Orange Tango's 'happy slapper' TV ad star met tragic end after banned craze
Sometimes an advert captures our imagination so brilliantly, like the heartwarming John Lewis Christmas commercials that people look forward to every year. But in other moments, adverts spectacularly misfire – remember the 1992 'happy slapper' Tango advert with its infamous line, "You know when you've been Tango'd"?
The notorious ad depicted a trio of youngsters on a street corner, one enjoying a can of Tango, with a voiceover from Outnumbered star Hugh Dennis alongside sports commentator Ray Wilkins. They narrated a slow-mo replay of the Tango drinker getting slap around the face by a bright orange man sporting a bald head and a nappy. The slap was intended to represent the intense hit of the drink's flavour.
Marking the launch of Tango's new comedic campaign, the advert inadvertently sparked a rash of copycat slapping incidents in playground s, allegedly causing children to sustain burst ear drums – leading to the immediate ban of the commercial.
Relatively unknown talent Peter Greeves took on the role of the Tango man, having worked in some films and TV series such as Muppet Treasure Island, Nuns On The Run, Birds Of A Feather, Closer To Home, and Men Behaving Badly, reports OK!.
Recounting the ad's casting, art director Trevor Robinson shared reflections with The Guardian, saying: "Somehow we also convinced serious up-and-coming actor Peter Geeves to play the Orange Man. We knew as soon as he auditioned – the way he ran with his stomach sticking out – that he'd be perfect."
He elaborated on the original concept for the advertisement, revealing: "At first, we thought the ad would have a fat orange genie who ran up and kicked the Tango drinker on the bum. Of course, the advertising authority at the time, the BACC, said no way. We got the script cleared by changing the kick to a pleasant, Morecambe and Wise -style slap on the face. I think it's safe to say the little slap got a bit out of hand."
He also recounted learning about the troublesome trend it sparked, saying: "I remember having a conversation with a doctor, who complained that kids were 'Tangoing' each other at the cost of perforated ear drums."
Peter Geeves seemingly vanished from the public eye in 1996 as he quit acting to establish a micro-brewery with his son, providing Yorkshire pubs with their own local brews. The pair's Tunnel Mouth was even named champion beer at a breweries festival. However, he did appear in five episodes of police drama The Bill, an episode of Doctors and two episodes of EastEnders, where he played Len.
In a chat with ITV back in 2006, Peter nostalgically recalled his stint in the Tango advert, quipping: "I was asked to first of all run around, then run around and scream, then run around screaming topless, it was at that point I thought 'aye-aye, this isn't the normal run of the mill advert'".
Sadly, Peter's IMDB page reveals the news that he passed away on 31 December 2022, at the age of 67, leaving behind a wife, Suzanne, and two children.

This midi dress that is perfect for channelling the royal's style The final weekend for Wimbledon provided us with plenty of summer style inspiration. Kate Middleton appeared at the tennis tournament on Saturday (July 12), looking stunning as ever in pale yellow midi dress, and it prompted us to look back on some of her previous looks for the sports event. While most of us don't have a royal budget to splurge on the Princess of Wales' exact ensembles, there's still a way to capture her style without emptying our wallets. Over at Next, a Roman polka-dot midi dress is perfect for replicating her look, particularly one outfit from Wimbledon in 2022. The best part? It comes with a purse-friendly price tag of £44. The Navy Polka Dot Ruched Sleeve Midi Dress has received glowing reviews on the Roman website, where it's now sold out, boasting an impressive 4.9 out of 5-star rating. It comes in three colourways, including Kate's preferred navy shade, with sizes ranging from 10 to 20. Featuring the Princess' favourite polka dot print, Roman's woven midi dress is sure to become a staple in wardrobes during the warmer months, reports OK!. Designed with a feminine V-neckline, this Kate-inspired piece features short, ruched sleeves for an elegant and timeless look. This number also features charming button details, which add a casual vibe without taking away from its sophistication and chic wearability. The thick waistband is crafted to create flattering pleats, making it a truly stunning piece. The fit-and-flare silhouette hugs the waist for that enviable figure-skimming appearance, whilst the voluminous skirt introduces a dose of Princess Kate's emblematic elegant flair. Shoppers can style this effortlessly chic midi-length piece with a pair of heeled wedges. For a more laid-back look, add trainers and make it a classic Wimbledon style. Roman fans love the dress as one delighted buyer gushed: "This is my absolute favourite dress of all time. It fits beautifully, is very flattering and is extremely comfortable." Another enthusiast praises effusively: " Lovely style, length and material. Ideal for any occasion." A shopper bought it for a special event and shared: "I love this dress. I bought it for a spring wedding. It's a perfect fit. I bought my usual size 14. I've added a modesty panel as it was a wee bit low at the front for me." But one removed a star from their review, explaining: "Love the fit of the dress and the material but the sleeves were incredibly tight. I waited for ages for a bigger size to become available but it never did (and I'm not sure if the sleeves would have fit much better anyway) so I made some alterations to the sleeves myself." Another contented client celebrates the garment's sophisticated allure: "Elegant, sophisticated, and feminine. The fabric is light and breezy. I love it." Those seeking similar styles can head straight to Phase Eight. There, the Jenna Spot Wrap Midaxi Dress in Kate's preferred navy and white combo is on sale for £62.10, down from £139, with sizes available up to a UK26. ITV The Chase star Anne Hegerty addresses co-star's blunt remark after 'beating him'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Television star Anne Hegerty, known for her role on The Chase, revealed that she was asked a rather direct question by one of her ITV colleagues during a quiz competition. Anne was chatting with Clayton Bjelan on his podcast Towards Understanding about her career when she recalled an encounter with a fellow quizzer who informed her about a new show he was working on for ITV. The Chase star, celebrating her 67th birthday today, shared: "[One] month I went to the British end of the world championships in which I did pretty well and I went to the bar to get a drink before lunch. "As I stepped inside the bar I was greeted by what I've since described as the largest man I've ever seen in my life and he said 'Hi! My name's Mark Labbett, you beat me last month, who are you?'" "He said, 'I've just finished recording the pilot series for this show' and he described the format." Since joining The Chase, the very show Mark had filmed the pilot series for as one of the Chasers in 2010, Anne has won over viewers and remained a staple on the programme. She joined The Chase a year after Mark's debut in 2009 and they have both since become recognisable figures in the public eye. She also participated in I'm A Me Out Of Here! and spoke about the effects of an unexpected rise to fame, which involves a great deal of social interaction. Speaking to Best magazine, she confessed: "There are times when I would like to have a less social life than I do. The thing is, I could say 'No' more, so really, that's on me. I'd quite like it if things were not so busy, but then if they weren't so busy, I'd worry." (Image: ITV) Besides her role on the British game show The Chase, Anne participates in the Australian version alongside Mark and has opened up about how being autistic has impacted her personal relationships. During The Chasers Road Trip, she discussed a four-month relationship, expressing her struggle with romantic expectations. She explained: "He was a lovely bloke but I am just not good with the sort of attention that people need." Talking OK! Magazine, she elaborated on her experiences of love and relationships. She said: "I fall in love with historical or fictional characters. People I can put a bit of distance between. "I get overwhelmed in the presence of actual people and everything shuts down. I've found that with sex, too. It's like I can't be fully in it. That much intimacy, I almost zone out."
