San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish will be activated from the injured list and make his season debut Monday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Japanese star has been sidelined since spring training by right elbow inflammation.
"It really just comes down from a physical standpoint," manager Mike Shildt said before the Padres finished a series against Texas on Sunday night. "We always have an open day on the schedule for Yu Darvish to start."
Making a start Monday night will allow Darvish to make another start before the All-Star break.
Darvish, who turns 39 on Aug. 16, threw a bullpen session Saturday after throwing two simulated games against minor leaguers in the last two weeks.
Darvish missed significant time in 2024 with an elbow injury and a personal issue. He made five starts in September and finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3.31 ERA.
He pitched well in two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series, earning the win Game 2 and taking the loss in Game 5. The Padres went from having a 2-1 lead in the series to failing to score in the final 24 innings against the eventual World Series champions.

The Padres' rotation is still suffering from a number of injuries, even as Darvish returns. Joe Musgrove underwent Tommy John surgery before the season even began, and won't return until 2026. Michael King, who posted a 2.59 ERA through 10 starts, is out until August or September with a right shoulder injury. And while Dylan Cease is not injured, he's underperforming in his second year with the Padres, exacerbating their rotation issues.
The Padres are 48-41, seven games back of the Dodgers in the NL West, and effectively tied for the league's third wild card with the Giants.

Red Sox get big Masataka Yoshida update, but there's a catch

The post Red Sox get big Masataka Yoshida update, but there's a catch appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox are trying fight their way back into contention for a spot in the playoffs in the second half of the season. While they have played inconsistent baseball and been troubled by injuries in the first half of the season, they have been starting to hit the ball much better and the team is getting healthier as they approach the All-Star break. Advertisement The big news will come when 3rd baseman Alex Bregman returns to the lineup following a strain of his right quad muscle. He could be back before the All-Star break. Manager Alex Cora also expects that Masataka Yoshida will be active in the team's upcoming homestand. Yoshida has been out with a shoulder injury since the start of the season. The Red Sox manager did not specify when Yoshida will be back in the lineup. They will have back-to-back series at Fenway Park against the Colorado Rockies and the Tampa Bay Rays before the All-Star break. When Yoshida does return to the lineup, he will fill the designated hitter position. The Red Sox have been getting solid production from Rob Refsnyder and Roman Anthony at DH in recent games, so there's no need to force-feed Yoshida into the lineup. However, the Japanese import has shown a solid stroke when he has been healthy for the Red Sox in his first two seasons with the team. Yoshida slashed .289/.338/.445 with 15 home runs and 72 RBI in 2023 and he followed that with solid numbers last season. He slashed .280/.349/.415 with 10 home runs and 56 RBI. The left-handed hitting Yoshida should be an asset in the batting order when facing right-handed pitching. Advertisement Red Sox have suddenly been putting runs on the board Mandatory Credit: Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images The Red Sox have been an inconsistent offensive team throughout the majority of the season, and their ability to score runs took a dip when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last month. The Red Sox went through a six-game losing streak shortly after the trade, but they appear to have gotten over their offensive funk. They have scored 10 or more runs in three of their last seven games, and they had nine runs on the board in Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals through five innings. The Red Sox have been more competitive in the American League East and should have a good chance of getting into the Wild Card race if they can't catch the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. Advertisement While there are still questions about the pitching staff — outside of No. 1 starter Garrett Crochet and closer Aroldis Chapman — the hitting should be solid as Bregman and Yoshida prepare to return to the lineup. Aces star A'ja Wilson injures her right wrist on a drive to the basket vs. the Liberty

NEW YORK — Las Vegas star A'ja Wilson injured her right wrist on a drive to the basket Tuesday night against the New York Liberty and left the game midway through the second quarter. The three-time MVP had a quiet first half before getting hurt with 4:13 left in the period. Wilson drove down the lane and landed awkwardly. She was on the floor for a few minutes as her Aces teammates rushed over to her side. Wilson got up and walked to the Las Vegas bench to an ovation from the Barclays Center crowd. Wilson made the first of two free throws — her only point of the half. She departed with 2:22 left in the half and headed to the locker room. She missed all three of her shot attempts but had four rebounds and two assists. She didn't come out for second-half warmups and the team said she was out for the remainder of the contest. Wilson came in averaging 21.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Earlier in the night, Wilson was selected by Caitlin Clark to play on her team at the All-Star Game on July 19 in Indianapolis.

Reds lefty Andrew Abbott named NL All-Star, replacing Dodgers' Yamamoto

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott is an All-Star after all. Abbott, who's 7-1 with a 2.15 ERA in 15 starts, was named as a replacement Tuesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who's ineligible to pitch since he's scheduled to start Sunday. It's the first All-Star nod for the 26-year-old Abbott, who was informed during Tuesday night's game against the Miami Marlins and high-fived and hugged teammates in the dugout. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz is Cincinnati's other All-Star. Abbott's ERA would be the fourth best in the majors if he had pitched enough innings to qualify. A pitcher must have at least one inning pitched per games played by his team. The Reds have played 92 games and Abbott has tossed 83 2/3 innings since making his season debut on April 12 after suffering a left shoulder strain in spring training. ___
