Marc Maron Reveals the Cost to Use a Taylor Swift Song — and the Mutual Celebrity Friend Who Helped Him Get Access

The comedian and podcaster used Swift's 'Bigger Than the Whole Sky' for his soon-to-be-released stand-up special
Marc Maron said getting the rights to Taylor Swift's music doesn't come without a hefty price tag.
The comedian and podcaster, 61, spent major dollars in order to use a specific song from the pop star's catalog for his upcoming stand-up special, he revealed on the July 25 episode of Vulture's Good One podcast.
Licensing Swift's song 'Bigger Than the Whole Sky' — a bonus track on the 3am Edition of her 2022 album Midnights — cost about "$50,000," Maron said.
He added that he felt he needed the specific track for a pivotal moment in his HBO special, Marc Maron: Panicked, so he reached out to a mutual friend, Jack Antonoff, for help.
'I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him — and he's the co-writer on that song,' Maron explained. 'I said, 'I don't know what's proper or how to do this, but we're running out of money on this thing. It's probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?' '
Maron said Antonoff, 41, advised him to go through official music licensing channels, and he was ultimately able to get approval to use the track.

'It was doable,' Maron said, adding, however, that the tens of thousands of dollars only covered the use of one minute of the song.
'I would have gone over the minute, [but] it would have been more money,' he explained.

Maron said he doesn't know if Swift, 35, has heard the specific joke in the special that her team signed off on, but he was 'manifesting' that she would indeed like it if she did — for the sake of his project.
'It had to happen,' Maron said. 'The real fear [was], like, [if] she doesn't let you use it, and then what do you do? You can't do the bit on the special.'

While Maron didn't reveal the content of the bit in question, he has spoken about Swift's music — and his journey to becoming a Swiftie — in the past.
'I'm an open-minded guy, and I like music. I [wanted] to try to figure out what it is about Taylor Swift that everyone never shuts up about," he said on a May 2023 episode of his long-running podcast, WTF with Marc Maron.
Maron said he ended up listening to Swift's Midnights album on a hike, and he was impressed with what her heard.
'I'm like, 'Alright. I get it.' It's pop music, but it's not dance music [and] it's, sort of, emotional. There's a lot of longing and sadness and isolation and processing these overwhelming feelings of melancholy," he recalled.
When previously discussing the new special, the comedian said, per Deadline, that he felt like 'this is the best work' he's ever done, adding, 'Everything came together."
Maron's latest creative endeavor comes two years after his last HBO special, the critically acclaimed From Bleak to Dark, which explored grief and the experience of losing his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marc Maron: Panicked premieres on HBO on Friday, Aug. 1, at 8:00 p.m. EST. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

Do I have to stick with one makeup look forever?

Photograph by Annie Collinge The other day I rode the underground opposite a teenage girl wearing burgundy eye makeup. As pleased as she appeared to be with herself, I'm going to posit she'll not be wearing the same in 10 years. In my case, after decades of wearing dark eyebrows, matte skin and a bold red lip, I recently noticed myself reflected in a shop window and saw a girl from the Addicted to Love video. It's not that I looked bad, or that I take issue with pop videos from the 1980s. But I'm emotionally interested in moving away from love addiction because I'm too old and tired for it, and I feel like my face is a good place to start. People are evangelical about Hailey Bieber's skincare line Rhode, which is interesting to me. On a trip to New York once, her father, Stephen Baldwin, tried to convert me to Christ. It was a lot to handle on a six-hour flight and I wondered what his daughter-entrepreneur, head of a cosmetics company now valued at $1bn, is processing from her childhood. Her father went from the performance of being an actor to the performance of being a pastor. I appreciate why her makeup line would be built on literal transparency. Rhode's glazing mist is where I start my post-Robert Palmer look. Then I add Trinny London's See the Light sunscreen, which is the best sunblock I've ever used. Under my eyes I use a concealer by Kosas – a peach that knocks out purple shadows. Then Hourglass's Phantom volumising glossy lip balm. Golden Hour Miracle Balm by Jones Road on my cheeks, forehead and the bridge of my nose. And Lisa Eldridge mascara in Burnt Umber. The new look I'm going for is 'middle-aged Raquel Welch making a yoga video at dawn on the beach' (a video I own and have studied). French brand Violette are mistresses of how to pull off any new look you want Encompassing both the teen on the train and Welch's minimalist high femme, French brand Violette are mistresses of how to pull off any new look you want. Maybe you've been wearing their Bisou Blush and are suddenly moved to wear on your lids their insanely pigmented Yeux Paint in electric Dieu Bleu. There may be a time and a place for everything, but I like the idea it's maybe not when you think. Maybe you wear technicolour blue lids to walk the dog, surprising and delighting people as you pass. My uncle used to mangle the phrase 'Who the hell does she think she is?' into 'She thinks who the hell she is.' That's Violette. In short, you only have to choose a look and stick with it for life if you have a terror of ageing. Truman Capote noted that his high-society 'swans' styled their hair and makeup far older than their years, so that as they aged people said: 'She looks exactly the same as she always did!' That depresses me. If you could walk alongside the ageing process, coaxing it to stand under flattering lamplight, your makeup options are really endless. On my radar… Powders, creams and serums to give you the edge Go with the glow This fantastic setting powder is from Saie's Slip Tint range. I don't know how they made a non-iridescent pressed powder look glowy, but it's so very pretty and yes, undetectable, too. With their concealer also a must-have for me, this clean brand is my favourite mid-priced makeup line. Saie Undetectable Baked Setting Powder, £26, Necks best thing It is empirically stupid to think that we need different things for different parts of our body. Will this culminate in a moisturiser for your ring finger? But The Elevator byTrinny London is intended to lift the appearance of your neck/décolletage and, like all her skincare – don't even get me started on the wonder of her Take Back Time vitality elixir – it really works. The Elevator Neck Cream, £68, Smooth operator Calecim Professional Serum is pink and tiny and lives a life of pious seclusion inside your fridge! The elasticity and smooth texture this serum gives your skin is like a magic trick. It's because of its patented stem cell PTT-6, but I'd rather believe it's because it's pink. Sarah Michelle Gellar Talks Her Surprise Return in I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER: 'It Was So Surreal' — GeekTyrant

