Julio Cesar Chavez Sr says there's ‘no way' his son gets ‘embarrassed' by Jake Paul

Independent15-05-2025
Boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr cannot fathom a world where his son is beaten by Jake Paul after 'The Problem Child' vowed to 'embarrass' the former world champion.
Paul, 28, is set to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in California on June 28, coming into his next in-ring bout off the back of beating 58-year-old Mike Tyson back in November.
The American remains a highly divisive figure in the sport but having mainly boxed MMA fighters in his journey so far, he now faces the test of Chavez Jr, a former WBC middleweight champion.
Chavez Jr, 39, has won 53 of his 61 fights, but has only competed once since 2021 - a lacklustre decision win over ex-UFC star Uriah Hall.
Nevertheless, Chavez Sr, 62, is still confident Paul doesn't stand a chance against his son.
"Jake Paul is young and strong, but he's never faced a fighter like my son," Chavez Sr said at Wednesday's news conference.
"I would've given Mike Tyson a better fight. He didn't throw one punch the whole fight.
"I haven't seen him train at this level for many years. If he keeps this up until the fight, there is no way Jake Paul is going to beat my son.'
A former Disney Channel child actor, Paul has amassed a record of 11 wins since making his jump into boxing, with his only loss coming against Tommy Fury in 2023.
Taking on a man who has previously gone the distance with pound-for-pound superstar Canelo Alvarez, Paul is raring to humiliate the former champion in his pursuit of an unlikely cruiserweight title shot.
"This is his toughest fight to date, and I'm going to embarrass him and make him quit like he always does," Paul said. "This guy is a great fighter, and I want to test myself against the best in the world.
"Going from Disney Channel to YouTube to world champion in six to seven years? That's the most relatable and best sports story that any kid can get behind.'

Emma Raducanu crashes out in straight sets as Amanda Anisimova dominates Montreal meeting

Emma Raducanu was dumped out of the National Bank Open in Montreal as she went down 6-2-6-1 to American fifth seed Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu had won both of their previous meetings, but rarely looked like extending that run as she held her serve just once in either set. Wimbledon finalist Anisimova came from 40-15 down to break Raducanu's serve in the second game of the match and, although the British No 1 broke back immediately, she was unable to fashion another break point in the contest. Anisimova broke again to make it 3-1 and added a third break to wrap up the set. Her dominance continued in the second set as Raducanu won just eight points on her own serve, avoiding the whitewash after losing the first five games before Anisimova served out for a place in the fourth round. She will face 10th seed Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya in the last 16. Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek needed little more than an hour to complete a 6-2 6-2 victory over Germany's Eva Lys, but Jessica Pegula's bid for a third straight Montreal title was ended by world No 386 Anastasija Sevastova. The Latvian, a former world No 11 who has had lengthy spells out on maternity leave and with a torn ACL, beat the third seed 3-6 6-4 6-1. PA

Shannon Sharpe makes first public appearance since ESPN firing as he presents brother with Hall of Fame jacket

Shannon Sharpe made his first public appearance since his ESPN firing on Friday night, as he helped induct his brother into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe was axed by ESPN on Wednesday just weeks after he reached a settlement with his ex-girlfriend, who had accused him of raping her in a $50million lawsuit. Despite the settlement, ESPN relieved Sharpe, 57, of his duties almost two years since prizing him away from rivals Fox Sports. Sharpe later broke his silence and accused the network of ignoring his request to delay the announcement until next week - with the Hall of Fame induction looming. Though they did not honor his request, Sharpe appeared in good spirits as he was seen on stage with his brother Sterling on Friday evening. The axed ESPN analyst was seen putting the prestigious gold jacket on his brother Sterling as the duo became the first set of brothers to be in the Hall of Fame. More to follow...

Bryson Stott drives in game-winner as Phillies rally past Tigers

August 2 - Bryson Stott drove in two runs Friday, including the game-winner in the eighth inning, to help the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over Detroit, snapping the Tigers' four-game winning streak. Starter Ranger Suarez gave up three runs on four hits over seven innings for Philadelphia. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Gleyber Torres belted his 12th homer of the year 404 feet to left field, scoring Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones. Philadelphia loaded the bases in the seventh and pulled within 3-1 when Stott flew out to center field, driving in Nick Castellanos. Otto Kemp then cut it to 3-2 when he scored off of Trea Turner's single to right. The Phillies knotted the game with Kyle Schwarber's single to right field that brought home newly acquired Harrison Bader. On the ensuing at-bat, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was ejected when he argued with third base umpire Vic Carapazza, who called him out on a check-swing third strike. The Tigers retook the lead when Perez hit a solo shot to center field in the eighth off of Orion Kerkering (6-4). The Phillies tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with Kemp's double that scored Castellanos from second and went ahead 5-4 when Stott's infield single brought in Kemp. Stott had originally been called out on a throw to first base, but a challenge by Philadelphia was successful. Despite allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Kerkering picked up the win. Jhoan Duran, who was obtained in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, came on in the ninth and registered three quick outs for his 17th save of the season. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty struck out seven and allowed one run and two hits over six innings. Four Tigers relievers were unable to keep the Phillies at bay. Brenan Hanifee (3-3) picked up the loss after allowing Philadelphia's final two runs. --Field Level Media
