Larry Lamb Q&A: 'Playing Mick Shipman has made me a better man'

Larry Lamb was born in Edmonton in 1947. He is an actor and radio presenter, known for his role of Mick Shipman in Gavin & Stacey. He appeared on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2016.
What's your earliest memory?
One steady thing, among all the chaos of my childhood: all the wider family would gather together at the Rose and Crown pub and we kids would sit around eating crisps and drinking what we called kids' cocktails.
Who are your heroes?
In childhood probably Desperate Dan from the Dandy because he could eat a whole cow pie while holding the horns. As an adult, Barack Obama. He comes across as an admirable, honest person who did his best to do as much good as he could.
What book last changed your thinking?
I was listening to a podcast about espionage, and the CIA man being interviewed happened to mention a book by a colleague of his, David McCloskey. He said that if you ever want to know what that world is like, read David's book Damascus Station – and so I did. And it quashed any interest in becoming a spy I ever had!
What would be your Mastermind specialist subject?
Perhaps geography and world capitals. I've travelled the lot in my decades-long career, and I love looking at maps, so I think this would be my best chance.
Who would paint your portrait?
My two daughters, Eva and Eloise, to draw their version of me. That would be interesting, to see how your children perceive you.
In which time and place, other than your own, would you like to live?
I don't think there's any better time than where we are now! You can look back on other periods with interest – and I do – but our living conditions are so much better now. I wouldn't want to be living at any time other than the present.

What TV show could you not live without?
Gavin & Stacey – it's been a pivotal moment in my life and a real pleasure to play Mick Shipman, who is so loved by so many. Playing him has made me a better man too.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
My son's mother telling me that under no circumstances must I ever bully or dominate our son, unless I wanted to have a relationship with him like the one I had with my father. That was without a doubt the most important piece of advice I was ever given, and I followed it to the letter.
What's currently bugging you?
I'm 77, and I hope to live to 100. But I know it's going to bug me that, when it's my time to go, I still won't know everything.
What single thing would make your life better?
Winning the lottery – I'm just a regular sort of a guy!
When were you happiest?
Right now. The older I get, the more I love life. I understand it more than I ever did, I appreciate it more than I ever did, and I appreciate those around me more than I ever did.
In another life, what job might you have chosen?
Being a lumberjack. It's my favourite job, cutting a log in pieces, and when they've matured and dried out, taking a big axe and splitting them.
Are we all doomed?
It's too easy to say yes, but I don't believe that. Sometimes, reading the news, it might appear that we are all doomed – but there are always forces for good and who come out of the chaos. The world is a big place. Something's got to go pretty black for all eight billion people to be doomed.

Blind woman takes on wing walking challenge in aid of charity

"People often have low expectations of blind people, and I want to combat that by attempting extreme things."Mel Griffiths says being blind motivates her to try extreme sports to show that blindness does not stop people from doing exciting things her latest venture, the 60-year-old will be reaching new heights - wing walking at 700ft (213m) to raise money for the Guide Dogs said: "I'm no good at cake sales and things like that - I'd much rather strap myself to a plane instead." Mrs Griffiths, from Arnold in Nottinghamshire, will complete the wing walk on 8 August at Wickenby in will be strapped on to a wing for about ten minutes and will travel at speeds of up to 120 mph (193km/h). Her inspiration came from watching people wing walking on an episode of Blue Peter 50 years added: "I remember watching it on telly and thinking, 'wow, I'd love to do this'."I've had poor eyesight ever since I was a little girl, and at the time, I didn't think wing walking was possible for someone like me."But now, I like to show off and prove to people that we can do anything. I've done everything from parachute jumps to abseiling - and it won't stop there!"In terms of preparation, Mrs Griffiths said she had spoken to the pilot in advance."[The pilot] told me he'd never worked with a blind person before, so that should be fun," she said. "He said he's never dropped anyone, though, so I'll be fine." Mrs Griffiths said her husband Gavin Griffiths was a massive inspiration. He is due to play at Wimbledon in August as part of a national competition for visually impaired said: "Me and him encourage each other - he pushes me more and more, and I do the same for him."We are both proving that the sky is the limit for people like us, and we hope we can motivate other people in the community to do the same."The pair are actually taking on their challenges on the same day - with Mrs Griffiths heading across to Lincolnshire and Gavin to Wimbledon on 8 August. Mrs Griffiths said she was wing walking on behalf of the Guide Dogs charity because it had supported her throughout her life."I got my first guide dog at 24, and she gave me the freedom and independence to live my life to the fullest," she has raised over £2,500 of her £5,000 target so added: "It now costs the charity around £100,000 to raise and train a guide dog from being a puppy to adulthood. "It's so important for them to keep going as guide dogs to enable people to live their lives to the fullest."Kim Hutchings, local community fundraising manager at Guide Dogs, said: "As a charity, we rely almost entirely on donations to keep our life-changing services for people with sight loss running."We wish Mel the best of luck with this exciting challenge and with reaching her fundraising target."

