Green finds form as Australia eye series win in Windies
Australia ended a rain-interrupted day three on 7-221, with Alex Carey (26no) and captain Pat Cummins (4no) still there when stumps were called due to bad light in Grenada on Saturday.
With the pressure mounting on their faltering top order, having slumped to 2-12 following the dismissals of openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja late on day two, Smith (71) and Green (52) stepped up.
Green has struggled since returning from more than 12 months out due to a serious back injury for last month's World Test Championship final defeat to South Africa.
Batting in the coveted No.3 spot, the 26-year-old had managed just 48 runs across his first five innings.
But Green looked assured at the crease until he chopped on to his stumps, a ball after reaching seventh Test half-century, leaving him furious.
'I've batted at No.4 for WA, being one spot (above) is no different,' Green told reporters.
'Hopefully my output can be a little bit better than it has been, but today was a nice sign that things are hopefully trending well.
'You always need an innings here and there to get you back and going, hopefully today was one of those.'
Smith, who was dismissed cheaply for three in the first innings just 20 days after returning from a nasty finger dislocation, was chanceless as Australia hunt a series-clinching victory at St George's.
But Smith was out lbw to Justin Greaves (2-22) when he appeared to be storming towards a 37th Test century.
Travis Head (39) helped maintain the impressive Australian run rate but fell to Shamar Joseph for the second time in the match.
Earlier, nightwatchman Nathan Lyon did well early on to support Green, eating up valuable overs as the pair sought to blunt the new ball.
Spin-king Lyon had batted an hour and 47 minutes, using up 33 balls, before departing to a catch from John Campbell at third slip off Alzarri Joseph.
His resistance made it easier for Green to settle in the first session and the West Australian looked determined to take on the responsibility of holding the innings together.
Pat Cummins' Australia side are looking to claim a series-clinching victory at the National Stadium in St George's, a venue in which they've never before played a Test.
The pitch is still tricky to bat on, ensuring any lead close to 300, combined with Australia's star-studded bowling attack, will make it difficult for the West Indies to chase down in the fourth innings.
'He was batting on a different wicket, clearly a class above. That's a tough wicket,' Green said of Smith's innings.

That's a lot of pressure on a young fella.' Even though Galvin joined on a big money contract worth over $2 million, that shouldn't mean he is guaranteed a place in the best 17 according to Fox League's Greg Alexander. The Panthers legend said that at the moment, he can't find a space for Galvin in the Bulldogs 17. 'What would your Bulldogs side be in Round 27. Let's fast forward two rounds,' Alexander said on Fox League. 'My answer is Sexton at halfback, Burton at five-eighth and Bailey Hayward on the bench. I don't know if I could find a spot for Lachlan Galvin. 'You probably can carry Galvin and Hayward but because Hayward does such a good job in the halves, he can play at the back of the scrum. 'At the moment, and how they are in their development of their career, I have Hayward ahead of Galvin because Hayward covers dummy-half and the halves. Not just covers the halves, but does a damn good job in the halves.'

AFL 2025: Melbourne forward Jake Melksham on his out-of-contract status
In-form Melbourne forward Jake Melksham is in 'no rush' to sign on for another season. Melksham is poised to challenge his career-best goal tally of 32 in 2018, having kicked 20 in 12 games in the final year of his contract this season. Melbourne is yet to hold any serious conversations with Melksham about his future and he is unsure if he would even accept the offer of an extension. 'I haven't made that decision up in my mind. Once we talk about it, sit down, we'll start to discuss the nuances of it all,' Melksham, in his 16th AFL season, said. 'I'll have a chat with my family as well. I've got young kids that play sport on weekends – I think my son has played 10 games and I've been to two of them. 'He would probably like me at a few more of his games, but in saying that he does like coming to watch his dad at the 'G as well. 'They're all just little things we've got to talk about. As I said, I haven't thought about much of it all to date. 'We've got eight weeks, no rush, I'm not going anywhere – I'll either be at Melbourne or I won't.' Melksham has grown in a leadership capacity in recent seasons, developing into an on-field coach of sorts. But when the curtain does fall on his playing career, Melksham says he is more looking to chase lost time away from footy than a seat in the coaches' box. 'At certain stages when I had my knee and I was putting time into that each week with the group, I enjoyed (coaching),' he said. 'I have a few other off-field interests I like as well that I am doing in parallel with my career at the moment. 'I think when the time comes, when I do finish up, I will stick to those. 'When you finish footy you want to get some of your life back; coaching is probably double the hours we do as players, we have it pretty good.'

‘Racing the clock': Yeo concedes he may not play in 2025

West Coast veteran Elliot Yeo has conceded he may not play a game in 2025, admitting he's 'racing the clock' to be fit before the end of the home and away season. And with only seven games remaining for the Eagles, Yeo said it might not be worth the risk, with the club all but certain to claim the wooden spoon. Yeo, who is contracted until the end of 2027 after signing a three-year extension last year, has not played a game this season on the back of knee and ankle injuries sustained in the pre-season. The 31-year-old had a second surgery on his troublesome ankle in May, which delayed his return again. Now, the two-time club champion has accepted he might not play this year. 'I'm racing the clock now to get fit,' Yeo told 96Fm. 'That's the big thing and then once you can get fit, it's like 'all right, how many games do we have left. 'And then is the juice worth the squeeze? Depending on the severity of where I'm at with my load and program and everything. 'So there's a few things I've got to tick off as well, I'm still a fair bit off in terms of getting distance in the legs and change of direction and a few other things as well. 'I'm fighting the clock.' Yeo said a decision on whether he does return will depend on the next couple of weeks. The Eagles latest injury report, from Tuesday last week, indicated he remained at least 3-4 weeks away but Yeo was not willing to declare he would meet that. 'This whole year, rehab hasn't been the most linear process for me,' Yeo said. 'Fingers crossed but it's hard to say 'yeah, I'd love to be back' and all this stuff because it's been a bit of a rollercoaster this year.' Elliot Yeo at Eagles training.
