‘Nobody has bigger expectations than I do': New coach Mike Brown leads Knicks into new era
The appointment was confirmed this week, with Knicks President Leon Rose commenting: 'Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization.'
The Knicks will face the Philadelphia 76ers in two NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2025 preseason matchups on Oct. 2 and 4. The NBA and the Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi announced that the games, presented by ADQ, will take place at Yas Island's Etihad Arena. While Abu Dhabi has hosted NBA preseason action since 2022, this will be New York's first appearance in Abu Dhabi.
Brown takes charge following the Knicks' strongest season in decades. Under Tom Thibodeau, the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, reigniting hopes of a return to championship contention. Still, the front office felt a fresh voice was needed to elevate the team further.
Speaking on his appointment, Brown said: 'Nobody has bigger expectations, first of all, than I do. My expectations are high. This is the Knicks. I talked about Madison Square Garden being iconic. I talked about our fans. I love and embrace the expectations that come along with it. I'm looking forward to it.'
A seasoned veteran, Brown has coached an elite roster of talent throughout his career. As head coach, he worked with NBA legends LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, and as an assistant, he coached NBA all-time greats, including Stephen Curry and Tim Duncan. He led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals, won four NBA championships as an assistant, and earned Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and 2023.
Now, he takes over a Knicks team brimming with championship aspirations, aiming to capture their first title since 1973. Leading the charge are two-time All-Star Jalen Brunson, five-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns, and 2022 NBA All-Defensive First Team member Mikal Bridges.
'Our goal is to build a sustainable, winning culture that produces championships,' Brown said. 'That's why I'm here.'
The 76ers, their Abu Dhabi opponents, boast a powerful roster that includes 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, nine-time All-Star Paul George, and 2024 All-Star Tyrese Maxey. These NBA Abu Dhabi Games present a valuable opportunity for Brown to build chemistry, test rotations, and get the roster in sync ahead of the regular season.

AL-AIN: The curtain came down on Sunday on the inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025 with Emirati clubs sweeping the top three positions. Dubai, Abu Dhabi to host T20 Asia Cup matches
Dubai and Abu Dhabi will be the host cities for the men's Twenty20 Asia Cup, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan to meet in Dubai on September 14. The tournament in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled to run from September 9 to 28, will feature eight teams — two more than the last edition — with 11 matches in Dubai and eight in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi will host the opener between Afghanistan and Hong Kong, while the final will be held in Dubai. Luka Doncic agrees to a contract extension through 2028 with the Lakers, committing to his new team

He envisions his name and number in the rafters alongside every other transcendent great to wear the Lakers' gold jersey. So Doncic took the next step toward turning his dreams into reality Saturday when he agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension through 2028 with the Lakers, bypassing a chance at free agency next summer. 'Being a Laker is an honor, and I wanted to be here,' Doncic said during a news conference under the title banners and retired numbers festooning the gym at the Lakers' training complex. 'When you look up here, so many great names and what they've achieved. I want to be up there too one day.' The deal should keep the 26-year-old Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028 under a player option for the final season, after which he'll be eligible for a massive five-year extension that could allow him to recoup the max money he lost by getting traded by Dallas. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the terms to The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Lakers don't publicly announce the details of contracts. The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis. The five-time All-NBA selection and a five-time All-Star averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season while teaming up with LeBron James for 50 victories and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Although his debut season in Los Angeles ended with a first-round playoff loss to Minnesota, the high-scoring guard says he greatly enjoyed his first months in Hollywood — enough to commit to the Lakers for the rest of his 20s, and almost certainly beyond. 'It's an honor playing for this organization,' Doncic said. 'Many, many great players played here, so obviously I want to add one more up there. That's what we're working for.' 'All the interactions we've had with LeBron and his camp have been positive and supportive,' Pelinka said when asked if he thought the Lakers would be James' final team. 'The dialogue with him has been open and constant. … The No. 1 thing we have to do (with James' future) is respect him and his family's decision. We want to respect his opportunity to come up with his timetable on that. If he had a chance to retire as a Laker, that would be great.' Doncic's comfort with the Lakers was already obvious in his offseason activity: He played a significant role in Los Angeles' successful bids to sign Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, helping to persuade the two veterans to team up with him for the upcoming season. Doncic said he campaigned with both players because he respected them as opponents. Ayton, Smart and several other Lakers showed up in El Segundo to congratulate Doncic on his new deal.
