Pic: The Kannada Bhavan of Nehru Nagar in Belagavi Belagavi: Belagavi deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan, formed a committee involving various departments to monitor the Kannada Bhavan building. Kannada activist Ashok Chandaragi wrote a letter to the DC in this regard, objecting to the use of the building by a private organisation, despite it being built with govt funds and used for commercial purposes. Kannada Bhavan of Nehru Nagar was constructed with a grant of Rs 3.2 crore from the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and Rs 2.9 crore from the Kannada and culture department. In a meeting of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority held in Bengaluru on May 6, member Ashok Chandaragi raised the issue of managing the Kannada Bhavan. He demanded that the authority form a committee of officers under the DC's leadership to manage the Kannada Bhavan built with govt funds. The amount collected from the commercial shops on the premises of the Kannada Bhavan is being used by a private organisation. "It is not the right step to open a commercial shop in a building built for the survival of the Kannada language and culture and the use of the public," he objected. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kardioloog: Buikvet na je 50e? It was decided in the meeting that since 2010-11, all Kannada Bhavans constructed with the authority's grant are being managed by committees of officers under the leadership of the respective DC. The Bhavan in Belagavi also should be managed in the same manner. In a meeting held on May 29 to discuss the problems of border areas, district minister Satish Jarkiholi recommended the formation of a committee under the leadership of the DC for the management of Kannada Bhavan. The committee, chaired by the deputy commissioner, includes the additional deputy commissioner and the secretary of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority as permanent members, and the deputy commissioner (revenue) of the BCC as member-secretary. The committee members will examine the objections related to the Kannada Bhavan and the commercial shops on its premises. The member-secretary will collect the details of the rent and documents collected from the commercial shops and present them before the management committee. Pro-Kannada leader Ashok Chandaragi said that the income from commercial pots should be used for the maintenance of Kannada Bhavan. The fee for Kannada Bhavan programmes should be fixed at a minimum so that more Kannada cultural events are held here. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan said that a committee has already been formed to manage Kannada Bhavan and a meeting will be held soon to take further action.

Kannada outfits oppose Pawar's participation in govt programme
Belagavi: Pro-Kannada organisations in Belagavi have strongly objected NCP chief Sharad Pawar being invited for the centenary celebration of a Marathi school in Yallur, Belagavi taluk. Pawar, who was previously, allegedly responsible for Kannada-Marathi conflict, was invited to a govt event like the centenary of a Marathi school, which angered Kannada organisations . Ashok Chandaragi, president of the Belagavi Zilla Kannada Sanghatanegala Kriya Samiti and member of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority, submitted a petition to the Karnataka govt through the DC on Saturday, objecting the invitation being sent to Sharad Pawar in a govt programme of Karnataka. They also submitted a petition seeking clarification from the education department in this regard. In the petition, Chandaragi said that Maharashtra leader Sharad Pawar had started 'Seema Ladhai' from Belagavi on June 1, 1986, which led to huge violence. Pawar participated in the centenary celebrations of Govt Marathi Model School in Yellur on Saturday. Chandaragi questioned who had invited Pawar to a event at a govt school in Karnataka, and sought clarification on senior govt officials noticing this anti-Karnataka activity. When anyone in Karnataka hears the word Yallur, they immediately think of it as a centre of pro-Maharashtra activities. In 1986, a plaque saying 'Yellur, Maharashtra State' was installed in the village. Lot of legal battles were fought to get the plaque removed, he said and added that there are some people in Yallur village who wish to rekindle the language dispute. "Pawar is a senior leader of the co-operative movement, who visited the many of its events in Belagavi. We have no objection to this. We hope that such national leaders should not help pro-Maharashtra forces in Belagavi, and strongly object to Pawar's invitation to an official programme at the Yallur govt school."

Literary, cultural festival in Kagwad tomorrow
Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha (KVS), which has been working for the cause of Kannada land and language, will hold a literary and cultural event in the border town of Kagwad in Belagavi district on Thursday. General secretary of KVS Shankar Halgatti told presspersons in Dharwad on Tuesday that while Kannadigas are peace-loving people who honour other languages and cultures, their lenience should not be considered as weakness and none should try to intimidate them. He said that although Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, some elements in Maharashtra are trying hard to disturb peace and spread enmity leading to linguistic tension in the border which is uncalled for. 'The sangha is holding the literary and cultural event at Kagwad to give a befitting reply to such elements through the Kannada awareness programme,' he said. The programme titled Kannada Awareness and Cultural Celebration in the Border Region on Thursday in Kagwad is being organised in association with the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and the Shivananada College of Kagwad. Chairman of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority Somanna Bevinmarad will inaugurate the event at 10 a.m. and Swami Yatishwaranand of Kagwad and scholar Gurulingappa Dubale will participate, he said. The event will be presided over by sangha president Chandrakant Bellad. Prior to the main event, a procession will be taken out from Channamma Circle in Kagwad to the venue. Post the inauguration, there will be various literary sessions and cultural events at 6 p.m., he said.
