Irrigation and Food & Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced that the Telangana government will commence the distribution of new ration cards on July 14 at Tirumalagiri in the Tungaturthi constituency. The official launch will be conducted by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The Minister instructed district collectors to complete verification of all eligible applicants by July 13, ensuring that no deserving family is excluded. He emphasized the importance of a transparent and corruption-free selection process for beneficiaries.'Our government is committed to providing ration cards to all eligible individuals without any form of bias,' he said, adding that bi-monthly review meetings will be held to monitor the implementation process closely.Highlighting the government's flagship free fine rice scheme, he noted that 6 kg of rice per person per month is being provided to around 3.10 crore people—approximately 84% of the state's population—through fair price shops. This initiative costs the government over ₹13,000 crore annually. To ensure continued supply, the government distributed three months' rations at once in June, July, and August, allotting 18 kg per person, 105 kg per Antyodaya family, and 30 kg per Annapurna family.Criticizing the previous BRS government for overlooking food security and limiting ration card distribution, Mr. Reddy pointed out that while there were 89.73 lakh white ration cards in 2014, only 49,000 new cards were added during the BRS tenure, mainly during by-elections.He also highlighted Nalgonda's importance in the government's development agenda, mentioning efforts to revive the long-pending Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project. The government is coordinating with the Indian Army's engineering division to conduct electro-magnetic LIDAR surveys, aimed at fast-tracking technical approvals and restarting construction. In addition, Mr. Reddy stressed the need to speed up completion of key irrigation projects such as Dindi, HLC lining, Nellikal Lift Irrigation Scheme, Pillayipalli Canal, Dharmareddy Canal, and several other critical works.

US-India trade deal: India may relent on GM animal feed, stays firm on dairy & agri

New Delhi: India is looking to allow imports of certain genetically modified (GM) farm products used in animal feed as part of the proposed bilateral trade deal with the US but New Delhi remains firm on not giving concessions in market access in the sensitive dairy and agricultural sectors, people said. Talks on the deal are nearing conclusion with some last minute finetuning, said a person privy to the development, adding it could be announced well before the July 9 deadline when the US government's moratorium on reciprocal tariffs ends. An announcement on the trade deal is expected no later than the midnight of July 4-5, a second person said. The deal could be unveiled in phases and the issue of levying taxes on digital services could also be done separately, the person said. "Sensitive agriculture and dairy products are out of the deal. There could be some farm products such as apples where limited concessions are being worked out," said an official, adding that concessions for US-made automobiles are high on priority list. Live Events India is demanding greater access for labour-intensive industries such as textiles and electronics. "Only those goods are being considered where both sides are on the same page," the official said. The US wants duty concessions in sectors such as industrial goods, automobiles such as electric vehicles, wines, petrochemical products, dairy, agriculture items such as apples, tree nuts, and GM crops. It also wants to export GM corn and soya bean to India. "For non-GM crops, we want a certificate, but they say that it's difficult to do so because both varieties grow together," the official said. Trump, Zelenskyy to discuss arms delivery pause on Friday: Report

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to discuss the abrupt halt in some key US weapons deliveries to Kyiv in a call on Friday, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. Zelenskyy would also raise potential future arms sales, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the planning. The timing of the call could change, the newspaper added. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. The US has paused some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine due to low stockpiles. That decision led to Ukraine calling in the acting US envoy to Kyiv on Wednesday to underline the importance of military aid from Washington continuing, and caution that the move would weaken Ukraine's ability to defend against intensifying Russian airstrikes and battlefield advances. Live Events Details about the supply of military assistance are being clarified at the working level, Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Wednesday. The US move led in part to a cut in deliveries of Patriot air defence missiles that Ukraine relies on to destroy fast-moving ballistic missiles. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

Ex-CECs say ECI within remit to conduct a revision, but find timeline 'challenging'

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel While most former Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) agree that the Election Commission (ECI) is within its remit to conduct an 'intensive revision' of the electoral rolls (ERs), many expressed concern over the timing of such an exercise in Bihar given the proximity to the assembly elections. N Gopalaswami , who was the EC from 2004 (amid a similar IR exercise) and CEC from 2006 to 2009, told ET: "Earlier, the intensive revision, involving house-to-house verification, was usually done 6-8 months before polls. This was discontinued later and only summary revisions were done. As a result, house-to-house verification has not been done for several years and may be due. The only concern is that the time available appears very short which brings up the question whether the SIR can be successfully completed and its full objectives achieved." "It is not impossible to do it, though it will be challenging. There are 3-4 months to go for the election, but it is tight," he CEC OP Rawat said while there were worries over the short timeline, the ECI machinery is well-equipped to complete the SIR on time. "It is true that Intensive Revision of ERs is usually not done so close to elections but one must remember the context. ECI is being repeatedly targeted on the ER issue, so in a way it has been compelled to act. An Intensive Revision might help address these political allegations . An IR should anyways be done every 15-20 years to ensure that aspects not looked into during summary revisions are also addressed. ECI has already got its machinery moving to conduct the exercise", Rawat told former CEC said the SIR exercise appeared to be "too much, too soon" for a densely populated state like Bihar. He pointed to the highly charged political environment and 'NRC' like allegations which were certainly not desirable for the poll panel which is meant to be a 'neutral referee'.Another former CEC said while an IR may have been warranted in 2002-2004 period, the ECI has thereafter digitalised the electoral roll, which has led to de-weeding of the ER. These systems have led to a 'silent purification' of ERs reflected in the 2024 elections with total electors at 96.8 crore, a number which would have been much higher without the exercise, he held."The current ER would be near 99% pure due to several inbuilt checks and balances and political parties' scrutiny. Bihar has seen a household-based ECI survey in 2022-23. Therefore, what is the need for such an SIR when adequate technology is available to do so non-intrusively and with minimum discomfort to the elector? Why is the 2003 cut-off date being used when several roll revisions have been done in elections thereafter? There is a concern on ECI deciding on citizenship, the poll panel usually has held that this is the remit of the home ministry. What is the desired motive of this exercise which may be extended to the whole country," he told ET on condition of former CEC said: "Even if the ECI feels the need for IR, why bring in parental identity documentation requirements. So, there are questions around past precedents, if any, whether the ECI should have held consultations with political parties before announcing the exercise and whether it could have chosen to start with a state that is not so near an election."While ET could not contact the 13th CEC, TS Krishnamurthy, in a recent PTI interview he said: "Usually, door-to-door verification of the ER is conducted every five years. But this time, a special and intensive registration drive has been ordered. ECI has taken this step in response to ongoing criticism. However, the issue with our political parties is that whether work is done or not, they still find something to complain about."
