India should avoid rushing for trade pact with US, warn experts

Synopsis
Experts caution India against rushing into a trade deal with the US, potentially compromising crucial sectors like agriculture. The US's aggressive tactics, including imposing tariffs on key partners like the EU, highlight the risk of unbalanced agreements. Despite US pressure, many nations resist one-sided terms, urging India to proceed cautiously and protect its core interests during negotiations.
Getty Images India should avoid rushing into a trade deal with the US that compromises core sectors like agriculture, experts on Sunday said, cautioning that Washington is not sparing even its key partners like the EU. The US has shot off letters to 24 countries and the European Union (EU) imposing tariffs that are as high as 50 per cent on Brazil. On its key trading partners like the EU and Mexico, 30 per cent duties have been proposed from August 1. Economic think tank GTRI (Global Trade Research Initiative) said India must recognise that it is not alone in facing US pressure. The US is currently negotiating with over 20 countries and seeking concessions from more than 90. "Yet most are resisting because they see these MASALA (Mutually Agreed Settlements Achieved through Leveraged Arm-twisting) deals for what they are politically driven, transactional demands offering no lasting trade certainty," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.
He added that both the EU and Mexico are major trade partners of the US, and Washington can impose tariffs on them to pressure them into quick deals, India cannot expect a balanced deal. Another trade expert said India should tread cautiously while negotiating the trade pact with the US. The expert added that Trump's trade threat is rapidly losing credibility as despite more than three months of pressure, only two countries -- the UK and Vietnam -- have agreed to the USA's one-sided terms. From Japan and South Korea to the EU and Australia, countries are resisting Trump's trade deals that demand tariff cuts without reciprocal US concessions, mandate guaranteed purchases of American goods, and leave the door open for future tariffs even after a deal is signed, the GTRI said. A team of Indian trade negotiators will soon visit Washington to further talks for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
"India should stay the course and avoid trading away core sectors like agriculture. A hasty deal under pressure could have irreversible consequences, especially when such agreements may not survive the next shift in US politics," Srivastava said.

Landmark Cars stock jumps 6% as B&K Sec initiates coverage, 60% upside seen

Landmark Cars share price: Shares of premium automotive retailer Landmark Cars were in focus on Monday, July 14, 2025, rising as much as 6 per cent to hit an intraday high of ₹539.65 after domestic brokerage B&K Securities initiated coverage on the stock with a bullish outlook, driven by strong growth potential and improving profitability over the next two years. The brokerage initiated coverage on Landmark Cars with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of ₹820 per share, implying a 60 per cent upside from Friday's closing levels. At 3 PM, the stock was trading at ₹531, up 4.5 per cent from its previous day's close of ₹507.85. In comparison, the benchmark NSE Nifty50 was trading lower by 73.55 points or 0.3 per cent at 25,080.3 levels. According to analysts at B& Securities, while Landmark Cars' proforma and reported revenues grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively, from FY23 to FY25, the company's Ebitda, PBT, and PAT declined by 3 per cent, 20 per cent, and 55 per cent, respectively. However, the company's sales growth of 11 per cent was double the Indian passenger vehicle sales CAGR of 5 per cent over FY23 to FY25. During FY25, the older outlets and workshops contributed ₹70 crore to PBT, and the newly opened ones incurred PBT-level losses of ₹40 crore. As these facilities ramp up, they are expected to break even starting Q1FY26, with most turning profitable by the end of FY26, the brokerage said. The company has also tied up with three new brands - Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Kia and MG Motors - over the past two years. Landmark Cars is the first multi-brand, multi-location auto dealer operating in the premium and luxury car segment in India with 70 showrooms and 61 workshops as of FY25. "While the after-sales mix for old brands is 17 per cent for the new brands, it is 9 per cent. As the after-sales mix improves for these new brands and new outlets scale up, we expect the margin of the company to improve from 5.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent over FY25-27E," B&K Securities said. Analysts at B&K Securities believe that Landmark Cars remains a highly moated business with pan-India reach, high switching costs for OEMs, and market leadership with many OEMs, including Mercedes Benz, BYD, Jeep, Volkswagen, Honda and MG Motors. While the high capital requirements prevent smaller players from entering this segment, the intricate nature of the business is driving consolidation in the industry.

Bitcoin Hits Record High Of $120,000 As Bullish Momentum Builds

Bitcoin breached $120,000 for the first time, with investor optimism increasing almost daily after it emerged from a narrow trading range that had left skeptics wondering whether the original cryptocurrency would regain the record-breaking momentum seen at the start of the year. After surging on the election of Donald Trump to a second US presidential term, Bitcoin had settled into a pattern of fluctuating on either side of $100,000 for several months. Concern about Trump's political and economic policies had helped to temper optimism over the pro-crypto agenda of his administration. Now with other risk assets such as stocks back around record highs, Bitcoin has also resumed its push higher. "This shift signals a maturing perspective on Bitcoin - not merely a speculative asset, but a macro hedge and a structurally scarce store of value," said George Mandres, senior trader at XBTO Trading LLC. "A surge in risk-on sentiment across equities, coupled with significant institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, has fueled this steady ascent, notably absent the sharp volatility of previous bull runs." The crypto market bellwether rose as much as 1.9% to $121,344, and is now up about 30% since December. Bitcoin more than doubled last year. Bitcoin's renewed momentum has also spilled over to smaller tokens - second-ranked Ether rose 1.5%, while XRP and Solana both increased about 2.7% around noon in Singapore on Monday. "Bitcoin's cleared $120,000, but the real test is $125,000," said Rachael Lucas, a crypto analyst at BTC Markets. While short-term profit booking can be expected, "the uptrend has fuel" driven by strong demand from exchange traded funds, she added. "Support at $112,000 and any dip looks like a buying opportunity, not a reversal." Helping to fuel the latest rally was the liquidation of bearish crypto bets at the end of the week. Traders who shorted Bitcoin bore the brunt of the rapid damage, with over $1 billion in positions wiped out, according to data from Coinglass. The token rose on the back of anticipation for what a Congressional committee dubbed "Crypto Week," where lawmakers in the US Congress are expected to debate and possibly vote on key cryptocurrency legislation. Some analysts aren't totally sold on the token's continued rise. "In my view, this isn't a macro-driven rally, but rather an isolated event," said Nicolai Sondergaard, a research analyst at Nansen. "That said, recent US policy developments such as fiscal expansion and expectations of further monetary easing have created a backdrop that is undeniably favorable for Bitcoin."
