need to know two things: it's not very fast and it's a lot of money. The engine is a nat asp 2.5-litre four cylinder with about 230bhp (probably less these days) so 0-60mph takes around seven seconds. Which is going to feel anaemic in 2025. And because they only made 502 (the original intention was 500, all painted the same Blauschwarz metallic, but then Merc built two extra silver cars because they could), a good one nowadays is around £350,000. As I said, being a legend back then means it's an investment now. I haven't driven one, but having had a good nose around it, the new one floats my boat in a way the original doesn't quite. How long will development take? First customer deliveries are planned for early next year, which means Bosch's development schedule is tight and HWA is going to have a very hectic next 12 months. But then they're a race team, they're used to tight deadlines. And once this is done, they get to take it racing anyway. But that's another story. 17 minutes 16 seconds

The car even parks itself thanks to the standard-fit Audi Park Assist with Parking System Plus. In this case, Sport trim is matched to a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. With 148bhp, it's both punchy and nicely refined, while the six-speed manual gearbox is a pleasure to use. There's a plush ride, and the whole car feels very relaxing to drive. Just like all of its predecessors, the latest A3 has an upmarket-feeling interior. It's roomy upfront while backseat passengers won't have anything to moan about; there are no criticisms with the boot, either, thanks to its 420-litre capacity which is five litres up on the Mercedes A-Class Saloon's.
