Teen hands mum's jewellery worth RM140,000 to scammers
PETALING JAYA : A teenager in Jertih, Terengganu, handed over her mother's jewellery worth RM140,000 to an unknown person after being deceived by members of a phone scam syndicate.
Besut deputy police chief Sani Salleh said the 18-year-old, who is awaiting admission to an institution of higher learning, lodged a report on July 12 claiming she had been duped by an unknown person.
'The teenager received phone calls from three people posing as representatives from Touch 'n Go's headquarters and a police officer from the Perak police headquarters on July 1.
'They claimed certain parties had misused her particulars. They also alleged she was involved in fraud and money laundering cases,' Bernama reported him as saying.
Sani said the victim, out of fear, handed over her mother's jewellery to the suspect at a meeting in a supermarket in Jertih town on July 2.
He said the suspect promised to return the jewellery on the same day, but later told the teenager the jewellery had been kept by the police's forensics unit for further investigation.
'The teenager was then told she would have to pay RM28,000 to retrieve the jewellery. She lodged a police report upon realising she had been duped,' he said.
Police arrested a 37-year-old woman in Kuala Besut yesterday and remanded her for four days until Friday to assist in investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Umno division chiefs ask AG to drop appeal against Najib's house arrest bid
Some of the 145 Umno division chiefs who had gathered at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur tonight. KUALA LUMPUR : Umno division chiefs have called on Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to drop his appeal against a Court of Appeal decision allowing former Umno president Najib Razak to initiate a judicial review related to a royal addendum allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The AG is appealing to set aside a majority 2-1 ruling on Jan 6 that allowed the former prime minister's application to adduce additional evidence and order the High Court to hear his judicial review. In a statement, they said that as the principal legal adviser to the government, the AG should 'uphold' the royal addendum and 'support justice'. The statement was issued on behalf of 160 Umno division chiefs, 145 of whom gathered at a hotel here tonight. They also proposed that all 191 Umno divisions nationwide that have yet to hold their conferences include a special motion on the addendum during their respective meetings. 'This motion is crucial as a show of party unity and solidarity in defending the institution of Malay rulers and upholding the principle of justice for all,' they said. The division chiefs also called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to implement the addendum. The Federal Court was told last Wednesday that AG Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. Najib wants the government to implement the order, dated Jan 29 last year, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest. The former prime minister learnt about the addendum soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term in connection with the SRC International case had been halved and his RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million.

JPJ finalising major Kejara system overhaul to get dangerous drivers off the road
BANGI, July 17 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is now in the final stage of reviewing new improvements in the Demerit Points System For Traffic Offences (Kejara), which is a safety mechanism to take serial offenders and dangerous drivers off the road. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the improvements that will be implemented are part of the massive overhaul of the Kejara system as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently. 'The Kejara system is currently in the final review stage at JPJ before we take it to the Transport Ministry for consideration on what improvements will be implemented to the new Kejara system,' he said. He said this at a press conference after an engagement session with the Association of Lorry Operators and Express Tourism Bus Operators on road safety initiatives here today. Aedy Fadly said the improvement aspects in this system need to go through a certain period of time because it also involves certain legal aspects and amendments. 'Amendments to the procedures will take time because it needs to go through higher levels such as the Attorney General and so on,' he said. Previously, Loke said Kejara would be overhauled soon because the system is currently ineffective and is deemed to be a failure. Loke said that previously, the deduction of demerit points would only be done after a traffic offender has paid the summons or has been charged in court and not when the summons notice is issued. The Kejara system is a procedure for assigning demerit points to motor vehicle drivers who commit scheduled offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the regulations thereunder. A total of 20 offences identified as potentially causing serious or fatal accidents and endangering other road users was included in the list of offences under the (new) demerit point system. Meanwhile, Aedy Fadly said holders of the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and Goods Vehicle Licence (GDL) who are involved in serious accidents will go through a certain process before a decision is made on whether the licence will be suspended. 'JPJ will not immediately suspend a licence. A show-cause notice will be issued first and an assessment will be made on whether or not suspension is necessary. The state JPJ director is authorised to make this decision,' he said. He said the suspension of licence will only involve PSV and GDL, not the Malaysian Driving Licence (LMMy) for the drivers involved. 'So far, five drivers have had their PSV licences suspended. It is not permanently suspended. It is temporary and comes with a specfic term and duration,' he said. Regarding today's engagement session, he said JPJ informed stakeholders about the progress of efforts so far to improve road safety. 'The participants have given very positive feedback and asked that JPJ regularly hold town hall discussions, which we initiated for the first time this year. 'My team and I have agreed to hold this town hall dialogues periodically at the request of the industry,' he said. — Bernama

NationGate says MACC probe not linked to top brass, core business
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — NationGate Holdings Bhd clarified that the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is limited to its subsidiary NationGate Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. In a Bursa Malaysia filing today, the electronics manufacturing services company said that an order to inspect, search and seize under Section 31(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 from MACC was issued to NationGate Solution. 'To our best knowledge, the raid does not involve any specific board members or senior management. 'NationGate Solution is not a major subsidiary pursuant to the definition given in the Main Market Listing Requirements of Bursa Securities,' it said. It added that for the time being, the MACC raid is not expected to have significant financial and operational impact on the group.
