Over 2,400 air guns surrendered under Arunachal's wildlife conservation drive
Chief minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday hailed the initiative, calling it a model for the rest of the country. Launched in March 2021 at Lumdung village in East Kameng district when 46 air guns were surrendered, the campaign has since seen widespread participation across districts.
The movement encourages individuals to relinquish air guns and licensed firearms to curb the hunting of birds and small wildlife. According to officials, the initiative has led to a noticeable resurgence in bird populations in areas where such sightings had become rare.
The programme, initiated under the 'PEMA 3.0 – Year of Reforms & Growth' campaign, gained significant momentum under the leadership of former Environment and Forest Minister Mama Natung and CM Khandu. District-level awareness campaigns were organised in collaboration with local communities, NGOs, and administrative departments, resulting in the surrender of 2,400 air guns and nine licensed guns, besides power chain saw machines.
The initiative has earned national and international recognition. It was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 84th episode of his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' in December 2021 and also featured at a UNESCO International Conference on Biosphere Reserves as one of India's most promising conservation efforts.
CM Khandu, in a social media post, said the campaign reflects Arunachal Pradesh's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity, which includes several endangered bird species.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Lok Sabha MP Tapir Gao will attend the 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama in Dharamshala . The two-day celebration will be held on July 5 and 6. Around 30,000 to 40,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations. The Dalai Lama is the most prominent figure in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, Tenzin Gyatso , the 14th Dalai Lama, had an emotional reunion in 2017 in Guwahati with Naren Chandra Das, an Assam Rifles jawan who received him after his escape from Tibet in March 1959. Das, a member of the 5th Assam Rifles battalion, had escorted the Dalai Lama to Balipara in Assam. Live Events Dharamshala is also hosting an international Buddhist conference, bringing together senior monks and scholars from various traditions. The event will conclude with an address by the Dalai Lama, in which he is expected to speak about the future of the Tibetan reincarnation tradition. Khandu has previously highlighted the deep historical and spiritual links between India and Tibet, particularly through Buddhism.

Lawmakers on Thursday urged government officials to intensify awareness campaigns against digital arrests — a relatively new form of cybercrime that has seen a sharp rise in recent times. The agency also maintained that unless such cases are specifically referred by states, or entrusted by high courts or the Supreme Court, the bureau 'lacks the jurisdictional mandate to proceed' as the IT law, 2000 requires it to obtain the state's consent to undertake investigations. In March, the government made a submission to the Rajya Sabha that digital arrests and related cybercrimes have almost tripled in the country between 2022 and 2024, with defrauded amounts skyrocketing by 21 times during the period. Functionaries said that MPs insisted on more awareness campaigns. One of the MPs pointed out that even when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked people to protect themselves against digital arrest, awareness drives lack momentum. In his Mann Ki Baat address on October 27 last year, Modi told people that Indian law doesn't have any provision for digital arrest and that government agencies will never contact people via video calls or phone calls for any investigation. During the meeting, MPs suggested that government agencies should consider campaigns in cinema halls, OTT platforms and popular TV channels. They also urged the government to conduct awareness drives in schools and colleges to educate young people. According to a PIB press release on March 2025, the Centre had launched 'a comprehensive awareness programme on digital arrest scams which, inter-alia, include; newspaper advertisement, announcement in Delhi Metros, use of social media influencers to create special posts, campaign through Prasar Bharti and electronic media, special programme on Aakashvani and participated in Raahgiri Function at Connaught Place'.

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General K.T. Parnaik (Retd) on Thursday urged legislators to prioritise land reforms, enact robust legislation for solid waste management, hygiene, and sanitation, and promote policies that truly empower women, upholding their rights, and increasing their participation in public life. Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the state legislative assembly at DK Auditorium, the Governor said that the people faced the uphill task of building a state virtually from scratch, amidst rugged mountains, scattered habitations, and challenging terrain, but through vision, perseverance, and people-centric legislation, they have ensured that Arunachal Pradesh did not follow the path of instability and insurgency that troubled some of the sister states in the northeast. Instead, we chose peace, inclusivity, and unity in diversity, he said. The Governor said that today, people are witnessing a transformative phase in the state's evolution, marked by better administrative outreach and improved service delivery. Governance is becoming more responsive, more citizen-centric, and more in tune with the needs of the people, he said. The Governor, while citing landmark legislation, said that the Assembly has played a pivotal role in this transformation, not merely by passing laws, but by shaping a vision for the future.
