Gold continues to be a favourite for central banks! Amidst rising global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, central banks around the world will continue to stock up on gold, says a World Gold Council survey.
Gold retains its position as a reliable protective asset, helping to minimise risks during persistent economic and geopolitical instability.
According to fresh 2025 statistics published by the World Gold Council on Tuesday, approximately 95 per cent of reserve managers anticipate continued growth in central banks' gold reserves over the next 12 months.
This figure marks the highest level since monitoring began in 2019, showing a substantial increase of 17 per cent compared to 2024 results.
The 2025 Central Banks Gold Reserves (CBGR) survey, which includes responses from 73 central banks worldwide, reveals that approximately 43 per cent of these institutions intend to expand their gold holdings within the coming year.

Central banks within emerging markets and developing economies (EMDE) continue to express optimism regarding gold's future significance in their reserve portfolios.
A significant proportion of EMDE respondents (48 per cent) anticipated an increase in their gold reserves within the next 12 months, whilst only 21 per cent of advanced economy respondents shared this outlook, showing an increase from the previous year.
For EMDEs, inflation (84 per cent) and geopolitical circumstances (81 per cent) were primary considerations for holding gold, alongside interest rates. In contrast, advanced economies showed lower concern, with 67 per cent and 60 per cent respectively prioritising these factors.

There is a noticeable trend towards domestic gold storage, with 59 per cent of respondents now keeping gold locally, an increase from 41 per cent in 2024.
The majority of participants (73 per cent) anticipate a reduction in US dollar holdings within global reserves over the next five years.
The survey indicates that alternative currencies, including the euro and renminbi, alongside gold, are expected to gain prominence in global reserves during this period.
Shaokai Fan, Global Head of Central Banks & Head of Asia-Pacific (ex-China), commented: "After eight years of conducting this survey, we have reached an important milestone: nearly half of the central bank respondents intend to increase their own gold holdings in the coming year."
"This is remarkable, especially considering how many record-high prices we've hit so far in 2025. Notably, this reflects the current global financial and geopolitical environments. Gold remains a strategic asset as the world faces uncertainty and tumult. Central banks are concerned about interest rates, inflation, and instability - all reasons to turn to gold to mitigate risk," added Shaokai Fan.

Over Rs 11 lakh crore in loans disbursed to women self-help groups by banks: Minister

New Delhi: Loans worth over Rs 11 lakh crore have been disbursed to women self-help groups (SHGs) through formal financial institutions under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday. This milestone reflects the central government's strong commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards inclusive rural development, financial empowerment of women, and fostering self-reliance at the village level, he added. Under the Ministry of Rural Development's DAY-NRLM, rural poor women across the country are strengthening their livelihoods through robust community institutions. Through SHGs, they are being provided collateral-free loans, interest subsidies, and other financial support, enabling them to start their own businesses and increase their incomes. A repayment rate of over 98 per cent clearly demonstrates the initiative's credibility, discipline, and efficient management, said Chouhan. Appreciating the banking community's support, Chouhan said that banking partners have played a remarkable role in turning the dreams of millions of rural women into reality. The tireless efforts of 'Bank Sakhis' have facilitated SHG-bank linkage and ensured timely loan repayment. He further said that the main contribution of this banking partnership is the provision of easy loans to SHGs under the priority sector lending, along with accessible banking services for SHG members through simplified processes. The initiative also promotes Aadhaar and mobile seeding of bank accounts and enhances financial literacy. The repayment systems are being strengthened in the country. 'Bank Sakhis' are increasingly assisting with transactions, loan applications, and documentations, as well as creating awareness about insurance, pensions, and other financial schemes. Moreover, the Community Based Repayment Mechanism (CBRM) is being fortified to ensure timely loan recovery under this significant programme. The central government initiatives like DAY-NRLM and 'Lakhpati Didi' are transforming the economic status of millions of women in rural India, he mentioned.

Trump announces 25% tariff on India starting Aug. 1, unspecified penalties for buying Russian energy

Washington: President Donald Trump says he'll impose a 25 per cent tariff on goods from India, plus an additional import tax because of India's purchasing of Russian oil. Trump said on Truth Social on Wednesday that India 'is our friend' but its 'Tariffs are far too high' on U.S. goods. The Republican president added that India buys military equipment and oil from Russia, which Trump said has enabled the war in Ukraine. As a result, he intends to charge an additional 'penalty' starting on Friday as part of the launch of the administration's revised tariffs on multiple countries. Trump added that India buys military equipment and oil from Russia, which he said has enabled Moscow's war in Ukraine. As a result, he intends to charge an additional 'penalty' starting on Friday as part of the launch of his administration's revised tariffs on multiple countries. The Census Bureau reported that the U.S. ran a $45.8 trade imbalance in goods with India last year, meaning it imported more than it exported. At a population exceeding 1.4 billion people, India is the world's largest country and a possible geopolitical counterbalance to China. India and Russia have close relations, and New Delhi has not supported Western sanctions on Moscow over its war in Ukraine. When Trump in February met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the U.S. president said that India would start buying American oil and natural gas. Trump discussed his policies on trade and tariffs with reporters accompanying him Tuesday on the flight home following a five-day visit to Scotland. He declined to comment then when asked about reports that India was bracing for a U.S. tariff rate of at least 25%, saying, 'We're going to see.' Trump also said the outlines of a trade agreement with India had not yet been finalised.
