Calcutta HC to hear primary teachers' termination appeals on Apr 28
The matter was mentioned on Monday (April 21, 2025) before a division bench, comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, before which the appeals were assigned by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam after another bench released the matter.

The division bench said that the appeals by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and others, including some of those who were recruited, challenging the termination of jobs of primary teachers by a single bench, will appear before it on April 28 for hearing.
Releasing the matter from its court on April 7, a division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De directed that the appeals be placed before Chief Justice Sivagnanam for assignment to a different bench.
The division bench cited "personal reason" of Justice Sen for releasing the matter from its list for hearing.
A single bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had on May 12, 2023, ordered the cancellation of the appointment of around 32,000 candidates who had not completed the teachers' training course when they were recruited as primary teachers through a selection process in 2016 on the basis of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2014.
A division bench had later stayed the single bench order terminating the jobs of around 32,000 teachers in West Bengal government-run and aided primary schools.

No resumption of MGNREGA work in West Bengal despite HC order says PBKMS
Despite an order by the Calcutta High Court, to resume MGNREGA in West Bengal from August 1, there has been no resumption of 100 days work, Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity, a union of agricultural workers, said on Friday (August 1, 2025). Hearing a petition of PBKMS a division bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by T.S. Sivagnanam on June 18 directed the resumption of the scheme from August 1 'Yet, even after this landmark victory for rural workers, both the Central and State governments have chosen to brazenly defy the Court's order. Instead of preparing for the resumption of work, block offices in multiple districts are refusing to even accept job applications. This is a deliberate attack on the right to work of the state's poorest,' a press statement by PBKMS said. The union also added that job applications by people made under MGNREGA have been rejected. 'In just four days, between 28th and 31st July 2025, 2,092 job applications were submitted across block offices in Purulia, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas districts. Meanwhile, job applications from 1,349 workers were illegally rejected in 9 block offices across 7 districts,' the union said. A representative of PBKMS said that when they contacted the NREGA Commissioner, he clearly stated that no work will begin unless the Central Government issues fresh instructions - a position that clearly undermines the authority of the Calcutta High Court. Alleging willful inaction by both the governments, the union stated that the Central Government is equally guilty and by hiding behind Section 27 of the MGNREGA Act, 'it continues to block the release of funds and work, systematically depriving Bengal's workers of their legal right to employment'. The workers union also claimed that in Nadia district's Krishnagar-II block, when a member of the union accompanied workers to submit job applications, the BDO and several panchayat pradhans responded with abuse and threats, calling him a 'Bangladeshi' and threatening him with arrest and punitive action. Demanding the immediate implementation of MGNREGA work in West Bengal, as per the High Court order, the PBKMS stated that this blatant 'non-compliance with a High Court order is illegal, unjust, and unacceptable and it continue our struggle for the right to work in every village and every district'. Before the Lok Sabha polls in 2024, the Trinamool Congress along with MGNREGA workers held protests in Delhi demanding payment of wages and resumption of work. However, West Bengal's ruling party response to the High Court order has been lukewarm. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said her government has started Karmashree Prakalpa to provide at least 50 days of wage employment to each Job Card holder household in a financial year. The scheme, however, is not visible at the grass roots level .Work under MGNREGA had stopped in the State since December 2021 which has resulted in widespread rural distress and migration.

WBJEE 2025 Results To Be Declared On August 7, Confirms Board
Last Updated: WBJEE board chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee informed reporters that the results will be declared on August 7. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE) announced on Thursday that the results for this year's entrance exam will be released on August 7, following a delay of over a month. The results publication was enabled by the Supreme Court's July 28 order, which stayed the Calcutta High Court's previous decision to halt the implementation of a revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) notified by the state government. WBJEE board chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee informed reporters that the results will be declared on August 7, reported PTI. 'From today (July 31), candidates will have to upload details about their caste category certificate in the relevant section of WBJEE portal till August 2. The board will sort out the data and incorporate updates of every candidate before coming up with the results," she stated. 'We are sure the process (of uploading details) will be over by the stipulated time and the results will be published on August 7," the WBJEE chairperson added. A senior higher education department official explained, 'The decision to update every candidate's profile with caste category details have been taken after consulting legal experts." The WBJEE exam took place on April 27. On July 28, a Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria, during the hearing of the state government's appeal, vacated the high court's stay and remarked that 'prima facie, the high court order seems to be erroneous." On June 17, the Calcutta High Court had issued an interim stay on notifications by the state government regarding reservations to 140 subsections under OBC-A and OBC-B categories, the report added. The state had prepared the new list after the high court, in May 2024, nullified the inclusion of 77 communities in the OBC list. Steps to Check WBJEE 2025 Results: Step 1. With eye on Assembly polls, West Bengal CM hikes honorarium to community Durga Pujas by 30 %
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday hiked the honorarium to community Durga Pujas in the state to ₹1.10 lakhs marking an almost 30 % increase from the ₹85,000 given to puja community last year. The hike in honorarium to community Durga Pujas months ahead of Assembly polls in the State, evoked strong reaction from Opposition parties who described it as a 'bribe' by the West Bengal's ruling party. Ms. Banerjee said that the number of Durga Puja clubs which organise community Puja in West Bengal is about 45,000 and going by the numbers the honorarium is going to cost ₹495 crore to the State exchequer. The Chief Minister also urged electricity supply companies to give 80 % rebate to the clubs organising Puja and said that all government 'Last year the sum was ₹85,000, this year how much you want. Should it be ₹90,000, ₹95,000, One lakh. Ok let us fix it is ₹1.10 lakh this year,' she announced amidst applause from Durga Puja organisers at a gathering in Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium. Highlighting that Durga Puja is the festival which is close to the hearts of every resident of the State, the Chief Minister told organisers that their focus should be crowd management and clubs should not compete with each other to draw large crowds. Ms. Banerjee advised the clubs to engage more volunteers and have separate entry and exits in Durga Puja pandals. The Durga Puja festival will be held in the last week of September and the Durga Puja Carnival will be held on October 5. Ms. Banerjee urged the Durga Puja organisers to help the migrant workers who have returned to the State after facing harassment in BJP-ruled States. 'I request Durga Puja committees to help migrant workers, who are returning to Bengal after facing torture in BJP-ruled states.' Opposition asks CM to release Dearness Allowance Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said that the Chief Minister can pay ₹2 lakhs to Durga Puja but before that she should pay the Dearness Allowance (DA) to employees. 'She should increase the salary of ICDS, Angandwadi workers, civic police volunteers and other contractual staff,' Mr. Adhikari said. The LOP predicted that before the Assembly polls Ms. Banerjee will hike the honorarium given to imams and muezzins by ₹500. The honorarium to Durga Puja clubs has on several occasions been challenged before the Calcutta High Court and the State government's argument has been that the funds are to increase awareness on several issues including Safe Drive Safe Life. The Mamata Banerjee government had introduced honorarium to committees organising Durga Puja in 2018 promising a sum of ₹10,000 to each club. In seven years the grant has increased by 11 times. Last year Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T.S. Sivagnanam had told Advocate General Kishore Dutta, representing the West Bengal government, that the state should consider giving ₹10 lakh to each organiser as that would be commensurate to conducting the puja, saying that ₹85,000 is nothing compared to the expenditure required to celebrate the Durga puja.