If you thought Helen Shivers' story ended back in 1997, think again. Sarah Michelle Gellar made an unexpected return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise in the new sequel that recently hit theaters. The actress recently opened up about how it all came together, and why she never saw this coming. 'I don't think I had that one pegged,' Gellar said during an interview at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards in Los Angeles. Directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film follows a group of former high school friends being hunted by a killer one year after a fatal car accident, which is exactly the same setup of the original movie but with a fresh cast that includes Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers, Austin Nichols, Billy Campbell, and Gabriette. The script was co-written by Sam Lansky. I did not like the movie at all. But, I'm sure there are people that did like it and were excited to see Gellar return. According to Gellar, this cameo wasn't a last-minute idea. 'Jenn Robinson brought it up to me like three or four years ago – this has been a long process – I thought, 'It's such a good idea, but you don't know. Do people still love the movie? Do people still watch the movie?'' And even though Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt's involvement in the film was public knowledge, Gellar kept her lips sealed. At the recent premiere, she walked the red carpet but didn't give any interviews about the movie. Why? Because, despite Helen Shivers' brutal death in the first film, Gellar does return in a nightmare sequence. 'Jenn kept saying from the beginning to me, 'You have to do something,' and I said, 'I'm dead. I'm dead. This isn't supernatural.' She was like, 'I'm gonna figure it out.' And she did and it was brilliant.' Fans will recognize Helen instantly in the dream sequence belonging to Cline's character, Danica Richards. Gellar appears wearing her Croaker Queen crown and gown from the 1997 movie, and it was a moment that hit the actress hard. 'It was so surreal. When they put that on my head and they put the dress on and then I stood there – they had a picture of me from when I was the Croaker Queen [in 1997] next to it — I was like, 'Oh, this is crazy.'' The scene she's in quickly takes a dark turn. 'As the scene goes on, blood begins running down Helen's face before she starts to decompose,' Robinson told Variety. 'I wanted it to feel really unsettling. I wanted her to feel glowy and beautiful and effervescent and like the Helen Shivers that you remember, and then I wanted it to get darker and darker and darker as the scene progressed.' Gellar admitted she may have confused some fans by denying her involvement, but technically, she didn't lie. 'I've always said, 'I'm dead,'' she laughed. 'I did not lie. I do not lie. I am dead.' Prinze Jr., who returns as Ray in the new film, said he enjoyed keeping the secret under wraps. 'I'm pretty good at keeping secrets, so for me it's not hard,' he said at the premiere. 'But I had friends who were like, 'Come on, man, you could tell me. I was like 'I ain't telling you nothing, man. You gotta come see the movie just like everybody else.'' The new I Know What You Did Last Summer dropped in theaters this past weekend, and if you haven't seen it, don't waste your time. Source: Variety
