Mariners president Jerry Dipoto hopes his aggressive deadline moves lead to a World Series run
Dipoto, who reacquired the slugging third baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday in exchange for a trio of minor leaguers, was praising Suárez from the Mariners' dugout when the 34-year-old best known for his home runs and good vibes butted in.
'Stop it!' Suárez said, more than loud enough for all to hear.
Suárez, Dipoto and the rest of the franchise had plenty to be pleased about after the trade deadline. The Mariners, who entered Thursday night's game against the Texas Rangers in playoff position, bolstered their lineup by adding more than just Suárez, who has 36 homers this season and is tied with Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the major league lead with 87 RBIs.
A week ago, the Mariners made another deal with the D-backs for slugging first baseman Josh Naylor. Dipoto believes Seattle acquired the 'best bats' available, adding power to a lineup that already ranks fifth in the majors in home runs.
'This is the best lineup we've had since I've been here,' Dipoto said. 'Without question.'
Dipoto, who was hired as the Mariners' general manager in 2015 and promoted to president of baseball operations in 2021, has overseen a number of competitive clubs in the Emerald City. While Seattle has qualified for the playoffs only once under Dipoto, it has had a winning record in six of the last nine seasons.
Dipoto's teams have often been in the playoff race ahead of the deadline, but Seattle's moves haven't been as aggressive as this year's additions of Suárez, Naylor and veteran left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson.
Dipoto said his mindset wasn't that different from previous seasons, but he said he was more willing to acquire players who will be free agents at the end of the year.
'We feel like this team deserved it, the opportunity to just go out and see if we can win the World Series,' Dipoto said. 'We feel like we have as good a lineup as there is in our league. Our rotation, if our guys do the things that they do, has proven that they can be as good as anybody in this league.'
This team is in many ways deeper than previous squads, too. Raleigh is in the midst of what Dipoto called an 'MVP-type' season, and the Mariners had four other All-Stars.
Starting pitchers George Kirby and Logan Gilbert, both of whom missed significant time earlier in the season with injuries, are healthy again, adding to a rotation that's been buoyed by Bryan Woo and Luis Castillo.
'I think if you talk to other clubs in the league,' Dipoto said, 'they're pretty bullish on what we're capable of when we're hitting on all cylinders. And while we had a hot streak early in the season, we haven't hit our next hot streak, and it's coming.'
To Dipoto's point, the Mariners' longest win streak of the season was six games and it came at the end of April and early May. The additions of Suárez, Naylor and Ferguson could push Seattle from being a fringe postseason contender to a legitimate threat to win the AL West, in which they entered Thursday trailing the Houston Astros by five games.
Manager Dan Wilson was confident that he had a good team even if the Mariners hadn't added talent at the deadline. Unlike previous seasons, though, Dipoto felt compelled to supplement the roster in a meaningful way.
'I believe that adding to this team, adding some energy to the room and just showing the guys that we believe in what we're doing was important,' Dipoto said. 'And I think the response has been great.'

Aaron Judge could return to Yankees lineup at Texas on Tuesday
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Aaron Judge could be back in the New York Yankees' lineup as early as Tuesday, when their captain is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list after being sidelined because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge hit off Yankees minor league pitchers at the team's complex in Tampa for the second day in a row Monday, and was then expected to join the team in Texas. Manager Aaron Boone said the two-time AL MVP could be available Tuesday for the middle game of the three-game series. 'I don't want to say definitely because I haven't seen him yet, but I think that's the plan," Boone said before Monday night's series opener against the Rangers. 'I think he's expected in here tonight and we'll make that call.' Judge hasn't played since July 25 because of the elbow strain. An MRI showed no acute damage to his ulnar collateral ligament and he had a platelet-rich injection July 27, when he was placed on the IL in a move retroactive to the previous day. His .342 batting average was still the best in the majors going into Monday's games. He was fourth with 37 homers and fifth with 85 RBIs. If Judge does return while in Texas, Boone said he will be the designated hitter. But the slugging outfielder could also play catch while there, which will help determine when he could return to the outfield. 'I'm hoping that Judgie's clean and is playing catch either (Tuesday) or the next day and we'll start to get an idea about a timeline for that and then we'll see when we get back home what happens there,' Boone said. Giancarlo Stanton has been the Yankees' starting DH for all of his 32 games this season, including the opener against the Rangers. He missed the first 70 games of the season with inflammation in the tendons of both elbows, and Boone said he wouldn't play the outfield in Texas if Judge does DH during the series. The first time Judge said he felt pain in the elbow was July 22 at Toronto, after he made a strong throw home after George Springer singled to right. An inning later, Judge winced after catching a fly in the right-field corner and throwing to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Judge was caught by a YES Network camera clenching his right hand in a fist. The Yankees arrived in Texas after being swept in a three-game series at Miami. That dropped them to third place in the AL East behind Toronto and Boston with 50 games left in the regular season, including Monday night. They go back home after the series in Texas. Boone said having Judge back will be good for the team. 'Yeah, he's Aaron Judge. We know what he means to our lineup and to the guys in the room," Boone said. "So to get him back, we're certainly excited about that and then hopefully shortly thereafter he's back out in the field, too.' ___

