The move comes amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan.
Chandigarh, May 8 (PTI) A blackout was enforced in several districts of Punjab like Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Mohali and also the Union Territory Chandigarh on Thursday evening, officials said.
In Pathankot district, some locals claimed they heard explosion-like sounds. However, there was no official confirmation in this regard.
'There was loud noise, like sounds of bombing, and also non-stop sirens. It was too scary,' said a resident of Sujanpur in Pathankot.
Air raid warning sirens were activated in Pathankot where the blackout was enforced around 8:30 pm.
Authorities appealed to people to keep their lights switched off and stay at home. They also said there was no need to panic.
Pathankot Deputy Commissioner Aditya Uppal asked citizens in the border district to remain inside their homes and follow the protocols of the blackout.
The blackout was enforced in some other parts including Rupnagar, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Bathinda, Patiala and Haryana's Panchkula.
Officials said the blackout was enforced as a precautionary measure to ensure safety of citizens.
Meanwhile, the Mohali district administration declared jurisdiction of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar as 'No Flying Zone' for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
District Magistrate, SAS Nagar, Komal Mittal while exercising the power conferred upon under section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, ordered that the whole jurisdiction of SAS Nagar shall be 'No Flying Zone' with effect from May 8 till July 5.

Punjab is in alert mode with schools in border districts closed and leaves of all police personnel cancelled, officials said a day after India struck terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
Tensions escalated after Indian armed forces early Wednesday carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke, in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam.
On Thursday night, India swiftly thwarted Pakistan's fresh attempts to strike military sites with drones and missiles including in Jammu and Pathankot after foiling similar bids at 15 places in northern and western regions of the country. PTI CHS SUN VSD ZMN

UK: Lord Rami Ranger lauds PM Modi's leadership, welcomes FTA with India
London: British Indian businessman Lord Rami Ranger on Wednesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership while terming the possible signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as "a major development" and a "win-win situation" for both India and the United Kingdom. Speaking exclusively with the IANS just ahead of PM Modi's arrival in the country on a two-day visit, Ranger, an Indian-origin member (Peer) of the upper house of the UK, spoke highly of the development that has taken place in India over the past decade. He emphasised that the UK's economy will also witness a jump after collaborating with India. "It will be a very significant day as the Prime Minister will sign a Free Trade Agreement with the country that ruled over India for 200 years. We were once their colony, and today we stand as equals. This is a major development and it is the result of Prime Minister Modi's leadership. We are witnessing development in India in the past 10 years, like the 'Make in India' initiative. There will be transfer of technology along with the Free Trade Agreement. The FTA is made in heaven and a win-win situation benefitting many nations. The British economy will also jump after plugging in with the Indian economy. Whole world will benefit from it," said the 78-year-old Ranger. He mentioned that the Free Trade Agreement will bring stability to the markets of both countries and help traders on both sides. Earlier in the day, PM Modi departed on a two-day visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of his British counterpart Keir Starmer. It will be PM Modi's fourth trip to the UK since assuming office. During the visit, PM Modi will meet Starmer and also call upon King Charles III. In May, PM Modi and Starmer announced the successful conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK FTA, which is expected to double the trade between the two countries to $120 billion by 2030. Under the agreement, 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK will get the benefit of zero duty, an official statement detailed. "We all are very excited and extremely happy that Prime Minister Modi is coming to London. I only wish he had more time for everyone, for all Indians, because they are eagerly waiting to celebrate with him... What he is doing for our nation, we are really proud of him," said London based businessman, Ramesh Arora. Over the years, the historical ties between India and the UK have transformed into a robust, multi-faceted, mutually beneficial relationship. The relationship was elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. There has been enormous growth across all sectors including trade and economy, defence and security, climate, green energy, health, education, people-to-people ties. On PM Modi's UK visit, Jayu Shah of Friends of India Society International (FISI), UK said, "We will warmly welcome PM Modi in the UK. The trade agreement negotiations have been going on for 20 years. Now, PM Modi has managed to make the deal and the two nations will sign it. India is 'Vishwaguru', the superpower and all nations need it. India is the largest investor in the UK, businesswise". PM Modi, in his departure statement, highlighted that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has witnessed significant progress in recent years witnessing growth in a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties. "During my meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, we will have the opportunity to further enhance our economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and jobs creation in both countries. I also look forward to calling on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit," he added.

Delhi: Awami League leaders' news conference on ‘Bangladesh genocide' put off
New Delhi: A news conference by Awami League leaders and former ministers to speak about 'genocide in Bangladesh' was put off at the last moment on Wednesday, with the organisers saying the event had been adjourned out of respect for the victims of a deadly plane crash in Dhaka this week. Former Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina. (File Photo / AP) The event in New Delhi was organised by the Bangladesh Human Rights Watch (BHRW), whose US-based secretary general, Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, is known to be close to the Awami League and former Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina. Siddiqui has organised several events in the US in support of the Awami League and Hasina, whose government collapsed last August following weeks of protests led by students. The organisers had said that 'dignitaries and ministers' of the Awami League would address the news conference on 'military atrocities in Gopalganj and genocide in Bangladesh'. This was a reference to the death of four people during violence that erupted at a rally on July 16 by the student-led National Citizen Party in Gopalganj town, the hometown of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. When journalists gathered for the event, Siddiqui read out a statement that said the event was being adjourned out of respect for the victims of the plane crash at an educational institution in Dhaka on Monday. More than 35 people, mostly children, were killed and some 170 others injured when a military training aircraft crashed into the institution. 'In light of this grave tragedy and out of respect for the victims and their grieving families, we have made the difficult decision to adjourn the press conference,' Siddiqui said, adding a fresh date for the event will be announced in 'due course'. He also sought an 'independent investigation' into the air crash and repeated the Awami League's accusations against the caretaker administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Several former ministers of the Awami League, including Hasan Mahmud, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, have visited New Delhi over the past few days, and some of them were expected to take part in the news conference, people familiar with the matter said. The Bangladeshi side had informally conveyed its concerns about the event to the external affairs ministry, especially the impact it would have in the neighbouring country ahead of the first anniversary of the ouster of the Hasina government on August 5, the people said on condition of anonymity. 'It was pointed out that there are efforts underway to engage with the Indian side to normalise relations. Besides, the Indian side has said that it does not support any party in Bangladesh and such an event could have had an effect on that stance,' one of the people said. There was no official word on the development from the Indian side. India-Bangladesh ties have been at a low since the interim government led by Yunus assumed office. The Indian side has criticised the caretaker administration's handling of the repression of Bangladesh's minorities, especially Hindus, and New Delhi has imposed several import restrictions that have hit the flow of Bangladeshi goods through Indian land and sea ports.
