Johnstone Burgh given green light for stadium renovation after Junior Cup joy
Major plans to renovate Johnstone Burgh's Keanie Park ground have been given the green light.
The application by the Scottish Junior Cup winners, which was approved by Renfrewshire Council's planning department, outlines how the club want to replace the four floodlight columns, rip up the grass pitch in favour of a fourth-generation astroturf surface and have an all-seater stand.
There will also be engineering works, portable toilet blocks and outdoor landscaping.
Chairman Brian Williams believes that, while it is sad to be losing the grass park, the positives of having an artificial field outweigh the negatives.
He told the Paisley Daily Express: 'It's kind of twofold because obviously it helps the club in a massive way as it allows us to have a surface which is more reliable all year round.
'Ideally, football should be played on grass, but we live in Scotland and it rains constantly. So, to maintain a grass park during that is quite hard to do.
'But second, and probably the main reason why we're changing the pitch surface, is because obviously it's a community club for the kids.
'The lack of facilities in Johnstone probably shows up at the moment. We have to do it ourselves and bring the kids indoors and basically make the club a full community club.'
In the papers submitted to the council's planning department by the West of Scotland League Premier Division side, the local authority said that switching to an astro pitch would have 'no visual amenity issues of substance', with the new stand proving to have 'no significant visual concerns'.
Burgh announced the planned redevelopment of Keanie Park in April 2024 – a year after the club received significant investment as part of a bid to reach the professional level of the game.
Williams added that some of the changes are being made with a vision of gaining entry-level status for the SPFL. He said: 'The first lot of work we'll be doing will be the lights and hopefully we'll have them by the start of the season.
'After that, it's our toilet block, which are the main two things we need as part of the licensing to allow us to be promoted next season.'
Johnstone South councillor, and Burgh supporter, Andy Steel is thrilled about the news of the plans being approved – with the politician particularly excited about off-street parking being tackled.
He said: 'I welcome this decision because I think this project has the potential to allow the Burgh to develop the site and the club to fit their vision, but also to address some local issues which have been long standing.
'In particular, the creation of off-street parking ought to help address the problems residents have had at times with fans deciding that they are going to park where they like. That's been highly inconsiderate so I hope this will reduce that problem.
'A revamped pavilion will lift the look of the wider area, while seating in the cowshed will be welcomed by those of us on the wrong side of 50.
'The creation of all-weather surfaces will not only drive revenue for Burgh and prevent postponements, but provide another resource for the many teams in our area who are always on the lookout for somewhere to play.'

Max Dowman's behaviour jumps out as Arsenal wonderkid's character comes to light
Arsenal prospect Max Dowman has impressed during the club's pre-season tour and one of his former academy coaches has highlighted the personality trait that set him apart from his team-mates Arsenal starlet Max Dowman's character stood out from his team-mates even during his early days at the club's academy. Dowman has been a breakout star during the Gunners' pre-season tour, despite being just 15 years old. The attacking midfielder is the only one of the several unproven youngsters in manager Mikel Arteta's pre-season squad to have featured in all three of the side's friendlies. Dowman made his first team debut in a win over AC Milan before impressing against Newcastle United and earning the winning penalty. He replaced Bukayo Saka in Arsenal's recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, apt considering Dowman's behaviour has drawn comparisons to the Hale End graduate. Former Arsenal academy coach Temisan Williams previously worked with Dowman and highlighted a moment that summed up his humble personality. 'When I left Arsenal, Max was one of the few players who personally said to me, 'Thank you for everything you've done for me, how you've helped me, what I've learned from you and I wish you all the best,'' Williams recalled to Sky Sports. 'I always remember this – and these behaviours are recognised by coaches in players. 'He was just a very measured young man, definitely mature beyond his years, even when you were talking with him one-on-one. Whenever you're talking to him, he'd look into your eyes and he'd really want to understand. ''What is it that you want me to know, what is it you want me to do, how are you going to help me, how is this going to help my development?'' Dowman has clearly heeded all advice from his coaches as he continues to excel above his age group, having been called up to train with Arteta's side in November. He scored 15 goals in as many league games for Arsenal's under-18s side last season, as well as becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer in the U19 UEFA Youth League, aged 14. However, despite his eye for goal and talent for dribbling with the ball, Dowman's approach to his team-mates most impressed Williams, a quality that has likely helped him adapt during his step up into the first team. 'He was a brilliant team-mate,' Williams explained. 'I always look at when things are going wrong in development football – when things aren't coming off for players and they're maybe frustrated, losing, all that type of stuff. 'I'd look at Max's reaction, he would always be encouraging his team-mates. You'd never see him dig out a player in a very rash way or complain at players. I'm sure if you asked anyone who's trained and played with him through the academy, they'd probably echo the same sentiments.' Arsenal boss Arteta showed willingness to integrate academy prospects into his title-chasing squad last season, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri becoming first-team regulars. Dowman is in the pre-season squad alongside 15-year-old Marli Salmon, 17-year-old striker Andre Harriman-Annous and other youngsters, becoming the latest academy stars on the verge of a breakthrough. Discussing Dowman's display against Newcastle, Arteta said: 'It is special. What he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch, it is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him.' It remains to be seen whether Dowman will continue to link up with the senior side once the season gets underway, given his lack of experience at Premier League 2 level. However, his former coach Williams has little doubt about the levels Dowman could reach in the future. ' Champions League, World Cup, Premier League,' Williams concluded. 'He's got all the capabilities; he's got the mentality. Mikel Arteta wouldn't bring him into the fold at that age if he didn't.' It's mad – Ethan Williams in dreamland after first senior goal for Man Utd
The 19-year-old academy product ended last season on loan at Cheltenham, scoring two goals in 17 appearances during a fruitful spell in League Two. Williams had expected to spend much of this summer working with the Under-21s, only for Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim to last week give him the nod for their pre-season tour to the United States. A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) A whirlwind week peaked on Wednesday night in Chicago, where he replaced Amad Diallo in the 70th minute and went onto score a fine strike in a promising 4-1 win over Bournemouth. 'It's mad, I can't believe it,' Williams said. 'It still hasn't really sunk in, to be honest. It's a dream come true and I'm so happy right now. 'I'm thinking about all the moments, all the hard work I've been through,' he said. 'You know, I feel so blessed and so happy to be given this opportunity. 'To score, it's mad. I can't even explain how I am feeling, to be honest.' Williams was an unused substitute in their first Premier League Summer Series friendly against West Ham at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where next year's World Cup final will be held. 2️⃣ wins in 2️⃣ at the #PLSummerSeries 🙌 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 31, 2025 It is a position the winger did not expect to find himself in at the start of last week, when he was primed to stay home having been an unused substitute in the senior side's pre-season opener against Leeds. 'It was last-minute,' Williams told club media. 'I was kind of told I wasn't (going) and then I was. 'I remember just… not really jumping around the bedroom, but I was buzzing. 'I've been trying to train well as these guys are the best players I've ever trained with, know what I mean? To be around it and be learning every single day is a real blessing and I'm just thankful for it all.'
