Dakar Rally champion Al-Rajhi eyes September return after accident
Al-Rajhi, 43, became the first Saudi to win the Dakar Rally in January, completing the 12-stage race nearly four minutes ahead of South African rival Henk Lategan. The event, relocated to Saudi Arabia in 2020 after years in South America, originally followed a Europe-to-Africa route but shifted due to security concerns after 2007.
"I am gradually recovering from the injury I sustained in Aqaba in April while participating in the Jordan Baja," Al-Rajhi told Reuters on Tuesday, referencing the accident that flipped his car during the rally. His co-driver, Germany's Timo Gottschalk, was also seriously injured.
"I am following the treatment and rehabilitation programme strictly under the supervision of a specialised medical team amid high morale and great determination to return."
Al-Rajhi, who competes for his own team Yazeed Racing, said he expects to return in September at Rally Portugal.
"God willing, I anticipate resuming participation in competitions in the last quarter of the 2025 season," he said, noting his plans to rejoin the FIA World Baja Cup, FIA World Rally-Raid Championship and Saudi Arabia's national championship.
Reflecting on his Dakar Rally victory, Al-Rajhi said: "I'm very proud and happy with the title after we won in Dakar with a private team not belonging to a factory for the first time in more than 25 years."
He described the achievement as a "major turning point in the history of motorsport".
Saudi Arabia has made significant investments in motorsports under its Vision 2030 initiative, hosting events such Formula One, Formula E, Extreme E and desert rally championships.
"Today the kingdom has become an international centre for motorsports, supported by advanced infrastructure and ambitious national cadres," Al-Rajhi said.
Looking ahead, Al-Rajhi sees growing interest in motorsports across the Arab world, including Qatar's hosting of Formula One and MotoGP, alongside Bahrain and the UAE's Formula One Grand Prix events. However, he stressed the need for an "integrated qualification system" to develop professional drivers in the region.
Internationally, Al-Rajhi believes Saudi Arabia and the Arab region "will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of motorsports, not only as hosts, but as real competitors for championships through teams and champions who carry the flags of their countries and achieve great things at the highest levels".
Saudi Arabia has signalled ambitions to own a Formula One team after its sponsorship of the sport and hosting its first F1 race in 2021. Energy giant Aramco remains a global partner of Formula One, while other Middle Eastern nations have strengthened ties to the sport through investments in teams such as McLaren, Audi and others.

Tongaat teen volleyballer claims silver medal in national debut
Tongaat teenager Shridhaan Lahldas made his national volleyball debut at the Region 5 Games, returning with silver for South Africa. The South African U19 men's volleyball team delivered a spirited performance at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games, held from July 4 to 13 in Namibia. South Africa progressed to the final after edging out Malawi in a tense five-set semi-final (3-2), but were ultimately outplayed by a dominant Zimbabwean side, who secured gold with a straight-sets victory (3-0). The AUSC Region 5 Games saw 10 southern African nations compete across various sporting codes, with the volleyball matches held in Windhoek. Lahldas (17), a Grade 11 pupil at Seatides Combined School and player for Anglers Volleyball Club juniors, described the tournament as a dream come true. 'There are no words to describe the feeling of representing my country for the first time,' he said. Despite falling short in the final, Lahldas said the experience was invaluable. 'Playing against different countries meant adapting to new styles and tactics. There were lots of small variables to adjust to.' He praised Zimbabwe's strength and noted South Africa had suffered several injuries ahead of the final. 'Their power hitters came at us with brutal force. They flew through the air and sped around the court, it was intense. We had some injuries but not enough time to recover on the day.' His father, Ryaan Lahldas, a former Proteas volleyball player who represented South Africa for 14 years, said the family was extremely proud of Shridhaan's achievement. 'He was bound to take up the sport, it runs in the family and is one of the main sports in Tongaat.' After several seasons of underachievement—particularly in the league—Amakhosi will enter the new campaign under increased scrutiny. Last season's Nedbank Cup triumph provided a much-needed silver lining, and expectations are now high for a stronger all-round showing. Chiefs have been busy in the transfer market, adding multiple reinforcements to strengthen the squad. The Netherlands tour provided head coach Nasreddine Nabi and his technical team the chance to integrate the new arrivals and assess combinations ahead of the season. Next on the calendar is the Toyota Cup clash against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, which will serve as a key tune-up before competitive football resumes. Kwinika, who joined the club in 2022 and recently signed a contract extension, is hopeful of increased involvement in the upcoming season, and he believes the preseason trip brought valuable lessons for the team. 'The Netherlands has been good to us, Kwinika said. 'We have learned a lot, and we are definitely going back home as better people and players.' Chiefs faced strong opposition during the tour, including a fixture against former Dutch champions FC Twente. The experience exposed the squad to a higher level of play and a different tactical approach, which the central defender believes was crucial. 'The seconds they spend on the ball are minimal and quite effective. He continued 'The level is a bit high; they understand the moments very well. In whatever they do, they understand the right time to press, when and where to press, and how to keep the ball. 'They have a different way of playing football. In our South African style, we dribble people around, but here they dribble you with the pass.' The 31-year-old continued to add that the squad steadily improved with each match on tour and ended on a high note, which will set them up nicely ahead of the new campaign. 'I think we did well because we gradually grew as a team from the first game to the last game, taking into account the rest and training sessions. I thought we did well, and the boys felt good, and confidence after here is high.' The former Stellenbosch FC defender enjoyed a strong finish to last season after initially struggling for game time under Nabi. A string of injuries to other defenders opened the door for him, and he'll be aiming to carry that form into the new campaign. Ahead of their Toyota Cup outing, Kwinika says supporters can expect to see a new and improved Chiefs team next season. 'Supporters must expect a different team next season. We are growing as a group from where we left off last season. It will be a new season, and from the preseason we were just in now, we learned a lot. 'The Toyota Cup will be where we get to be tested with our African brothers, and even with that, we will be preparing ourselves for CAF competition.