England icon Paul Gascoigne 'doing well' after collapse and trip to hospital

Paul Gascoigne's representative says the England football icon is 'doing well' and has returned home after a reported collapse and trip to hospital. Gascoigne was found 'semi-conscious' in the bedroom of his home and initially admitted to an intensive care unit, The Sun reported this weekend. The 58-year-old, nicknamed 'Gazza', has long been of concern among many supporters due to his well known battles with alcohol addiction and mental health struggles – although he did reportedly remain sober for three months over the summer. Gascoigne's representative has now provided an update on the man who helped lead England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996, widely considered one of the most talented players of his generation. 'Paul voluntarily went into A&E on Friday after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while,' Carly Saward told the Associated Press. Saward, who works for the MNT talent agency, added: 'He is already back home and doing well.' Gascoigne is a legend for his country and a number of clubs he played for during his career – adored for his skill on the pitch and his personality off it. He is best known for his spells at Newcastle United, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers and was capped 57 times by the Three Lions from 1988 to 1998. In March 2024, Gascoigne admitted he was a 'sad drunk' as he publicly opened up about his battle to stay sober. 'I used to be a happy drunk, I ain't anymore,' he said on the High Performance podcast. 'I'm a sad drunk. I don't go out and drink, I drink indoors. If I want to make it a bad day, [all I need to do is] go down the pub. 'If I want it to be a good day, I get my flying rod out and go fishing. It's not the drinking, it's the afterwards. 'Looking at my phone after and seeing 30 messages or missed calls, I know I'm in trouble. 'But I've been alright. Last year (2023) wasn't brilliant, was off and on for a couple of months.' More Trending England star fumes 'this is why I hate London' after his car is broken into In November 2024, Gascoigne revealed he had failed the psychiatrist test to appear on ITV reality show I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here five times, confessing that he was high on cocaine for one of the tests. 'You had to see a psychiatrist. If you pass the psychiatrist's test, you're in. I failed five f***ing times,' he told The Sun. 'And to be honest, the first time I went to see her, I was on cocaine, so she must have f***ing knew.' Seann Walsh 'in talks for I'm A Celeb All Stars return' after Strictly romance scandal

I'm a Celebrity... South Africa, known as All Stars, is said to be returning and there's speculation that a former Strictly Come Dancing star is in talks with ITV to appear on it A former Strictly Come Dancing contestant is said to be in talks to appear on I'm A Celebrity spin-off All Stars. Seann Walsh was a campmate in the jungle almost three years ago, but he's now reportedly considering a return. ‌ Seann, 39, was a late arrival on I'm A Celebrity in 2022. He entered the jungle in Australia alongside former politician Matt Hancock, and they later joined the main camp. The comedian went on to place fifth on the ITV show that year. ‌ He had expressed hope that his stint on the show would change public opinion following a scandal during his time on Strictly four years prior. Seann had been photographed kissing his dance partner, Katya Jones, on a night out in 2018, despite both being in relationships with other people. They both apologised at the time for their behaviour. ‌ It's now reported that Seann is in "advanced talks" to appear on the second series of I'm a Celebrity... South Africa is often referred to as All Stars. The show, which launched in 2023, is due to be filmed in South Africa again later this year. A source told The Sun: "When [Seann] went into the jungle in 2022, he very much did it in the hope of redeeming himself in the eyes of the viewing public." They said: "He managed to emerge as one of the more popular campmates and actually finished in a respectable fifth place in the contest." ‌ They went on to mention him having entered camp with Matt, who had himself made headlines over an affair with his aide, Gina Coladangelo. Speaking about Seann, the source said: "Part of the reason why he came across comparatively well was because he went into I'm A Celebrity with an even bigger love rat." Seann, who had been in a relationship with actor Rebecca Humphries when the scandal broke during his time on Strictly in 2018, previously said that his current partner, Grace Adderley, had encouraged him to do I'm A Celebrity. He said that she was the "main reason" he was doing it. He said in 2022: "As you can imagine, I was very scared after the last time I was on a big show because the fallout was not something you would want to go back to. Grace talked me into doing it. She convinced me it was the wrong attitude to have, not doing it because I feared what people would think, but to do it because I would have a wonderful time." ‌ Seann, who has said that the impact of the Strictly scandal led to him experiencing panic attacks, acknowledged prior to his stint in the jungle that people had opinions on him already. Seann, who now has a daughter with Grace, said he was "hoping" viewers would see that he is "very different". The I'm A Celebrity spin-off, which features the return of former campmates, launched two years ago. Myleene Klass won the debut series, after being runner-up in 2006, with Jordan Banjo and Fatima Whitbread also in the final. ‌ It's rumoured that the show will be returning for a second series, which is reportedly due to be filmed in South Africa later this year. There has been speculation about the potential line-up recently prior to the report about Seann. Harry Redkna pp and Gemma Collins are rumoured to be returning for All Stars. Former football manager Harry won I'm A Celebrity back in 2018, whilst reality TV star Gemma appeared on the show in 2014 but quit after just a few days.
