Mexico pledges action should U.S. talks fail by August tariff deadline

Reuters2 days ago
MEXICO CITY, July 15 (Reuters) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday said Mexico will take action if an agreement with Washington regarding new tariffs is not reached by the August 1 deadline set by her U.S. counterpart Donald Trump.
Trump on Saturday threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico starting on August 1, claiming the United States' top trading partner had not done enough to stop drug cartels.
"We hope to reach an agreement ... if an agreement is not reached on August 1, we will be informing of other actions," said Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum also said she hoped to announce measures next week in conjunction with tomato producers related to Washington's announcement on Monday that it will begin charging a duty of about 17% on imports of fresh tomatoes from Mexico.
"We think we can reach a deal. But we have to prepare for every scenario ... We have to have alternatives," Sheibaum said.

Nasdaq, S&P futures lifted by chip stocks after wild session

July 17 (Reuters) - Futures tracking the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 rose on Thursday, as strong results from Taiwan's TSMC boosted chipmakers after a rollercoaster session marked by concerns about the Federal Reserve's independence. At 5:45 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were down 24 points, or 0.05%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 5.75 points, or 0.1%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 41.25 points, or 0.18%. U.S. chipmakers rose in premarket trading after TSMC ( opens new tab, the world's main producer of advanced AI chips, posted a record quarterly profit, saying demand for artificial intelligence was getting stronger. U.S.-listed shares of TSMC gained 4% and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), opens new tab rose 1.2%. Marvell (MRVL.O), opens new tab inched up 0.7%, while Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and Super Mirco Computers (SMCI.O), opens new tab gained 0.7% and 1.3%, respectively. Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab edged 0.5% higher ahead of its quarterly results after markets close. "The market is underestimating the potential for a big U.S. earnings beat in the second quarter. Recent data on economic activity shows few signs of troubling weakness," HSBC analysts said. Wall Street ended the previous session with modest gains, with the Nasdaq soaring to yet another record high. Markets briefly tumbled in the previous session - dropping as much as 1% - after reports surfaced that President Donald Trump was considering firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Although Trump swiftly denied the reports, his ongoing criticism of the central bank and hints at possible action kept investors on edge about the Fed's independence. Fed officials have resisted cutting rates until there is clarity on whether Trump's tariffs on U.S. trading partners reignite inflation. The media reports on Wednesday sent odds of a September rate cut soaring to 66%, up from 54% earlier in the day. Currently, traders see a 55% chance of cutting in September, while a July move is almost completely off the table, according to CME's FedWatch tool. Meanwhile, attention also remained on looming tariffs, with an August 1 deadline threatening higher levies for many U.S. trading partners. Trump told Real America's Voice on Wednesday that the U.S. is closing in on a deal with India and may soon reach an agreement with Europe as well. Investors will also be eyeing June retail sales data, set for release at 8:30 a.m. ET, for fresh insight into consumer spending. At least four Fed officials, including Board Governors Adriana Kugler and Lisa Cook, are slated to speak.

Trump's former communication director says president has only apologized once in 20 years

Donald Trump 's former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci revealed that he's only witnessed the president apologize once in the past 20 years – and it was after a particularly 'embarrassing' moment. Scaramucci, who in 2017 served just 11 days in the Trump administration, made the revelation during a live taping of The Rest is Politics U.S. at London's O2 Arena on Wednesday. After rifling through the president's perceived hits and misses, an audience member asked 'The Mooch' and his co-host, MSNBC contributor Katty Kay, the most embarrassing thing they have seen the president do. 'The most embarrassing thing I saw him do, which was one of the things he did not want to do, is apologize to Melania,' the former financier said. The incident, which took place in October 2016, just months before Scaramucci joined Trump's transition team, was the only time in 20 years of knowing him that he could recall the president ever apologizing. 'I can tell you the exact day he did it. He did it at 11.50 p.m., and he did it on October 7, 2016,' he continued. 'And why is that? At 4 p.m. that day, they released the Access Hollywood tape where he was on the bus with Billy Bush, saying things that were wholly inappropriate. They were all panicked and Trump was embarrassed by it.' The interview tape featured Trump bragging in vulgar terms to Bush about his ability to grope and have sex with women when he pleases. It was leaked just one month before the 2016 presidential election, which saw him defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton at the ballot box. 'I made a move on her, and I failed. I'll admit it. I did try and f*** her… I moved on her like a b****. She was married,' Trump could be heard saying in the 2005 conversation, which was caught on a hot microphone. 'You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful... I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait,' he continued. 'And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the p***y. You can do anything.' The leaked recording prompted an immediate frenzy, and a day later, his wife Melania Trump told Fox News that 'he apologized to me' for his 'offensive' and 'inappropriate 'remarks.' Scaramucci noted another time when the president 'apologized.' 'He apologized to Melania Trump, and he was very embarrassed while he was doing it,' he said. 'And he apologized to the original Pocahontas for calling Elizabeth Warren Pocahontas,' he continued, citing Trump's nickname for the Democratic senator that some critics say amounts to a racial slur. 'He felt that was unfair to the original.' The president has been both celebrated and ridiculed for his political mantra: "Don't apologize for anything, ever." While on the campaign trail in 2015, Trump told late-night show host Jimmy Fallon, 'Apologizing is a great thing, but you have to be wrong.' A decade later, he regularly touts his omniscience in speeches and on social media and even hawks 'TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!' merchandise in his store.

Donald Trump's mystery bruises on hands spark health concerns as he covers them with makeup

Donald Trump's mysterious marks on his hands have appeared once again as the US President appeared to conceal them with makeup during his latest press conference Donald Trump's bruised hands have made headlines once again as the US president seemed to cover up his hands with makeup during a recent press briefing. On Tuesday July 15, eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that the 79-years-old's hand was caked in tanned liquid foundation during a close-up shot. ‌ This resparks previous concerns about recurring bruises on the president's hands, which were first spotted in the spring of 2024. The visible green bruise, turning purple, was visible on his hand during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday July 14. ‌ Some are now speculating that it could just be caused by the result of a firm handshake with Macron while others believe more serious health issues are to blame as Trump ages. With these worrying photos coming to light, Trump's White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was pressed for an explanation regarding the president's significant bruise, the Express reports. ‌ Karoline simply responded: "President Trump is a man of the people. His commitment is unwavering, and he proves that every single day." In a subsequent statement, the 27 year old added: "President Trump has bruises on his hand because he's constantly working and shaking hands all day every day." On a separate occasion, Trump's hand bruising was seen during a 30-minute photo session before a 65-minute interview with TIME. When a journalist from the publication questioned him about the condition of his right hand, Trump replied: "It's from shaking hands with thousands of people." The broadcast saw Trump tackle urgent concerns from Americans, including rising curiosity about the Jeffrey Epstein files. When questioned whether he was in agreement of greater transparency surrounding the Epstein matter, Trump vigorously applauded Attorney General Pam Bondi. ‌ He said during the conference: "The attorney general's handled that very well. She's really done a very good job." He elaborated: "And I think that when you look at it, you'll understand that. I would like to see that also. But I think the attorney general, the credibility is very important. ‌ "And, you want credible evidence or something like that. And I think the attorney general has handled it very well." Trump continued: "And in terms of the credibility of the different things that they've seen, and I would say that, you know, these files were made up by Comey, they were made up by Obama, they were made up by the Biden -- and you know, we and we went through years of that with the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, with all of the different things that we had to go through." He concluded: "We've gone through years of it, but she's handled it very well, and it's going to be up to her. Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release."
