Wycombe's previous encounters against the seven new teams who will play in League One

Yahoo29-05-2025
Following AFC Wimbledon's 1-0 victory against Walsall in the League Two play-off final, all of the teams for the 2025/26 League One season have been confirmed.
Coming from the division below, Wycombe Wanderers will face Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City and Port Vale as well as the original Dons, whilst Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town have arrived following their relegations from the Championship.
So, let us look back at when the Chairboys each faced these seven times in the league.
Wycombe Wanderers 1-3 Luton Town, April 10, 2021
This fixture came at the back end of Wanderers' maiden season in the Championship, which saw them suffer relegation back down to the third tier in May of that year.
Against the Hatters, Anis Mehmeti scored a first-half penalty to put Wanderers 1-0 up, but on 57 minutes, the game completely changed.
Centre back and that year's Player of the Season, Josh Knight, was sent off for deliberately denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
Luton gathered momentum and scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to secure all three points in South Buckinghamshire.
Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Wycombe Wanderers, December 29, 2022
In what was the club's final league game of 2022, Wycombe travelled to Home Park to face Plymouth, who had beaten them 1-0 earlier in the season.
Dan Scarr, once of Wanderers, scored the only goal of the game as Argyle continued to strive in the top two whilst Wycombe were battling in and around the play-offs.
However, the game is best remembered for a concerning incident surrounding then-Chairboys striker Tjay De Barr.
The Gibraltarian collapsed at the full-time whistle and was taken to hospital but was later discharged.
He had taken a knock to the chest and began to cough up blood after the match had ended.
Cardiff City 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers, April 24, 2021
The penultimate away league outing of Wycombe's Championship season, Wanderers knew that a win against the Bluebirds gave them a realistic chance of staying up.
Kieffer Moore put the hosts ahead before Joe Jacobson, a Cardiff fan growing up, scored a penalty to bring the Chairboys level.
But Moore's second late on, despite Will Vaulks' red card, gave the Welsh side the win.
AFC Wimbledon 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers, April 18, 2022
Wycombe and Wimbledon have played each other a couple of times in the EFL Trophy since 2022, with the point on Easter Monday playing a huge part in their promotion push that year.
Jack Rudoni put the Dons ahead before Adebayo Akinfenwa's late header, which was his last for the club against his former side, rescued a point.
Wimbledon were relegated that year whilst Wycombe reached the play-off final, losing to Sunderland.
Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Bradford City, February 2, 2019
Despite Wycombe playing Bradford twice in cup matches during 2023/24 season, you have to go back to the 2018/19 campaign when the Chairboys faced the Bantams in the league.
The encounter at Adams Park that day finished goalless, with the Yorkshire outfit suffering relegation to League Two that year.
Wycombe avoided the drop with an end-of-season rally, with three wins from their last six games.
Port Vale 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers, April 16, 2024
This mid-week fixture from just over a year ago saw David Wheeler put Wycombe a goal up inside four minutes before Ethan Chislett equalised moments after the break.
Then, on a ramping run forward, on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers man Nigel Lonwjik scored the winner with minutes remaining.
Vale were relegated that year but only spent one season in League Two before a return to League One.
Strikes from Garath McCleary and Anis Mehmeti easily wrapped up the win for Wycombe against Doncaster in the most recent clash between the two teams.
Wanderers reached the play-off final that year whilst Donny were relegated to League Two.
They would remain in the division for three years.

‘It's weird but also insanely cool': McLaren's Lando Norris on the dream and dilemma fueling his F1 title ambitions

