Bye-Bye Frosty Ties? 2 Decades After Singur, Mamata Banerjee, Tata Chief Meet

NDTV16 hours ago
Kolkata:
Mamata Banerjee fought the CPI(M) regime in West Bengal - in the Assembly, in the court of public opinion, and on the streets - for decades, but the pivotal moment in her struggle came when she led the protests against the alleged forcible acquisition of farmland for the Tata Motors plant in the state's Singur. The 2006 protests, and similar ones in Nandigram the following year, are believed to have catapulted her to power in Bengal in 2011, ending 34 straight years of CPI(M) rule.
Before that, in 2008, then Tata Group and Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata announced that the company was moving the plant, which would produce his dream affordable car, the Nano, to Gujarat. He also blamed the Trinamool Congress chief for the move, saying, "I think Ms Banerjee pulled the trigger."
Ms Banerjee offered a terse reaction. "It is an unfortunate comment of an individual blaming me for the pullout decision at Singur," she had said at the time.
Nearly two decades later, it appears the perceived animosity between her and the group is well and truly over.
For the first time since she became chief minister in 2011, Ms Banerjee met Tata Sons and Tata Motors Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Kolkata on Wednesday. The conversation, according to the Trinamool Congress, centred on "deepening the Tata Group's presence in the state".
Posting photos of the meeting, the Trinamool Congress wrote on X, "Smt. @MamataOfficial hosted Shri Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group, for a constructive dialogue on Bengal's industrial growth and emerging opportunities."

The thaw appeared to be underway earlier this year as well, when Ms Banerjee had said at the Bengal Global Business Summit that she had spoken to Mr Chandrasekaran over the phone and he had told her that the group was keen on "coming to" Bengal.
"I have also requested him to start direct flights from Kolkata to Europe, and he did not say no, his voice sounded positive," she had said, referring to Mr Chandrasekaran, who is also the chairman of Air India.

Auto industry likely to post weak Q1 FY26 results amid global headwinds

India's automobile industry is headed for a modest Q1 FY26 earnings season, weighed down by global volatility, rising commodity costs, and geopolitical disruptions, according to a recent analysis by Kotak Institutional Equities, reports Financial Express. Automakers and component manufacturers are expected to report sluggish revenue growth and margin compression, with the overall outlook marked by weak exports, elevated discounts, and uncertainty over rare earth material supplies from China. Muted growth for OEMs, JLR faces steep decline Kotak estimates auto companies under its coverage will post just 1 per cent YoY revenue growth in Q1 FY26. Excluding Tata Motors, that figure improves slightly to 6 per cent. Production volumes remained largely flat across the PV, 2W, CV, and tractor segments. Higher average selling prices (ASPs) offered some cushion, but steep discounts and weak global demand undermined profitability. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are likely to see EBITDA margins shrink by 260 basis points YoY, though the impact narrows to 80 bps without Tata Motors. The sharp decline is attributed to rising marketing spends, input costs—especially tyres—and pricing pressures. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is expected to bear the brunt, with EBITDA likely plunging over 50 per cent YoY, hurt by U.S. tariffs, poor demand in Europe and North America, and a strategic halt in U.S. shipments. JLR's wholesale volumes dropped 10.7 per cent YoY, with retail sales slipping 15.1 per cent. Mixed fortunes for domestic players and auto component makers While JLR struggles, Tata's domestic PV business may log 9 per cent YoY EBITDA growth, supported by Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Mahindra & Mahindra could post a robust 24 per cent YoY growth, driven by solid SUV and tractor sales. In contrast, Maruti Suzuki's margins may shrink due to discounting and higher operational costs. Among two-wheeler makers, TVS Motor stands out with an expected 31 per cent jump in EBITDA, benefiting from a strong product mix and operating leverage. Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto are expected to show marginal declines or flat earnings amid input cost pressures. The auto components sector may post 6.6 per cent revenue growth, but face margin compression of 60 basis points. Tyre companies like Apollo Tyres could report a 9 per cent earnings decline, while MRF and CEAT may log marginal gains. Bearing manufacturers are expected to perform better on the back of industrial demand. Global component players such as Bharat Forge and Sona Comstar face a rough quarter, with expected revenue dips of 5 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively, due to lower exports and EV-related uncertainties. With China's export restrictions on rare earths and rising global protectionism, India's auto sector must navigate uncertain terrain. Kotak warns that gross margins across OEMs will remain under pressure, though currency tailwinds and selective policy support could offer partial relief. While the first quarter signals caution, resilient domestic demand and policy-driven momentum may offer hope for a recovery in the second half.

Omar Abdullah urges Bengal tourists to visit J&K

Kolkata, July 9 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday called on the people of West Bengal to visit his state, assuring that the security situation has significantly improved. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Kolkata to attend a tourism fair, Abdullah sought to counter negative perceptions surrounding the region's safety. 'The situation is not as bad as it's being portrayed. Tourist arrivals have picked up, and the Amarnath Yatra is underway with a strong turnout via both the Pahalgam and Sonmarg routes,' he said. He emphasised that pilgrims he had interacted with expressed satisfaction with the prevailing conditions. 'Everyone I spoke to was happy and felt safe. I am here in Kolkata to promote Jammu and Kashmir tourism. I sincerely invite people from Bengal to come and experience our hospitality,' he added. His remarks come in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives including 25 tourists which had a deep effect on the tourism sector in the valley. Addressing the tragedy, Abdullah voiced confidence in the security forces' efforts to apprehend the perpetrators. 'It's difficult terrain, and tracking someone in the mountains isn't easy. But they won't remain hidden for long. Our forces are actively pursuing them,' he said. Abdullah is also scheduled to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat today. When asked about the meeting, Abdullah said, 'Yes, I have a meeting with her. Let the meeting happen, then we will talk about it.' While the agenda remains undisclosed, political analysts speculate the meeting may cover a wide range of issues, including the recent attack, centre-state dynamics, and potential areas of collaboration between the two states. Following the Pahalgam attack, Banerjee had sent a five-member Trinamool Congress delegation to Jammu and Kashmir, where they engaged with local communities and met Abdullah at his official residence. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister later praised Banerjee's empathy, saying, 'Mamata Banerjee thought of us. We are grateful for her compassion.' Abdullah's visit is being viewed as a gesture of gratitude and a step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation. Sources suggest Thursday's meeting may also explore avenues for inter-state partnerships and efforts to revive Kashmir's flagging tourism sector. Notably, Banerjee's absence from a recent zonal council meeting has raised eyebrows, particularly as she intensifies her outreach to other regional leaders. In recent weeks, she has met with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, signalling broader political engagement. UNI XC RKM
