MBTA, Keolis pilot new renewable diesel fuel for commuter rails
Renewable diesel aims to cut emissions and to lower the carbon footprint of the MBTA, which will help the Commonwealth reach its emission reduction goals.
'We're pleased to partner with Keolis on this renewable diesel pilot as we continuously seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint,' said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. 'Testing alternative fuel sources for our Commuter Rail fleet joins other efforts at the T to lower our carbon emissions, and we look forward to evaluating the results of the pilot as we continue to increase resiliency across the system.'
The fuel pilot consists of all locomotives that lay over at the Newburyport Commuter Rail facility, which Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) are now fueling.
HVO is made from a mixture of vegetable oil and animal fats, which produce fewer carbon emissions than fossil fuels.
As of now, Keolis has already seen steady locomotive performance while using HVO.
'Getting people out of their cars and onto the train is a great first step, and we need to do more if we are going to reach the Commonwealth's emissions goals,' said Abdellah Chajai, CEO and General Manager of Keolis. 'This pilot program is a great opportunity to utilize an innovative new approach and can reduce CO2 emissions by more than 70% for these locomotives compared to fossil diesel. We're pleased to partner with the MBTA to make this pilot project a success.'
By the end of the program, MBTA and Keolis will reevaluate the performance of the renewable fuel and see if it is fit to be expanded to other locations across the MBTA.

Subway fare could rise to $3 in 2026 under new MTA proposal
The MTA says it's considering raising the fares for commuters in the New York City area yet again. Here are the proposed increases: Officials say there are incentives under this new proposal. For instance, after riding 10 trips on commuter rail within a two-week span, the MTA says it will give customers a free trip, regardless of time of day. Additionally, the proposal would introduce a new "day pass." Officials say one weekday pass will offer a 10% discount on the price of two peak one-way tickets. MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber defended the potential price hikes Wednesday. "We gotta remember what is really driving affordability issues in New York, and it's not transit. Transit is one of the few things that makes New York affordable," he said. "I hear from a lot of people who say, you're driving us crazy with $2.90 and the dimes." Lieber added that the agency is "giving people much more service on all of the system." Some subway riders weren't bothered by the idea of a 10-cent fare hike. "What difference does it make? It was like $2.90 and now it's $3?" one person said. "Well, as long as they're using it to improve the rides," rider Laurrell Bradley said. The MTA will hold public hearings and feedback sessions over the next couple months before they vote on these proposals in the fall. If they're approved, the changes will go into effect in January 2026.

Market Basket suspends 48 employees at Massachusetts store after DHS audit
Market Basket has reportedly suspended dozens of employees at one of its Massachusetts stores following a Department of Homeland Security audit. Forty-eight workers at the Tewksbury-based grocery chain's New Bedford location were suspended last week, The Boston Globe reported. Adrian Ventura, executive director of the New Bedford-based nonprofit Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores, told the newspaper that suspensions are linked to recent operations by federal immigration officials. A Market Basket spokesperson also confirmed to The Globe that the DHS investigation dated back to 2023. The DHS ordered an I-9 audit of the store in 2023, but it was delayed by the US Department of Labor, according to the report. Market Basket told The Globe that the recent DHS investigation of paperwork for some employees revealed 'several had not been properly updated.' The grocery chain says it looks forward to welcoming the suspended employees back to work once their paperwork is up to date. ICE and the DHS have not commented on the matter. Why is the Trump administration really holding up MBTA train shells?

Advertisement Massachusetts picked the Chinese company back in 2014 because it offered the low bid and promised to assemble the trains in Springfield with shells shipped from China. To then-governor Deval Patrick, the deal was a perfect two-fer, providing the T with bargain trains while creating several hundred blue-collar jobs in a part of the state that often feels overlooked by state transportation spending. For the company, meanwhile, the deal was supposed to be its entree into the American market. I don't mean to minimize the issue; obviously, if the company really did violate laws against importing slave-made products that would be a massive problem, and a reason for the state to bail on the contract immediately. But the way the administration and Congress have had it out for this company makes me wonder how genuine their concerns for its workers in China really are. The trains are now years beyond schedule. There's undoubtedly plenty of blame to go around for that, and I don't mean to let the company off the hook. But what if politicians hadn't spent so much energy trying to thwart CRRC? Why was the company that made something as socially useful as trains held to such a higher standard than ones making, say, smartphones? I get the concerns about Chinese dumping — ie, using artificially low prices to gain market share at the expense of American firms. China has been accused of anticompetitive behavior when it comes to solar panels and other goods. But the T's trains are being built by American workers, and with many American components. If US government pressure results in CRRC leaving the American market, the Chinese government will barely notice. But a lot of people in Springfield will.