It's a unique position to be in. How do you work alongside a colleague for the greater good of your team and simultaneously vie with them to win the ultimate prize in motorsport? That unenviable dilemma is one that McLaren's Lando Norris is trying to navigate as one of the most tantalizing Formula One title races in recent memory plays out against teammate Oscar Piastri. With both drivers seeking their maiden world titles and just 15 points separating the two ahead of the midpoint of the 2025 season at this weekend's British Grand Prix, Norris' conscience is clear. His eyes are very much set on fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a world champion. 'I've always been very (accommodating) of having a teammate and also always realizing I want to beat everyone,' the 25-year-old tells CNN Sport's Amanda Davies. 'It doesn't matter what color car they're in. It doesn't matter if they're my teammate or not. In racing you want to be at the top. We've always made it very clear that we want to beat each other, but understand how we work together as a team and how we can help the team move forward. 'We know we're competitors, we know we're rivals … I think we both understand what it takes.' Although in recent seasons the drivers' championship has been a largely foregone conclusion thanks to the dominant brilliance of Max Verstappen, the 2025 season has been anything but that. The lead has ebbed and flowed on several occasions, largely passed between the two McLaren drivers in an engaging game of cat and mouse. Norris, who finished runner-up last year, may have started out the season as the favorite to end Verstappen's run of four consecutive titles, but he's so far been eclipsed by his younger teammate, Piastri, who's won five races to Norris' three. But just as the Australian was looking to pull away from his title rival, the Brit's commanding win at last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix has once again seen him reel in his teammate. It now looks increasingly like a two-horse race with Red Bull's Verstappen trailing Norris and Piastri by 46 and 61 points respectively. While McLaren boss Zak Brown has dismissed that suggestion, insisting that up to five drivers – the McLaren duo, Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles LeClerc and Mercedes' George Russell – are in the fight, Norris believes that just being in this position is far beyond his wildest expectations. 'I still find it weird to think I'm fighting for the world championship,' he says. 'I'm fighting for what I once dreamed of, what I once saw on TV, which is weird but also insanely cool at the same time.' This campaign has so far been a season of firsts for Norris, with maiden wins at the season-opening Australian Prix and, most recently, the famous circuit at Monaco. For the Brit, though, there's no denying that a grand prix victory on home turf at the historic Silverstone track is the one item he's desperate to tick off the bucket list having twice before finished on the podium – third last season and runner-up in 2023. Can he go one step further this year? 'I said if I could swap any race wins to win one, it would be Silverstone,' Norris says. 'Your home race is the one you just feel most proud of. It's the one that always brings the biggest smile to you because it's your fans, your family, your friends are there. 'I watched the race (on TV) … and you think: 'Oh, what's it like?' Then you stand there and you have the team there and you get that sense of pride and you're there performing for your team. 'I don't know what it's going to be like (to win). Hopefully I'll find out sooner rather than later … because it's the one that I get most excited for.' Success this weekend would not only accomplish a lifetime ambition, but also further elevate Norris' burgeoning fandom at home. It's something he's not taking for granted. 'I don't think it's normal for a human to get so much support and so many cheers. … I don't think you get used to it. It's what I struggle to get used to the most,' he says. 'In some ways, you can get a little bit used to the winning. … That's the easy bit of the job for me and it always will be. I think Silverstone will always be the weekend I look forward to the most every single year.'

Hull handed transfer embargo until 2027

Hull avoided relegation on goal difference last season, finishing 21st in the Championship [Getty Images] Hull City have been handed a transfer embargo for three transfer windows - which means they will not be able to pay a fee for a player until January 2027. There are concerns over the club's finances after they were late making transfer payments to Aston Villa for the loan of winger Louie Barry last season. Advertisement That debt has now been settled but the delay was too long for the English Football League, who are set to confirm the Championship club's transfer ban on Friday. City do have a right to appeal against the decision but BBC Radio Humberside understands the club owe money to a number of additional creditors, including other clubs for previous transfers. BBC Radio Humberside have approached Hull City for a comment. The news comes in a week when owner Acun Ilicali told supporters at a question and answer session that the Tigers do not have money problems. Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside on Monday, Ilicali also dismissed concerns and questions about the club's mounting debt - that in the last set of accounts showed losses in excess of £60m. Advertisement "We don't owe any money to anybody - the club owes money to me and I am the owner," Ilicali said. "I am spending from my pocket but we have extremely good players in the squad. I can say to the fans do not be under stress, we are fine."

More fixture changes as Watford picked for two TV games

Watford have found out which of their matches have been moved for TV. Picture: PA (Image: Anthony Devlin/PA) Watford face more fixture changes and odd kick-off times after the latest round of TV picks were announced. The Hornets had already found out their opening day Championship clash at Charlton Athletic had been moved to a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, August 9. Advertisement But the release of all the fixtures up until the end of September means more disruption, with a further two away games altered. The first will bring an earlier start for many, with the away trip to Swansea City on Saturday, August 23, brought forward to a 12.30pm kick-off. The second is at least close by but has been moved by two full days. Watford will now play at Millwall on Monday, September 22 at 8pm. The EFL say the TV choices for all matches scheduled to be played prior to the end of the third round of the FA Cup, in January 2026, will be announced by July 31. They will then have the games chosen to the end of February released to the public by November 7. They claim by giving more notice, it will allow fans "to plan with certainty when making travel and hotel arrangements".
