Best second-hand cars available for under £5k including iconic model nicknamed ‘the billion-dollar motor'

The Sun12-05-2025
THE BEST value second-hand cars for Brits looking to spend £5000 on a motor have been revealed.
Autocar's top 30 list contained three glamorous vehicles which come in at a bargain price and one is nicknamed 'the billion dollar motor'.

The list was compiled by finding second-hand alternatives to Autocar's top 50 car list.
When it wasn't possible to find an exact match for each car, a substitute was made for the closest possible model.
Where some of the new models come in at a staggering £96,000, a second-hand car won't break the bank.
Dacia Logan MCV
Offering over 573 litres of boot space with the seats up and a staggering 1518 litres with them down, the Dacia Logan MCV prioritises practicality over flashy gimmicks.
It costs just over £2000 for a 2015 Logan MCV, making it the best-value car relative to its age on Autocar's second-hand list.
The Dacia Logan MCV is also very spacious inside and is designed with fuel efficiency in mind - which helps keeps costs down and journeys longer.
This particular model is the alternative to the more expensive Dacia Jogger, which made Autocar's best car list.

Mercedes S-Class W140
Coming in at a close second place is the Mercedes S-Class W140 which is nicknamed the 'billion-dollar motor'.
The fancy car takes its name from the lengthy pre-production process which preceded its release, as Mercedes poured so much money into its development.
However, the car manufacturer's gamble paid off as over half a million models were sold.
Although they are a rarity at car dealerships, the luxury cars come in at a reasonable £5000.
Rover 200 BRM
The final vehicle which costs under £5000 on Autocar's list is the Rover 200 BRM.
Known for its brightly painted hot patch, the car is decorated with a stunning racing style - with sleek leather seats and easy-to-navigate on-board technology.
It costs just £2000 to bag yourself a restored Rover 200 BRM, making it one of the more affordable options on the market.
Top 10 best second-hand cars
Autocar have released a list of the best value second-hand cars.
The list was compiled using the magazine's original best cars list and then finding a similar alternative to each vehicle.
1. Porsche 911 (991)
2. Skoda Superb Estate
3. Toyota GT86
4. BMW M340D Touring
5. Dacia Logan MCV
6. Mazda MX-5
7. Alpine A110
8. Hyundai i30 N
9. Porsche Taycan
10. Caterham Seven
The list was released just days after one second-hand vehicle sold for over £100,000.
Belonging to former Prime Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the 1936 Rolls Royce Phantom III Touring Limousine is a piece of history.
It was fitted with an electric cigar lighter by the late politician and was painted in a glamorous British Racing green.
The sale followed the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, where one of Churchill's speeches was read aloud during the celebrations.

Teenager Antonelli paying price for 'wrong steps' by Mercedes

LONDON, July 29 (Reuters) - Mercedes have made mistakes in developing their Formula One car and teenage Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli's struggles are a consequence of that, according to technical director James Allison. Antonelli, 18, finished third in Canada in June for his first F1 podium but has since failed to score. He has had two retirements since Montreal as well as 17th in a sprint race in Belgium last Saturday and then 16th in Sunday's main grand prix. The Italian, who took a sprint pole in Miami and is the sport's youngest ever race leader, has retired four times in the last seven rounds and admitted in Belgium he was lacking confidence in the car and not driving as he would like. "I think he's, like the rest of us, massively fed up with a string of results that are well below what we were collectively achieving earlier in the year," Allison said in a Belgian race debrief on Tuesday. "I hope he takes some solace from the fact that we tell him, and it's demonstrably a fact, that we have taken the wrong steps with the car, making our team less competitive, and that he is paying the price for that, as is George (Russell). "If the car isn't where it needs to be, then it will be a struggle getting through the qualifying stages in your rookie season in F1." Allison said it was "utterly clear" to everyone that the car needed to be better and Antonelli's fortunes would improve when it was. "Hopefully he's listening to us as we say those reassuring words because we absolutely know that he is putting in the effort on his side of that bargain," he added. Mercedes are third overall, 28 points behind second-placed Ferrari, with one win by Russell in Canada. Russell has been on the podium five times and is fourth overall with 157 points to Antonelli's 63. Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, whose seat Antonelli took when the Briton moved to Ferrari, showed his support for the Italian after Saturday qualifying at Spa. "He was telling me to keep my head up, and that it's normal to have bad weekends, and to just keep believing," the Italian told reporters. Hamilton told Sky Sports television he could not imagine what the rookie was going through. "He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18... he hadn't even had his driving licence when he first started racing," he said.

Lewis Hamilton comforted Kimi Antonelli after tricky Belgian GP

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli received advice from Lewis Hamilton during a challenging weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. Antonelli, 18, has experienced a difficult run of Formula 1 races since his podium finish in Canada, including retiring from two Grands Prix and finishing 16th at Spa. Hamilton visited Antonelli in the Mercedes motorhome and encouraged him to 'keep his head up' and 'keep believing' after Antonelli was emotional following Q1 elimination. Hamilton, who also started his F1 career with a top team, expressed support for Antonelli, acknowledging the pressure on an 18-year-old in such a position. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that retaining Antonelli and George Russell is now his 'priority' for the next season.

Mercedes has nearly 1,000bhp, courtesy of Brabus

You're looking at the Brabus 1000, a modified version of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe that comes with a collection of styling and technical upgrades, and some colossal performance figures. Brabus has not announced any prices for its new two-door flagship, but given that the car on which it's based already costs well over £185,000, we suspect it'll be another big number. Advertisement - Article continues below The company's modifications to the Porsche 911 rival run deep, including a heavy update of AMG's twin-turbocharged V8 engine. It has been enlarged from 4.0 to 4.5 litres, plus two new turbochargers with higher boost pressures have been fitted. However, the car's headline power figure isn't derived from just a V8 engine, because Brabus has based the 1000 on the GT 63 S E Performance, which pairs a 197bhp electrified rear axle with the traditional petrol engine. As such, this would mean the V8 engine develops around 800bhp in order to create the total output of 1000hp (987bhp), from which the car's name is derived. This is the same powertrain used in the four-door Brabus Rocket 1000, which produces 1,820Nm of torque. However, to protect the nine-speed automatic transmission, it is limited to 'only' 1,620Nm in the new model. Brabus quotes a 0-62mph time of 2.6 seconds for the 1000, which is about 0.2 seconds faster than the AMG model it's based on, and its top speed is electronically limited to 198mph. The 1000 also features a range of styling upgrades, most of which are made from carbon fibre. These include new splitters, spoilers and wings, while the grille also features new inserts on either side, plus there's a new set of staggered 21 and 22-inch wheels. There's no detail on any updates to the chassis, aside from a new height-adjustable suspension. How this works with AMG's hydraulically-interconnected dampers, if they are still fitted, remains to be seen. If, however, you're in the market for a high performance AMG model, make sure to check out Auto Express's online marketplace . Brabus has also been busy inside the car, reupholstering much of the cabin and replacing many of the existing trim pieces with either gloss carbon or red anodised aluminium.
