Grammy Award-winning artist teams up with Lynx to donate $250,000 to 10 Minnesota nonprofits
Grammy Award winner Justin Vernon, the frontman for Bon Iver, is teaming up with the Minnesota Lynx to give back to the community. Vernon is using his star power to help those working to end gender inequality, domestic violence and sexual abuse. Through his 2ABillion campaign, he's giving $25,000 each to 10 different Minnesota nonprofits. "The players, the league has been going for a long time, and I'm just lucky to be around it and to amplify what's already happening," said Vernon. On Monday night, Vernon, alongside Lynx guard Natisha Hiedeman and Lynx Hall of Famer Seimone Augustus, played hoops with dozens of young girls from She Rock She Rock, a Twin Cities nonprofit that empowers women and girls through music. It was special for Vernon and the Lynx to spend meaningful time with the people who are directly benefiting from this partnership. "It's why we do what we do. It's helping the community. It's giving back. It's helping overcome societal issues," said Carley Knox, president of business operations for the Lynx. The She Rock girls were in awe of meeting a star musician they look up to. "It was very honoring, honestly. I was very happy to be in his presence," said Jordan Dunkley, a She Rock She Rock participant. These girls shared how much the nonprofit has impacted their lives over the years. "For me, it helped me with teamwork and be able to help put myself out there in ways I wasn't able to before," said Brynhilde Gilbertson, a She Rock She Rock participant. Jenny Case, co-founder and artistic director of the nonprofit, said they've already put their $25,000 donation to use. "We hired additional staff, we gave away a lot of scholarships to campers that wouldn't have been able to attend otherwise and we got some new equipment that we desperately needed," said Case. It was a special moment for Heideman to take a break from the high competition with the Lynx. She uses music in a big way to improve her own game in the WNBA. "I'm always listening to music, 24/7. Whatever mood I'm in, music has always been an outlet for me, so just being able to have it as an outlet is special," said Heideman, whose pregame song of choice is Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan. Vernon has been a long-time Lynx fan, growing up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He says joining forces with his favorite team made perfect sense to him. "Watching the Lynx play is like watching the John Coltrane Quartet play," said Vernon. The Lynx and Vernon say this partnership is just the beginning, and they plan to continue to give back to the Twin Cities community for seasons to come.

Rebecca Sugar's Return Shows How To Revive A Franchise With Heart
Today, in an era of streaming where multiple franchises are being rebooted and revived seemingly every other week, the challenge for networks isn't creating something new. The real task is convincing audiences to return or revisit franchises they loved and figuring out how to interest them in older content. That's why the recent announcement that the creator of Steven Universe, who previously worked on Adventure Time, is returning to Cartoon Network to help develop the newest installment in the Adventure Time series, the Adventure Time movie, alongside Patrick McHale, creator of Over the Garden Wall, and Adam Muto, creator of Random! Cartoons, all of whom worked on the show's original run. Before Steven Universe was created, Sugar worked as a storyboard artist and writer for Adventure Time, contributing to some of the show's most memorable and emotional episodes, including "Simon & Marcy," "I Remember You," and "Be More," which were storyboarded, written by, or co-written with Sugar. Having won an Emmy for the Adventure Time episode, 'It Came from the Nightosphere,' Sugar is more than just a fan favorite. Through storyboarding, animation, singing, and songwriting, Sugar is a creative force of nature that has left an emotional legacy ingrained in Adventure Time and Cartoon Network. Unlike other franchises that keep producing soulless content just to give viewers something to watch, Sugar stands out with originality, creativity, and the trust of the audience who believe what they see is heartfelt. In an era of remakes, reboots, and unnecessary continuations, viewers worry whether their favorite franchises can end on a high note. The threat is constant that it might come back to tell one more pointless story that ruins what was already established or doesn't add anything and is just a cash grab. For example, some of Cartoon Network's other revival attempts, like The Powerpuff Girls Reboot or Velma, have shown that nostalgia isn't enough to keep a series alive. Fans don't just want to engage with an IP because it's an extension of something they used to love; they want it to be good and to see why the series was continued in the first place. Sugar, who is no stranger to sequel series, continued their story in Steven Universe: Future, which aired after the successful Steven Universe Movie. Fans got to see the aftermath of Steven's adventures from both the show and the movie, and how he needed to move on and look toward the future despite everything that happened. The show felt like a proper sendoff to Steven as a character. It served as a love letter to fans for sticking with him through everything over the years and watching him grow, addressing all that he had been through with proper healing and care, which resonated with fans for their healing journeys through trauma. That's why many fans celebrated when Sugar was announced as part of the team leading the Adventure Time film, because she showed that characters, even fictional ones, can grow and tell compelling stories that leave you wanting more, even if the story has a definitive ending. In subtle ways, Sugar's return to Adventure Time echoes the sentiment of one of their most memorable songs from the series: 'Everything stays, right where you left it. Everything stays, but it still changes. Ever so slightly, daily and nightly, in little ways, everything stays.' And, in a way, it reflects the Adventure Time franchise, which remains here after all these years, waiting for us to return and see how it's changed.

Marc Maron Reveals the Cost to Use a Taylor Swift Song — and the Mutual Celebrity Friend Who Helped Him Get Access
The comedian and podcaster used Swift's 'Bigger Than the Whole Sky' for his soon-to-be-released stand-up special Marc Maron said getting the rights to Taylor Swift's music doesn't come without a hefty price tag. The comedian and podcaster, 61, spent major dollars in order to use a specific song from the pop star's catalog for his upcoming stand-up special, he revealed on the July 25 episode of Vulture's Good One podcast. Licensing Swift's song 'Bigger Than the Whole Sky' — a bonus track on the 3am Edition of her 2022 album Midnights — cost about "$50,000," Maron said. He added that he felt he needed the specific track for a pivotal moment in his HBO special, Marc Maron: Panicked, so he reached out to a mutual friend, Jack Antonoff, for help. 'I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him — and he's the co-writer on that song,' Maron explained. 'I said, 'I don't know what's proper or how to do this, but we're running out of money on this thing. It's probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?' ' Maron said Antonoff, 41, advised him to go through official music licensing channels, and he was ultimately able to get approval to use the track. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'It was doable,' Maron said, adding, however, that the tens of thousands of dollars only covered the use of one minute of the song. 'I would have gone over the minute, [but] it would have been more money,' he explained. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Maron said he doesn't know if Swift, 35, has heard the specific joke in the special that her team signed off on, but he was 'manifesting' that she would indeed like it if she did — for the sake of his project. 'It had to happen,' Maron said. 'The real fear [was], like, [if] she doesn't let you use it, and then what do you do? You can't do the bit on the special.' While Maron didn't reveal the content of the bit in question, he has spoken about Swift's music — and his journey to becoming a Swiftie — in the past. 'I'm an open-minded guy, and I like music. I [wanted] to try to figure out what it is about Taylor Swift that everyone never shuts up about," he said on a May 2023 episode of his long-running podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. Maron said he ended up listening to Swift's Midnights album on a hike, and he was impressed with what her heard. 'I'm like, 'Alright. I get it.' It's pop music, but it's not dance music [and] it's, sort of, emotional. There's a lot of longing and sadness and isolation and processing these overwhelming feelings of melancholy," he recalled. When previously discussing the new special, the comedian said, per Deadline, that he felt like 'this is the best work' he's ever done, adding, 'Everything came together." Maron's latest creative endeavor comes two years after his last HBO special, the critically acclaimed From Bleak to Dark, which explored grief and the experience of losing his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Marc Maron: Panicked premieres on HBO on Friday, Aug. 1, at 8:00 p.m. EST. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max. Read the original article on People