Braves Predicted To Cut Ties With $15 Million Trade Acquisition This Season
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. This season has been a complete disaster for the Atlanta Braves. Rather than contend for the World Series, the Braves have dealt with injury after injury. They've been crippled beyond recognition. While this season is a lost cause, the future is still right in front of them. There are moves to be made, especially with some of the talented players set to return from injuries in the near future. Eric Cole of The House That Hank Built recently predicted the Braves would cut ties with veteran pitcher Erick Fedde once one of their starting pitchers returns from injury this year. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Erick Fedde #22 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 29, 2025 in Kansas City,... KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Erick Fedde #22 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 29, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri. More"So this is assuming that the Braves get one of their many injured pitchers back and one of the fill-ins has to go. Bryce Elder can be infuriating, but he has shown at least some competency, and he can be optioned anyway," Cole wrote. "The main candidates are Erick Fedde and Carlos Carrasco, and it is a close call between the two starters, but it feels like Carrasco is the kind of veteran mentor the Braves want around, whereas Fedde will have to earn the right to stay, and that seems unlikely." Once the Braves have a starting pitcher return from injury, Fedde will be designated for assignment or cut again. He's not a very competitive big leaguer at this stage of his career, and it seems like the Braves only added him to eat innings while their rotation was injured. With Hurston Waldrep throwing well in the Speedway Classic, the Braves already have one youngster to stay on the roster. Fedde will lose his spot in the big leagues when a prospect is ready or when an injured starter is set to return to Atlanta. 1 last-minute trade Detroit Tigers must make before 2025 deadline
The post 1 last-minute trade Detroit Tigers must make before 2025 deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Detroit Tigers are buying at the MLB Trade Deadline for the first time in over a decade. Detroit has yet to make a splash move despite its nine game lead atop the AL Central. However, they have made a few smaller moves. The Tigers traded for Chris Paddack in a deal with their division rival Minnesota Twins. And on Wednesday, the Tigers traded for Rafael Montero in a deal with the Atlanta Braves. However, Detroit is going to need more than these small moves if they want to win the World Series. For as good as this team has been, there are obvious holes in their game. And their recent 1-12 slump has shown they can regress pretty hard for extended stretches. They need to fortify the roster so they can stand up to teams like the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. The 2025 MLB Trade Deadline is less than 24 hours away. Time is running out for the Tigers to push their chips to the center of the table. With this in mind, here is one last-minute trade the Tigers must complete before Thursday evening's deadline. Tigers must swing trade for Rays' Pete Fairbanks The Tigers have a few different areas of need they can address. For instance, they could certainly use a right-handed hitter in their lineup. Moreover, another starter wouldn't be a bad idea. Paddack looked good in his debut. But Casey Mize is dealing with knee issues that could flare up again as the season goes along. However, the biggest need for this team is the back end of the bullpen. Detroit has received good performances from Will Vest in the closer's role. He has a Pitching Run Value of nine, according to Baseball Savant, while pitching to a 2.53 ERA. Beyond his efforts, though, it's been quite inconsistent. Tommy Kahnle looked unhittable for portions of the early months of the season. He has since hit a rough path, though he is starting to rebound. Chase Lee was a surprise when he received a promotion to the majors. However, opposing hitters are starting to figure out the sidearm hurler. Furthermore, Tyler Holton struggled in the first few months of the season, as well. Detroit needs to add another presence to the back end of its bullpen. And the best option for them to target is Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks. The 31-year-old has a $7 million club option for the 2026 season, making him more than a rental. Fairbanks has pitched well in 2025. Across 40.1 innings, he has a 2.90 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 15 walks. The veteran closer has a Pitching Run Value of six, which would be the best mark for any Tigers reliever not named Vest. Fairbanks won't solve Detroit's issues with strikeouts, at least on paper. However, he has a blazing fastball that can reach 97 miles per hour. He combines this with a slider that hitters are hitting just .132 against this season. When hitters do make contact with Fairbanks' offerings, they don't do too much with it. His pitches have a Barrel Percentage of just 2.6%, the lowest mark he's recorded since 2022. He generates a fair number of ground balls as a result. The Tigers need a closer who can take the ball in big moments down the stretch. Trading for Fairbanks certainly won't be cheap. However, the Tigers have the prospects to do so, and they are in a position to capitalize on a potential World Series window this summer.
