'I Wasn't Comfortable...': Rohit Sharma Narrates Unnerving Moments Of T20 WC Final
Last Updated:
India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma admitted panicking during the T20 World Cup final, but praised Virat Kohli and Axar Patel's crucial partnership.
India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma has admitted that he was panicking and was not feeling comfortable during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa last year, as he thought that three quick wickets meant that they had handed the game over to the Proteas, before ace batter Virat Kohli and Axar Patel built a partnership.
India had won the toss and opted to bat, but Rohit, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav fell, leaving the team at 34/3 in the powerplay.
But Kohli, who had struggled throughout the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Windies, rose to the occasion in the final, scoring a patient 76 off 59 balls.
After Axar's dismissal in the 14th over, Kohli and Shivam Dube stitched together 47 runs for the fifth wicket.
'If you hit three boundaries in the first over, then you've started well. That's what every cricketer wants. The experience of playing for India for so many years helps. You can control your emotions, control your thoughts and stay in the moment," Rohit said while speaking to JioHotstar, on Kohli's knock.
'I'm sure he was thinking the same: 'Today is the day I need to be focused.' Not worrying about what happened before. And he played a brilliant innings, a fantastic partnership with Axar," Rohit added.
'I was panicking. I wasn't comfortable. I thought we'd let them into the game. Of course, in the back of my mind, I always believed our lower middle order, although it hadn't batted much during the tournament, had made an impact whenever given the opportunity," Rohit said.
The former T20I captain praised Axar's knock, calling it underrated but important to India's victory over South Africa.
'Not many people are talking about Axar's knock, but it was the game-changer. Scoring 47 off 31 at that stage was vital. And we needed one player to bat through the innings, Virat did that brilliantly," Rohit said.
Chasing 177 to win, South Africa found themselves at 12/2 in the third over before wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs built a 58-run partnership for the third wicket.
After Stubbs was dismissed by Axar in the ninth over, de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen added 36 runs for the fourth wicket, to take South Africa closer to the target.
After de Kock was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh in the 13th over, Klaasen and David Miller added 45 runs for the fifth wicket.
Once Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen, South Africa couldn't make a comeback and India won the game by just seven runs.

'Wanted To Step Down After 2023 World Cup..': Rohit Reveals Talk With Dravid
Rohit Sharma revealed that he persuaded Rahul Dravid to stay on as coach after India's 2023 World Cup defeat. India ODI captain Rohit Sharma revealed in a recent interview that he told then-head coach Rahul Dravid after losing to Australia in the final of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad. Despite remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, India failed to secure the title against the Pat Cummins-led team at Narendra Modi Stadium. Following India's defeat, Dravid expressed his desire to step down from his coaching role. However, Rohit Sharma, the then skipper, persuaded Dravid to stay on until the T20 World Cup 2024. On the anniversary of India's T20 World Cup victory, Rohit recalled his discussion with Dravid. He said, 'Rahul bhai wanted to step down after the 2023 World Cup. But we said, 'There's another World Cup in six months. We've come this far. Let's give it one more shot.' He agreed-and I'm so glad he did. I'm sure even now he feels that he made the right decision," Rohit was quoted as saying in an interview with JioHotstar. Dravid's last assignment as India's head coach ended up being the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa, where India defeated the Proteas by seven runs to win the title. What Rohit Said About T20 World Cup? Rohit also expressed his pride in finally lifting an ICC title as captain in Barbados, calling it the proudest moment of his career. 'For me personally, it was also emotional. My identity as a cricketer began with this format in the 2007 T20 World Cup. To come full circle and lift the trophy again in 2024-it was just fantastic," Rohit said. 'Barbados will forever be in my veins. This is the proudest moment of my cricketing career. To lift that trophy, to be crowned ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Champions-it was surreal. I played in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and we won under MS Dhoni 's captaincy. And now, to win it again with Rahul Dravid as head coach-it meant everything to this group. We've seen heartbreak. We've come so close. That's why this one was so special. We worked and planned relentlessly every day. And when we finally won, all the emotions came pouring out. The younger players, especially those playing their first World Cup, realised how hard it is to win one. Nothing can be taken for granted. It was magical." After India's T20 World Cup win, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game, and the BCCI appointed Suryakumar Yadav as Rohit's successor to lead India in T20Is. Following Rahul Dravid, the BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India. First Published: June 29, 2025, 19:08 IST

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma won't play vs Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 due to...
In this collection of pictures we shall know the reason why Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma won't play vs Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Let's dive in. India and Pakistan haven't played a cricket series against each other since 2012-13. Many believed that fans might not get to watch them compete even in international tournaments soon, as the relationship between the two countries in cricket got worse after the Pahalgam attack. However, there is some positive news, and recent updates hint that this famous rivalry might return. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) might announce the Asia Cup 2025 timetable in the first week of July. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but some early promotions for the event have reportedly started. If everything goes smoothly, the Asia Cup 2025 might start on September 10. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been some of India's best players against Pakistan, but they won't be playing if the Asia Cup happens. The reason is clear, they are retired from the T20 format. The 2025 Asia Cup will be in the T20 format, and both stars have stopped playing this version of cricket. Kohli and Rohit ended their T20I careers after helping Team India win the T20 World Cup in 2024. India is set to host the Asia Cup, but the competition might take place in another country if it happens. Pakistan is not willing to come to India, and holding the tournament in two places just for one match doesn't make sense. So, the ACC and BCCI might decide to shift the Asia Cup to a different location, with the UAE being the most likely option. After the Pahalgam attack, there were talks that India might stop facing Pakistan even in international tournaments. However, reports suggest that both teams will still compete in the Asia Cup and ICC events. The main reason is that India vs Pakistan games bring in a lot of money, which is important for the smooth running of cricket boards and organizers.
