Cannot recall anything, says rape campus ‘GS'

1 2 Kolkata: A second-year law student, known as the "general secretary" on the law college campus, claimed she could not recollect the time of meeting the rape survivor last Wednesday evening or the conversation she had with her. Students at the college claimed the "GS", a TMCP member, was close to key accused Monojit Mishra. In the absence of an official students' union at the law college, Monojit apparently assigned posts to people close to him. But the girl denied both, saying she was "not the GS" and distanced herself from Monojit and his associates. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata The rape survivor, in her detailed complaint, mentioned she spent at least three hours with the "GS" last Wednesday. She wrote she was with the "GS" when she was about to leave the campus around 4 pm, but one of the co-accused called them to the union room to "discuss the college TMCP unit". Monojit and co-accused Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed were in the union room. Around 7.30 pm, the "GS" left, saying she would be back but did not return, the survivor stated in the complaint. The "GS" claimed she knew the survivor as a junior but denied accompanying her to the union room on the fateful day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "That day, I reached college around noon and left around 7 pm after playing badminton. I do not remember the time of meeting the girl that day, the conversation we had or going to the union room as a few days have passed. I did not accompany her to the union room. I can't tell how she went to the union room. I recall telling her, 'ami aschhi', by which I meant 'I was leaving' but she might have misinterpreted it as 'I would return'," the second-year girl told TOI. Many students insisted the "GS" was part of Monojit's gang. Some indicated it was not the first time that the "GS" had taken a woman to Monojit. They alleged the "GS" and another girl student acted as conduits through whom Monojit reached out to girls he fancied. While some did not dare refuse Monojit's advances and suffered silently, others stopped going to college. "Both GS and her close friend verbally abused people and engaged in character assassination of any girl, who tried to speak out against Monojit. These two girls never respected the dignity of a woman," a student said. "Apart from Pramit and Zaib, there were others in Monojit's gang, including a second-year student who carried out every instruction Monojit gave—from stalking to threatening women. But he still came to protest against this rape," said a second-year student. "There were two other boys, one a batchmate, who has distanced himself, and another from 4th year."

Sticker shocker: Bengaluru civic body's SC caste census sparks outrage over execution

Bengaluru: The caste census drive by BBMP has left residents fuming, as QR-coded stickers marking Scheduled Caste (SC) households have been slapped indiscriminately on everything from bikes to tea stalls — often without any actual enumeration. Launched on June 23, 2025, the survey aims to collect data on 101 SC communities across all eight BBMP zones. However, instead of meticulous data collection, the civic body's sticker campaign has drawn ridicule and criticism, especially on social media, for its shoddy implementation. According to the authorities, BBMP surveyors are supposed to visit homes, verify details, collect self-declaration forms, and place stickers at the entrance to signal participation. In practice though, many residents claim they weren't even consulted. Many woke up to stickers on their doors — and in some cases, on their parked vehicles — with no explanation or prior interaction. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru BBMP's special commissioner (welfare), Suralkar Vikas Kishore, admitted to the gaps in execution. "Enumerators have sometimes done a poor job. We will take stringent action. A sticker doesn't mean the survey is done," he told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O que é ar-condicionado sem dutos no Brasil? Knowledge Knower Undo He also noted that areas unlikely to have SC households are being skipped altogether. "Pls let me know the caste of HONDA ACTIVA!" a user posted on X, highlighting the absurdity of stickers appearing on scooters. Nagarbhavi resident Prabudh Shetty said he confronted officials who claimed the survey had been completed a month earlier. "That's false — we were always home, especially my elderly parents," he said. In Kasturinagar, Nirvigna KS said a sticker was slapped on her door with industrial glue, leaving stains. "Nobody asked us anything or explained what was going on. It's damaging my property." Despite the criticism, BBMP maintains the drive is progressing well. Officials claim they've identified more than 6.7 lakh SC individuals after covering more than 1.8 lakh SC households and 32 lakh general households. Citizens who missed the door-to-door round can scan the QR codes on the stickers to complete the survey online, or visit ward offices and Bengaluru One Centres. However, confusion persists. Smitha Ranganath, another Bengalurean, wrote that a sticker suddenly surfaced on her back gate, without any household member being surveyed. BBMP says it is now covering 1.8 lakh households a day and will intensify verification efforts in the coming weeks. However, for many citizens, the sticker campaign has already left a bitter aftertaste. What to do if a sticker appears on your door? ■ No interaction? Call the helpline at **9481359000** (also printed on the sticker) to request a proper survey ■ SC households left out? Scan the QR code on the sticker to fill out the self-declaration form online ■ For direct access: Visit portal:

Amid flood & festival work, Pujari urges officers to resume duty

1 2 Bhubaneswar: In the wake of flooding in several districts and Rath Yatra festival being underway, revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari on Wednesday urged OAS and ORS officers, on 'ceasework' strike across the state protesting against the attack on BMC officer Ratnakar Sahu, to resume their duties. Administrative work has been severely affected in districts due to the protests by officers since Tuesday. Urging officers to rejoin work, Pujari said, "The incident shocked everyone, and it is highly condemnable. So far, five persons have been arrested while other accused will be arrested and produced before court. We are ready for further discussions and to resolve the issue if they want." "With floodwaters receding, assessing the damage is very important. There is a forecast for heavy rain in the coming days. Moreover, three devotees died during Rath Yatra, and there is a need to ensure the smooth conduct of the rest of events. So, I request the officers to resume work for the greater interest of the public," Pujari added. OAS Association demanded the arrest of BJP's Jagannath Pradhan for his alleged involvement in the attack. "Police are investigating the incident from all angles, and the law will take its course," Pujari added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night?
