Kentucky's Mark Pope Issues Stern Warning to Rick Pitino
The Kentucky head coach, who led the Wildcats to a Sweet 16 in his first season, is already looking ahead to a marquee showdown in December when Kentucky faces St. John's in the CBS Sports Classic.

The matchup, set for Dec. 20 in Atlanta, pits Pope against his former coach, Rick Pitino, in what promises to be a must-watch event.
But Pope isn't just thinking Xs and Os—he's thinking tailoring.
'I'm putting this out there so Coach P can hear it. I am bringing the suit game,' Pope said with a grin. 'I already started planning. Coach, just be ready. K? Bring it.'
He wasn't done.
'And the game's gonna be elite. I'm not going white. Listen, I'm not trying to be the Don. Like, that position's already been taken. But I'm bringing the Thunder. So I don't know what coach has prepared, but he better get with his tailor because it's on right now.'

It's the kind of playful energy that's made Pope an early fan favorite at Kentucky—and this game will carry a little more weight than most.
Not only are both teams expected to enter the season ranked, but it's also the first time Pope and Pitino will square off as opposing head coaches.
Pitino, now at St. John's, coached Pope during Kentucky's 1996 national title run.

The Red Storm are coming off a 31-5 season and will be replacing UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic field, which also includes Ohio State and North Carolina.
But come December 20? It's all about the Wildcats, the Red Storm—and the suits.

Chicago family goes viral giving Pope Leo XIV "Da Pope" T-shirt at mass in Italy
A Chicago family on vacation in Italy had the encounter of a lifetime with Pope Leo XIV after mass on Sunday. Marcel and Ann Muñoz were decked out with their three kids in shirts reading, "Da Pope" — like, "Da Bears" from the old "Superfans" sketches on "Saturday Night Live." The shirts were what other color but Chicago Bears navy blue, with white text and orange lines. After mass Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Pancras in Albano outside Rome, the family was able to meet Pope Francis and give him an extra shirt as a gift. The viral moment even made it onto a post from Pope Leo XIV's official Instagram. The Muñoz family said they are Bears season ticketholders, and hope this was the blessing Chicago needs to kickstart a Super Bowl dynasty. "He turned left, and he just kind of beelined towards us, so whatever it is, it's like everyone else is, you know, very nicely dressed for a summer mass except us — so we did kind of stick out," said Marcel Muñoz, "but you know, it's one of those things where it's like: 'Hey, you're going to be here once. Hopefully, you can catch his attention.'" "How many people get this opportunity to be in front of the pope, to have his attention, to hold his hand? I kissed his ring, and you know, it's such — you feel blessed," said Ann Muñoz. The Muñoz family had to drive 45 minutes outside Rome to Albano where Pope Leo XIV was saying mass. They positioned themselves at a spot after services where they thought their big, bold shirt would get his attention — when it happened.

Iowa basketball draws early-season SEC test in Acrisure Series
Iowa basketball will get a tough non-conference matchup early in the 2025-26 season. The Hawkeyes will travel over to Palm Springs, California, to compete in the 2025 Acrisure Classic on November 25. They're in a group with Utah, Ole Miss, and Grand Canyon, and they found out their matchup on Friday morning from longtime college basketball writer Jon Rothstein. They'll match up with the Rebels of Ole Miss in the opening game of the tournament. Ole Miss is coming off a successful NCAA Tournament run last season, where they beat North Carolina and Iowa State on their way to the Sweet 16, ultimately losing by three to Michigan State. They're coached by veteran winner Chris Beard, who's building quite the program down in Oxford. The Rebels lost some really good players from last year's team in Sean Pedulla and Dre Davis, but Beard has reloaded extremely well entering the 2025-26 season. He's bringing in the 16th-best recruiting class according to 247Sports, which includes four-stars Niko Bundalo, Tylis Jordan, and Patton Pinkins. He's also brought in some talented transfers in Koren Johnson, AJ Storr, and Travis Perry. This will be a good measuring stick opponent for the Hawkeyes early on this season. The Rebels are a good program in an elite basketball conference, and if Iowa hangs with them or even picks up a win, it'll say a lot about the direction of the program. All eyes will be on the Hawkeyes as they take on the Ole Miss Rebels at the Acrisure Classic. The winner of this game will face the winner of Utah and Grand Canyon on November 26 in the final.
