Eight years on, construction work of overhead tanks for 24x7 water supply project yet to be completed
Pune: Eight years after its start, the construction of overhead water tanks for PMC's 24x7 water supply project is still progressing slowly. Only 25 out of the 82 tanks to be constructed for this project have been commissioned. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The civic body claimed to have completed construction of 66 tanks but said 41 are not in use because of issues pertaining to supply lines. According to civic officials, the land acquisition proved to be a taxing process, which caused delay in the project. "The civic administration is generating funds for the project. The funds will be used for building connecting lines between water tanks and taps of end users. The administration has planned to speed up the works," said Nandkishor Jagtap, the head of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s water supply department. The civic body will spend around Rs 280 crore on building these tanks. The capacity of the tanks ranges from 20 lakh litres to 40 lakh litres. "The civic administration is not showing the will to complete the project in time. The project is aimed at providing 24x7 water to citizens. But the civic body has gone back on its promise and is promoting it as an equitable water supply project," said Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizens' group. "Residents of merged areas are waiting for water for years. The water tanks have been built, but these are not able to provide water as allied infrastructure is absent. If the infrastructure is not built, the water tanks will go to waste," said Shrirang Chavan of Haveli Taluka Kriti Samiti, a citizens' group from merged areas. Civic officials said that work of construction of 20 overhead tanks in 34 merged areas has been prioritized to resolve the problem of water scarcity. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The water storage capacity of these added areas will increase by around 3.5 crore litres after the construction of these tanks. The tanks will be built in areas like Ambegaon, Bavdhan, Sus, Mahalunge, Jambhulwadi, Wagholi, and Lohegaon. Twenty amenity spaces have been identified for construction of these facilities. A civic official said that construction of tanks is a major component of the project. About 700 of the 1,060-km distribution line has been laid, and the remaining work will begin in the next fiscal, an official said. Nearly 70% of the 3.14 lakh metre installations for residential use has been completed. The official said Rs 1,471 crore of the total project allocation of Rs 2,048 crore has been spent. Approximately 75% of the project has been completed. The remaining portions will be finished by Dec 2025, they said. Of the planned 141 water metre zones in the city, 72 are slated to be operational. The remaining work will be completed by March 2026.

Katara's nephew held in SI exam leak case
Jaipur: In a fresh arrest in the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam 2021 paper leak case, Special Operations Group (SOG) Tuesday arrested Vijay Kumar Damor (33), nephew of arrested former RPSC member Babu Lal Katara, for copying and memorising the leaked question papers and appearing in the exam himself. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Additional director general (SOG) VK Singh said Damor, a native of Vagdhari village in Dungarpur, was staying at Katara's official residence in Ajmer at the time of the exam. Katara, who was then an RPSC member, was tasked with preparing the answer keys for the SI exam. According to SOG, nearly 35 days before the examination, Katara brought home the question papers for all three days and had Damor meticulously copy the questions and answers into a lined register. "He wrote the sets so many times that he memorised all questions and their answers," said Singh, adding that Damor was previously also arrested in the senior teacher exam 2022 paper leak case. Damor applied for the SI exam in 2021, cleared the written paper using the leaked content, but failed to qualify in the physical test. Sources said that after preparing the master register, multiple copies were made and circulated among other accused. The original was retained by Damor for his own preparation. Investigators suspect the same leaked papers were also handed to govt school teacher Kundan Kumar Pandya, who was arrested last month. Katara, arrested in 2023 for leaking the Senior Teacher Recruitment Exam 2022 for Rs 60 lakh to a cheating syndicate, is already in jail in connection with the same SI paper leak. Another nephew, Rahul, is also under the scanner in the case, Singh added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The arrest of Damor brings to light how leaked exam papers were not just sold, but also used by family members of key officials involved in the recruitment process. So far, 113 people have been arrested in connection with the SI exam paper leak case.

Minor among four arrested for series of robberies targeting pedestrians in Koregaon Park and Wanowrie areas
Pune: The Koregaon Park police on July 4 arrested three men and detained a 15-year-old boy on the charge of robbing four pedestrians of their cellphones in the early hours recently. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police recovered four cellphones, a billhook, and a moped without a registration number plate, collectively worth Rs 1.5 lakh, from the suspects identified as Siddharth More (19), Krishna alias Vicky Dhangar (28), Aryan Waghmare (19), and their minor accomplice, all residents of Tadiwala Road. Senior inspector and investigating officer Shrikant Chavan on Tuesday said three cases of cellphone snatching were registered with Koregaon Park police on July 3, and the fourth incident was reported from the Wanowrie area approximately two weeks earlier. "After analysing the complainants' description of the four men and the vehicles used in the robberies as well as examining CCTV footage, we followed certain leads and apprehended two men following a tip-off that they were riding a moped without a number plate," Chavan said. "During questioning, the duo admitted to their involvement in a series of robbery cases and disclosed the names of their accomplices, including the minor boy," he said. Subsequently, police arrested their accomplice and detained the minor boy. "We recovered the phones from them," Chavan said. Commenting on the modus operandi, the police officer said the suspects, all school dropouts and unemployed, know each other and are addicted to drinking liquor. "They decided to commit a series of phone snatchings by targeting pedestrians or two-wheeler riders to earn fast cash during the early morning hours because it is easier to commit such crimes," he said, adding that one more moped used in the crime would be recovered. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Senior inspector Sunil Thopate told TOI, "Our detection branch team detected the phone snatching cases reported in front of MSEDCL office near Nowrosjee Wadia College, South Main Road and Erison Railway Training Institute on priority. One of the robbery cases reported was of extreme brutality, wherein the suspects, riding two mopeds, intercepted a security guard on a bike and pushed him. The suspects then attacked the guard, pressed on his chest with their legs, threatened him with the billhook, and snatched his phone. " Three suspects initially arrested in one of the robbery cases were sent to magisterial custody at Yerawada jail. "We would soon arrest them in two other robbery cases. The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which ordered his detention in a correctional home," Thopate added.
