Sabah Government backs wildlife film to boost tourism

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has expressed its support for the forthcoming wildlife feature film Agatis: A Borneo Story.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said her ministry, through the Sabah Wildlife Department, would provide assistance to ensure the success of the 90-minute film, which she saidclaimed had the potential to enhance wildlife tourism in the state.
'Agatis: A Borneo Story is a feature film that highlights the plight of the endangered Bornean pygmy elephants, and would be the first film in Malaysia to be shot in the vicinity of these majestic creatures,' she said after attending a presentation about the movie on Monday (June 23).
Also present was the state's wildlife department director, Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar.
The movie would feature two baby elephants: Agatis, a four-year-old female, and Aki, a two-year-old male, both from the Borneo Elephant Sanctuary (BES) in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Agatis: A Borneo Story follows the journey of two young orphans, a boy named Dhiren and Agatis, a Bornean pygmy elephant. Together, they form a unique bond in the enchanting Bornean jungle and unite to protect Agatis's species from poachers.
Its director and producer, Jeanette Chong Tze Ling, said she intends to screen the movie in cinemas and at international film festivals.
She also thanked the ministry and the department for their support.
When asked about casting plans, Chong said Sandakan was prioritised due to its proximity to Kinabatangan.
'We're planning an open casting for children in Sandakan this July. We're also open to involving more local NGOs and communities in Kinabatangan,' she added.
Filming is expected to begin once funding is secured, with a target date of mid-August or September.

Sabah showcases cultural pride and unity in Jelajah Sabah 2025

KOTA KINABALU (June 24): Jelajah Sabah 2025 proudly celebrated the spirit of community, culture and tourism — with strong backing from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah — further reinforcing Sabah's identity as one of Malaysia's must-visit travel destinations. Norseti Setini Binti Stil from Kota Kinabalu and Mohd Syahrul Mansur (Tawau), who officially completed their road registrations, each won the main prize of a motorcycle. Organised by Discover Sabah Digital Sdn Bhd, Jelajah Sabah 2025 concluded triumphantly this May after a vibrant series of cultural and tourism-centric events held across Sabah. The campaign was led with unwavering support from Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, whose dedication from the outset helped drive the program's success. The journey began in Tawau from May 16–18 at Kubota Square, where the launch was officiated by Tawau member of parliament Datuk Lo Su Fui, JP. In collaboration with the Tawau Municipal Council, a special cultural excursion to Kampung Balung Kokos was included — providing guests with a rich, authentic village experience and direct engagement with the local community. This cultural journey was captured using Virtual Reality (VR) — allowing others to explore the village's beauty from anywhere. After delivering his opening address, Lo donned the VR headset, becoming one of the first to explore the digital tour. Local artists including Pink, as well as performers and visitors, echoed the sentiment: it was their first time touring with VR — a groundbreaking addition that was later brought to Kota Kinabalu as well. Regatta Lepa more than just a celebration: Liew Kota Kinabalu: The annual Regatta Lepa festival in Semporna is not merely a cultural and tourism event but also a symbol of identity, artistry and harmony of the State's diverse communities. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said this year's event, its 30th edition with the theme Marian Addat Bangsa Ta or Our Cultural Festival, would be a historic milestone.
