Amitabh Bachchan Was 'Thrown Out' Of A Film, Replaced By Sanjay Khan: Recalls Raza Murad
Raza Murad said 90% luck drives success in films. He recalled how Amitabh Bachchan was replaced by Sanjay Khan in a movie after 16 flops, before Zanjeer changed it all.
Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer remains one of the most iconic films in Amitabh Bachchan's career to this day. The film marked the second inning of Big B's career after back-to-back 16 flop films. The Salim-Javed written movie gave hope to Bachchan and got him all the success and a string of hits like Deewar, Sholay, among others. While Big B's stardom is what almost everyone wishes for in the industry, Raza Murad believes it was his luck that made him who he is today.
In a recent interview with The Filmy Charcha, Raza Murad claimed that one needs 90% luck to make it big in the industry. While citing Amitabh Bachchan's example, Murad revealed that the former was thrown out of Duniya Ka Mela and shared, 'Amitabh Bachchan was thrown out of Duniya Ka Mela. The makers replaced him with Sanjay Khan. Sixteen of his films flopped. Distributors said nobody will turn up to theatres if he stars in a film. At that time, his luck was not with him. But when the luck was in his favour, everything fell in place."
He explained, 'When Prakash Mehra wanted to make Zanjeer, he went to Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra, Dev Anand, Rajkumar, and they all refused for some or the other reason. The subject was extremely hero-oriented, yet these superstars rejected it. Nobody knows why, but one can say that luck wanted Amitabh Bachchan to lead the film. When nobody wanted him, and Prakash Mehra had no option, Jaya Bachchan (then Jaya Bhaduri) recommended the director take Amitabh Bachchan — and the rest is history."
Zanjeer marked a major breakthrough not just for Amitabh Bachchan, but also for the legendary writing duo Salim-Javed. The film's iconic character Sher Khan, portrayed by Pran in his signature Pathani look, also left a lasting impact. With punchy lines like 'Yeh police station hai, tumhare baap ka ghar nahin," Zanjeer firmly cemented its place in Bollywood's pop culture legacy.
Zanjeer follows the story of an honest cop Vijay, haunted by his parents' murder and a recurring nightmare. As he battles the crime world, he finds allies in reformed gangster Sher Khan and Mala.

Ishaan Khatter recalls pulling Amitabh Bachchan's beard on the set of Sooryavansham: ‘I was calling Bade Miyan'
On a lazy afternoon, if you flip through TV channels and land on Set Max, chances are you'll find Amitabh Bachchan's Sooryavansham playing. Though the film didn't do well in theatres when it was released in 1999, it has gained a cult following over the years. Those who grew up in the early 2000s watched Big B in a double role in the movie, but for actor Ishaan Khatter, the experience was more personal. He actually visited the sets of the film as a child, thanks to his mother, Neelima Azeem, who was part of the film's cast. Neelima Azeem played Mrs Varun Singh in the movie, while Ishaan's father, Rajesh Khattar, played her on-screen husband. In a recent chat with Mid-Day, Ishaan shared a sweet story from his childhood. 'I think my mom once did a children's show called Nayantara, and I appeared on it too. It was a talk show where she spoke about parenting and motherhood. I've always been fascinated by film sets. She once took me to the sets of Sooryavansham, and apparently, I kept saying 'Bade Miyan, Bade Miyan' to Amitabh Bachchan, because I had seen Bade Miyan Chote Miyan,' he laughed. But what happened next made the memory unforgettable. Ishaan said, 'He (Amitabh Bachchan) picked me up! And my mom later told me, 'You were the only kid he lifted, and you pulled his beard!' And he just smiled and said, 'It's okay.' These are the stories I've grown up hearing from my mom.' 'At the time, she was trying to get me admitted into a school and Jamnabai was then one of the nicest schools. She was having trouble getting admission for me there and he very kindly, personally went and spoke to the authorities,' he said.

Rekha once kissed Abhishek Bachchan at an award show; Amitabh Bachchan's reaction sitting next to Aishwarya Rai was... Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's love story with Umraoo Jaan actress Rekha is one of the most-discussed about topics in Bollywood's history. Both of them collaborated in several iconic movies such as Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Do Anjaane and Mr. Natwarlal . But, after Silsila , the two stopped working and were only spotted at award shows or other public occasions. However, there was a time when Rekha surprised everyone when she shared a warm hug with actor Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan at an award show. What was Amitabh Bachchan's reaction when Rekha kissed Abhishek? Rekha, known for her affectionate and warm personality, reportedly greeted Abhishek with a kiss, while Amitabh Bachchan was sitting next to her daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Although Big B's expression was normal, but he did observe the kiss and chose not to react. At the award function, Rekha wore a stunning mustard-yellow sequin saree. She bended over and rested her hand over Abhishek's cheeks, who was seen decked up in a black suit. Aishwarya, who was sitting next to Amitabh, looked ethereal in a black shimmery saree, paired with a sleeveless blouse and middle-parted sleek bun. Big B, on other hand, was twinning with his son, in a formal black suit. Was Rekha truly in love with Amitabh Bachchan? In 2004, Rekha dropped an interesting bomb when she attended Simi Garewal's talk show Rendezvous. When asked Rekha if she was ever in love with Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran actress had admitted, 'Absolutely. Duh, that's a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? I'm not in love with him? Of course I am. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.' At the same time, Rekha also denied being in a relationship with him, addressing all the rumours and controversies. 'There was never a personal connection with him, that's truth. Never ever. There was no truth to the controversies and speculation.' She had said.
