Gone are the days of Tom Thibodeau leading the team. He was fired after the Knicks failed to defeat the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. To replace Thibodeau, New York went out and brought in Mike Brown. He will have a completely different philosophy than the one that the Knicks have seen in recent years. Under Thibodeau, New York did not utilize much depth. He rode his starters hard, which resulted in injury issues quite often. With Brown leading the charge, the Knicks will need a much more rounded roster. Keeping that in mind, the Knicks have now been linked to two intriguing potential targets late in the free agency market. There are still some good players available for New York to take a look at. During a segment of his "The Zach Lowe Show," Zach Lowe spoke out with two potential targets to watch for the team. "They [Knicks] only have 12 players on the team right now... They literally, by law of the NBA, have to sign more players," Lowe said. "I would keep my eye out on [Landry] Shamet. I would keep my eye out on [Malcolm] Brogdon, who both could be helpful." Brogdon would be the bigger addition of the two players. He played in 24 games and made 13 starts with the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds. If fully healthy, he can make a bigger impact than that. Read more: Report: Warriors Receive Massive Jonathan Kuminga Update Shamet, on the other hand, played the 2024-25 season with the Knicks. He appeared in 50 games, averaging 5.7 points and shooting 39.7 percent from the three-point line. It will be interesting to see what New York chooses to do to round out its roster. Brogdon would be a very intriguing pickup who could make a major impact off of the bench. Shamet could add perimeter shooting. Expect to hear more about the Knicks in the near future. With a need for at least two more players, both of these names are worth keeping an eye on. For more on the New York Knicks and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

New York Knicks Get Major LeBron James Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Knicks made a run all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals last season, but came up short against the Indiana Pacers. Moving forward, the franchise is focused on winning a championship. With that being said, the Knicks have come up as a potential suitor for LeBron James. As his situation with the Los Angeles Lakers seemingly continues to sour, James has been rumored to be a potential trade candidate this year or at least a free agency option next offseason. New York has been rumored as a potential fit for James down the road. More Photo byEven though the Knicks have been talked about as a potential suitor for the longtime superstar, they may be facing an uphill battle to make that happen. Read more: Report: 76ers Receive Very Concerning Joel Embiid Update CBS Sports analyst Sam Quinn took a look at New York's future as a potential James suitor. He offered an honest outlook for the team. "As of right now, New York has around $46 million in second-apron space. However, that doesn't account for the new deals we expect Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson to sign between now and next summer," Quinn wrote. "If both are long-term Knicks, New York will blow past the second apron and only have a minimum to offer. If James is open to the minimum, and that's already a stretch, wouldn't he be likelier to take it in Cleveland than New York? In this scenario, the Knicks would be fighting an uphill battle." Assuming James does become a free agent next offseason, quite a few teams would have interest in him. Among those teams could be the Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. There is also a chance that he could have interest in signing with whoever drafts his younger son, Bryce James, who is eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft. Read more: NBA Insider Issues Massive Lakers, LeBron James Future Prediction James is still capable of playing like one of the best players in the league. During the 2024-25 NBA season, he averaged 24.4 points per game to go along with 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal. In addition, he also shot 51.3 percent from the floor and 37.6 percent from three-point range. At 40 years old, James has not talked about when he plans to retire. It's possible the 2025-26 season could be his last, but playing another year still seems to be the most likely scenario. Expect to continue hearing rumors about James and his future throughout the entire year. New York will also likely continue being connected as a possible landing spot for him next offseason. Knicks Speculation Heats Up Around Former No 1 Pick

