Huge 90s band Ace Of Base now from Eurovision failure to extremist gang regrets
From being involved in a far-right extremist gang to failing to qualify for Eurovision, the members of hit 90s group Ace of Base have been on quite the journey during their lifetime...
Behind some of the best Europop songs of the 90s, Ace of Base have had a wild history. From humble beginnings in Sweden to gangland threats and even an unsuccessful Eurovision attempt, their story has everything...
The Scandinavian electro-pop group was first formed in 1987 in Gothenberg, and was made up of siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren with the quartet then being completed with founding member Ulf Ekberg.
The group began working their way around the clubs of the Swedish city but struggled to take off, with heavy metal being the go-to for Swedes at the time, a far cry from the techno sound. But, after the release of the single Wheel of Fortune broke them into the charts, their next release, All that She Wants, would make them a hit across the world, as the track became certified platinum topping the UK charts for three weeks straight in 1993.
They would continue to build on their success with hits like The Sign, becoming staples of clubs across the world in the early 90s. But, just as quickly as they shot to fame, they would as quickly disappear into obscurity.
The group were last seen in a series of concerts between 2007 and 2009 as a trio without Linn, but since then the band's original members have all gone down some very different paths:
Jenny Berggren
After leaving the band in the late 00s, Jenny was the only member to continue recording music with a solo career, as well as turning to writing. In 2009 she published her autobiography, Vinna hela världen, and although an English version translated to 'To Win the World' was due to be released, it never came to fruition.
In 2010 she released her first single, Here I Am, which only reached 14 on the Swedish charts before releasing her second single, Gotta Go, and her first album My Story that same year.
The same year she was in the running to be the Danish contestant for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest with her song, Let Your Heart B Mine, but she failed to get through and gain the nomination for the country to go to the event. She also appeared alongside Ulf in the 2024 for the Ace of Base: All That She Wants documentary looking at the band's story. In the show, she also recounts a scary experience when a fan broke into her home and held a knife to her throat in the early '90s
Speaking to People about the ordeal, she said: 'I think that was when the star was born in me. I wanted to sing. I had to calculate with all the dangers, and I just realised, 'No, I want to sing. This is what I want'.'
Ulf Ekberg
Founder Ulf Ekberg has found himself working with and trying to grow tech start ups in Sweden. Speaking to ABC, the former musician said: "There's so many tech companies in Sweden, especially Stockholm.
"I'm interested in creating a sector in technology and music. I'm building companies, and it's been a fantastic last five years. It feels like everything is exploding here. We are in a lot of different sectors, but we try to keep it to the creative sectors as much as possible; movies, TV, music and entertainment, which are obviously very close to my heart."
In last year's documentary, Ulf also talks about his involvement with the far-right extremist gang in Sweden as a teenager, something that has shown his deep regret for. In the People interview, he added: 'I think it's a very important topic to talk about because it is a very angry world we live in right now. It's much more angry than when I was a teenager.
'I hope that maybe that part of this documentary can show that even if you are completely lost, you can always find your way and it's never too late — which, I was blessed with a second chance in my life."
Jonas and Linn Berggren
Since the end of the band, two have stepped back away from the public eye with Linn in particular staying away from the spotlight of fame. Jonas made a very brief appearance at an event covered at the end of the documentary, while Linn chose to write a letter which Jenny reads in the final episode.
The band however did come back together for a one-off reunion on their 30th anniversary. To the delight of many fans, they came back to headline the 90s Nostalgic Electric Circus festival in Canada dressed up in black lace and flower-inspired outfits.

