Literary, cultural festival in Kagwad tomorrow

The Hindu22-04-2025
Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha (KVS), which has been working for the cause of Kannada land and language, will hold a literary and cultural event in the border town of Kagwad in Belagavi district on Thursday.
General secretary of KVS Shankar Halgatti told presspersons in Dharwad on Tuesday that while Kannadigas are peace-loving people who honour other languages and cultures, their lenience should not be considered as weakness and none should try to intimidate them.
He said that although Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, some elements in Maharashtra are trying hard to disturb peace and spread enmity leading to linguistic tension in the border which is uncalled for.
'The sangha is holding the literary and cultural event at Kagwad to give a befitting reply to such elements through the Kannada awareness programme,' he said.
The programme titled Kannada Awareness and Cultural Celebration in the Border Region on Thursday in Kagwad is being organised in association with the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and the Shivananada College of Kagwad.
Chairman of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority Somanna Bevinmarad will inaugurate the event at 10 a.m. and Swami Yatishwaranand of Kagwad and scholar Gurulingappa Dubale will participate, he said. The event will be presided over by sangha president Chandrakant Bellad.
Prior to the main event, a procession will be taken out from Channamma Circle in Kagwad to the venue. Post the inauguration, there will be various literary sessions and cultural events at 6 p.m., he said.

After Bengaluru gets 4,500 e-buses, MLA asks H.D. Kumaraswamy to extend scheme to North Karnataka

In a bid to bridge the transportation infrastructure gap in North Karnataka, Arvind Chandrakant Bellad, MLA from Hubballi-Dharwad West and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, has written to Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy seeking the allocation of electric buses under the PM e-Drive initiative to underserved cities in the region. Hubballi MLA Arvind Bellad(Wikipedia) Also Read - Bengaluru has more techies than California: Mohandas Pai urges DK Shivakumar to help city's growth What Bellad wrote in the letter? In his letter, Bellad welcomed the central government's push for sustainable public transport and acknowledged the allotment of around 4,500 electric buses to Bengaluru under the initiative. However, he stressed that rapidly growing cities in North Karnataka, such as Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Vijayapura, are in urgent need of enhanced public transportation systems and should also receive their fair share of electric buses. 'These districts are witnessing increasing transport demand and would greatly benefit from green mobility solutions, both in terms of environmental impact and economic development,' Bellad stated. The MLA argued that many North Karnataka cities already have the basic infrastructure in place for such a rollout, including KSRTC depots and BRT corridors, which would allow for a swift and cost-effective deployment of electric buses. He added that equitable distribution of the PM e-Drive fleet would help address the regional imbalance in state-level infrastructure. Watch Bellad also pointed out that the move would boost local employment, strengthen the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, and support the broader goals of the National Clean Air Programme. He urged the Centre to consider these factors while expanding the program beyond Bengaluru. 'This step would reflect the government's commitment to inclusive growth and ensure balanced development across Karnataka,' he concluded. The PM e-Drive scheme is part of the Centre's green mobility push, aimed at reducing vehicular emissions and promoting cleaner modes of public transport across India.

Bengaluru's Yellow Line Metro may open by August 15, says BMRCL Chief: Report

After months of anticipation, the Bengaluru Metro's much-delayed Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronic City, is now expected to open by August 15, according to top officials at the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Indian Express reported. BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao.(X/M Maheshwar Rao) The announcement follows a citizen-led protest rally organized by BJP MPs and MLAs on Saturday, demanding the immediate commissioning of the stretch. (Also read: 'Bengaluru existed before IT boom': Viral post counters city's retirement-town label) The event, held under the banner 'Yellow Line na open maadi (Open Yellow Line)', drew attention to growing commuter frustration over the delay in connecting major tech and industrial corridors of the city. BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao said the Yellow Line has received its third train, and final testing is currently underway. Since the corridor is designed for driverless, automated trains, an independent safety assessment is in progress, the report further added. According to the publication, due to limited rolling stock availability, operations on the Yellow Line will begin on a modest scale. Only three trains will be available initially, with a 20-minute headway between services. The trains will stop at five to six key stations during the early phase. Rao added that full-scale service will be ramped up gradually. BMRCL is expecting two new trains every month from August onwards from the Titagarh Rail System. Data on ridership and commuter flow to Bommasandra will inform future adjustments. Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya, who spearheaded the protest alongside Bangalore Central MP P C Mohan, also demanded transparency from BMRCL on its fare pricing strategy. A recent fare fixation report recommending over 100% hike in Metro fares has drawn criticism from commuters, prompting calls for the report to be made public. Bengaluru Court Restrains Kamal Haasan From Making Remarks Against Kannada

Bengaluru: A court here on Friday passed an ex-parte interim injunction order restraining actor Kamal Haasan from making any remarks against Kannada language. It restrains him from posting, making, writing, publishing any statement or remarks claiming linguistic superiority over Kannada language or making any statements against the Kannada language, literature, land and culture. An Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge here passed the order after hearing a suit filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) through its president Mahesh Joshi. It sought an injunction against Hassan from making any defamatory statements against the Kannada language and culture. The court also ordered issuance of a summons to Kamal Hassan and posted the case to August 30 for further hearing. Actor-politician Haasan's recent statement claiming that "Kannada was born out of Tamil" during a promotional event for his film 'Thug Life' had sparked widespread outrage among pro-Kannada groups and cultural organisations.