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Knicks have had an interesting offseason thus far. While they haven't shaken up the roster much, they have made a couple of key additions. Both Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele were signed in NBA free agency. They will both be asked to handle key roles off of the bench. In addition to the two impactful outside roster moves, the Knicks made a change on the sideline. Tom Thibodeau was fired after New York was defeated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. To replace him, the team brought in Mike Brown. Brown will bring a different philosophy to the team. Read more: Where Could LeBron James Go Next? Top Landing Spots If He Leaves Lakers With that in mind, New York should remain active in looking for more depth. One name to keep an eye on could be former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons. He is still available on the free agency market and the Knicks have been connected as a possible suitor. CBS Sports analyst Sam Quinn took a look at the top remaining free agents and their best fit. When it came to Simmons, he stated his belief that New York was the top potential landing spot. "How about the Knicks? The key to maximizing Simmons will be surrounding him with shooting. The Knicks have a shooting big man in Karl-Anthony Towns. The reserves they added this offseason, Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, can both shoot. Perhaps New York could lean on Simmons as a creator when Jalen Brunson goes to the bench," Quinn wrote. "He gives them yet another big wing to deploy defensively, and if they want to switch as much as they did in the later stages of the postseason, Simmons can do so. The pressure of Madison Square Garden is a potential issue, but we're talking about a 10-15-minute reserve here, not a star. It's a low-risk, high-reward gamble." Read more: Bulls Receive Disappointing Nikola Vucevic Update: Report Simmons has never been able to live up to the hype of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He has had some injury issues in recent years, but his confidence took a major hit with the Philadelphia 76ers as well. Last season, Simmons played in 51 games and made 24 starts between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged five points per game to go along with 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds. While Simmons may not be a star, he could end up being a great pickup for the Knicks' second unit should they choose to pursue him. Where Could LeBron James Go Next? Top Landing Spots If He Leaves Lakers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers appear headed for a split at some point in the future. Whether that split comes before or during the 2025-26 NBA season or next offseason in free agency, the end seems to be near. The most likely scenario is that James plays out the final year of his contract with the Lakers and either retires or players elsewhere next season. He would enter the 2026 NBA offseason as a free agent. However, there is a chance that Los Angeles could find a trade partner for James that makes sense for the team. Or, there is a small chance that the Lakers could buy James out, although that seems extremely unlikely. Photo byWith that being said, the other question becomes, where could James play next? What teams could make sense as both a trade destination or a free agency landing spot next offseason? Read more: Warriors' Steph Curry Gets Honest About Future Retirement Potential LeBron James Trade Destinations There are only a couple of places that could make sense as a trade destination for James. Even then, the teams may not have interest in parting ways with what it would take to acquire James. Dallas Mavericks One of those teams is the Mavericks. They have been linked to James on multiple occasions. Kyrie Irving is one of the faces of the franchise and he is close friends with James. The two have talked about reuniting at some point in time. Dallas has the contracts necessary to pull off a trade for James, but it wouldn't be easy. New York Knicks Another potential option would be the Knicks, who have plenty of big salaries that they could match for James. New York might have interest in bringing in a superstar like James, but the team isn't far off from being a championship contender. Read more: Los Angeles Lakers Exec Makes Strong Statement About LeBron James Following their run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks might prefer to keep their core intact. Trading for James would require a major breakup. 2026 Potential Free Agency Suitors This would be the most likely route for James' departure from Los Angeles. If he does hit the open free agency market next offseason and wants to keep playing, teams could show heavy interest in signing him. Cleveland Cavaliers One team to monitor would be the Cavaliers. They have been linked to having interest in a third stint with James, but they aren't among the teams who would have interest in trading for him. Depending on the price tag, James finishing out his career where it started would likely be an interesting option. Being able to play alongside of Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley could be a major draw for him as well. Read more: 76ers' Free Agent Quentin Grimes Linked to Western Conference Team Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry and James pairing up would be a dream come true for both players. The Warriors have reportedly considered pursuing a trade for James in the past. Both players are nearing the end of their respective careers. Pairing up and making a run at it together would be must-watch basketball. It's an option worth monitoring should he hit the free agency market. Teaming Up with Bryce James Finally, James has already been able to play on the same team as Bronny James with the Lakers. Bryce James will be draft eligible next offseason and he might have interest in playing with his younger son. Read more: Bulls Receive Disappointing Nikola Vucevic Update: Report Whoever drafts Bryce would have a chance to land James. Whether or not he will enter the 2026 NBA Draft remains to be seen, but that would be a situation to watch closely if he does.