Sam Ryder 'stoked' for Glastonbury Festival performance
Eurovision star Sam Ryder has said appearing at Glastonbury Festival is his chance to "put a flag in the ground and stand behind" what he has been working on. The star has been spotted a number of times in the lead up to his set, from popping up on a train to giving an impromptu performance at "surprise shows".He will be playing the Avalon Stage at 19:50 BST and said: "There can't be any kind of approach of any arrogance to this sort of thing. "It's about singing your heart out and finding the intention of what being here is, of what you're trying to say and I'm stoked for that." The 36-year-old added he had come across a video of himself from two years ago, chatting about "how much of a dream it would be to play the festival". Iconic star, 99, sparks concern after dropping out of event last-minute due to i
Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke has sparked health concerns after he dropped out of a fundraising event at the last minute. The 99-year-old star of stage and screen was scheduled to appear at his musical fundraiser Vandy Camp on Saturday, along with wife and co-host Arlene Silver. Hosted by the pair, the event is described as a 'whimsical, vintage circus experience,' with a focus on community and togetherness. However, he was a no-show at this weekend's event, with Arlene, 53, taking to the stage in his absence to explain that he was not 'having a good day.' Appearing at the Arlene & Dick Van Dyke Theatre at Malibu High school, Alrene joked that she was 'not the Van Dyke you're expecting.' She then broke the news to attendees that her husband wouldn't be joining them all, saying: 'I have to inform you that Dick is not up to coming to celebrate with us today. I'm sorry.' As reported by People, Arlene revealed that her soon-to-be 100-year-old husband was suffering a 'bad day,' hence the no-show. 'When you're 99 and a half years old, you have good days and bad days…' she began. 'And unfortunately, today is not a good day for him, and he's sick that he can't be here.' The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star did, however, make an appearance via livestream ahead of reassurances that he would attend the next Vandy Camp in person. Ahead of his 100th birthday this December, Dick opened up about the 'curse' of living to such an advanced age. Reflecting on his life and career in showbusiness, Dick explained that he was explained that he was set to team up with Ed Asher for a remake of beloved sitcom The Odd Couple. However, Ed died in 2021, at the age of 91, before they could begin work on the project. 'That would've been such fun, and we lost it. I've lost a lot of friends,' he said at a Vandy Camp event earlier this year. 'He's outlived everybody,' noted Arlene 'That's the curse of living to almost 100.' However, the Diagnosis Murder actor keeps a positive outlook on life, saying: 'Well, life's been good to me. I can't complain.' Speaking to People Magazine, he spoke of why he kept working, eight decades after he first made his showbusiness debut. 'I'm a ham,' he admitted. 'I love it. I get a jolt of energy from an audience.' Dick's gargantuan career has earned him four Emmys, a Tony for Bye Bye Birdy, and a Grammy award for his work on the Mary Poppins soundtrack with Julie Andrews. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Television Hall Of Fame in 1995. Only last year, he made history by becoming the oldest ever Daytime Emmy winner – taking home the gong for his guest spot on Days of Our Lives, aged 98. More Trending For a brief run of episodes, he played amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux – agreeing to appear on the long-running American soap opera after a friend suggested he should take part. 'I said great and it snowballed into this,' the star quipped at the award ceremony, while performing a jig with his newly acquired hardware. 'I'm 98 years old. Can you believe it?' Got a story? X Factor star 'splits from husband of eight years' after meeting on the show as she makes her Glastonbury Festival debut
X Factor stars Lucie Jones and Ethan Boroian have reportedly split after eight years together. The former couple first met during auditions on the talent show in 2009, and later got together, although reports have suggested the pair are no longer together. And now Lucie, 34, is making her Glastonbury debut this weekend following the alleged split. Sources say the couple are now going through a divorce, and Lucie no longer follows her husband on social media. It's claimed that they have 'grown apart' in their relationship, with Lucie and Ethan marrying at a young age and now realising their focus has changed. MailOnline have contacted Lucie's reps for comment. A source told The Sun: 'She has been busy focusing on pursuing her career on the West End stage and travelling the globe, they're moving on with their lives. 'Lucie's in a really good place and has already moved on and met someone else and has loved performing at Glastonbury.' They added: 'Ethan is no longer in showbusiness and their lives were headed in different directions.' The singer's first appearance at Glastonbury took place this weekend at Worthy Farm. Lucie admitted she was 'delighted to be involved' ahead of the three-day stint. The pop star previously represented the UK in Eurovision, and credited the contest for 'changing her life.' She also revealed she still keeps in touch with people on the show, including Joe McElderry, who Lucie is heading to Ibiza with. Last month, Lucie announced the exciting news on Instagram with her official Glastonbury poster. 'Worthy Farm, here I come. I'm so ridiculously excited to share that I will be performing at Glasto 2025,' she wrote. 'Joined by a band led by the unmatched @jonrangerinsta and guided as always by the best of the best @noisebyjonny. 'I'm there to make some festival history in being the first musical theatre artist ever to perform at the festival. 'Cannot wait to see the happiest people in the world - the glasto ticket holders - at Astrolabe on Thurs Fri and Sat! Let's all defy gravity in a field together babyyyyyyyyy!!' After she was voted out of the X Factor, Lucie went on to find huge success in musical theatre. The young star played Cosette in Les Miserables opposite Nick Jonas and performed the role of Meat in the 2013 Arena Tour of We Will Rock You. In 2016, she played Elle Woods in the UK Tour of Legally Blonde the Musical and was cast as Maureen Johnson in Rent.
